Yeah, they sure did, gscottar. At 5 games over with an 83-78 W/L record. They didn’t have to travel to SF on a Monday to play a make-up of an earlier season rainout as a result of a lst day of the season Houston loss to the Braves while the Cardinals were losing on the same Sunday to the Brewers. TLR saved Carpenter and instead used Reyes in the Sunday game, just in case they needed Carp in SF. As we know, it wasn’t needed and we only played 161 regular season games that year.
How’d you like to be the ’93 Giants and win 103 regular season games and not even qualify for the post-season?
That idiot Dusty Baker was the manager of those 1993 Giants and their 103 wins that failed to make the playoffs. Puts a smile on my face every time somebody mentions it!

I don’t see a reason to trade Goldy unless he’s asking for it. Flaherty and Monty, however, I would definitely trade. Others I’d consider moving:

1B, 3B and Catcher are locked in by contracts, in theory, and I believe the key to the 2024 roster is unlocked by who is at SS and CF.
I would add Burleson to the trade list and MAYBE even consider Gorman and Walker. Why you ask? Because it irritates me to no end to have guys on the roster who can’t play stellar defense. Of course you can make the argument that the offense provided by Gorman and Walker will more than make up for their defense but you can’t make that argument for Yepez and Burleson. I am a defense guy.
Well not every player is a stellar defender. If Gorman and Walker can play average defense I have no problem with them. They are both learning new positions.

SS-Masyn Winn. We don’t need a crazy good bat there, but we do need a good glove. I hesitate to say it but Dejong could be a solid backup if we decline the option and get him on the cheap.
CF-Jung-Hoo Lee. We do great on the Korean players, at least for one year. His numbers are slightly down this year but he’s said to be going through some swing changes to help adjust to MLB heat.
By 2025 I could see a lineup of:
C Herrera/Contreras
1B Walker
2B Gorman/Donovan
SS Winn
3B Arenado
LF Cho
CF Lee

Assuming they don’t give qualifying offers to Montgomery and Flaherty, they could be traded; Also Hicks and Dejong could be traded too.

What if we are out of the NL Central and Wild Card race by late July. And by then Goldschmidt isn’t doing all that great. Let’s say he’s hitting about .274 with 17 homeruns and 55 rbi’s. He turns 36 later this season. And we get an offer for him from another club that wants to make a run. An offer that is really good.
Here’s my question…….Isn’t Goldschmidt a 5/10 player? Can’t he veto any trade?
I am pretty sure Goldy has a no-trade clause in his contract so the Cardinals can’t trade him without his permission. I really don’t think they would try to trade him anyway unless they were just blown away by a huge offer.
Not a 5/10, and has a full NTC, which renders the 5/10 irrelevant.
Arenado would have to go first. If Goldy went first, Arenado could go all Rockies disgruntled again.
I’d like to get Ruiz from Oakland. I think we need a speedy leadoff type. Plus a young, projectable starting pitcher. I think Montgomery might command a qualifying offer, but Flaherty will not, so trading either, or both, might fetch some prospects.
What would it take to pick up a competitive balance round pick since we lost our 2nd round pick when we signed Contreras? Would that be worth pursing for say, Tyler O’Neil? Not sure I would want to give up that much, but wondering where to start.
One potential way to get extra picks would be to offer the qualifying offer to Montgomery and Flaherty and see if they decline or not. O’Neill still has another year of arbitration eligibility.
Monty would/should decline. Todays he’s in line for a 3 to 5 yr deal at Q-Offer scale w/a multi year discount factored in.
Flaherty should accept, unless he has his value set at an unrealistic height.
Flaherty at 20mil is a scary thought and the same type of mistake they made bringing Wainwright back.
Sentiment can cloud judgement, but that particular decision appears to be about paying Wainwright to show up for functions and wear the red jacket as a career Cardinal, post playing career.
Trade Flaherty if he has any value left, or let him walk. No Q-offer!
The Yogi-ism “it gets late early” is literally true for the Cardinals organization because the trade deadline. August 1st, is just over 5 weeks away. The trade deadline is the date that determines what of importance happens so where the team stands about 4 weeks from now is the determinant. That is not a lot of time. A big decision will have to be made after about another 25 or so games. That qualifies at getting late.
If we want eat most of his remaining salary. I think the Yankees could want DeJong. They seem desperate for help on the infield. Might even snag a low level prospect out of it.
