One of the writers over at MLB Trade Rumors proposed a bad contract swap with the Angels of DeJong for catcher Max Stassi. I don’t know about that but it got me to thinking about other bad contract swap opportunities. I know the Cards and Cubs don’t do trades anymore but what about sending DeJong to Chicago for Jason Heyward and $12M. That would even the money out. Heyward is still a very good defender and might be a good 4th OF or platoon player. He might be more valuable to us than DeJong.

Then we could trade Noot or Carlson to Toronto for Danny Jansen and a prospect. He would be a nice upgrade at catcher for two years until Herrera is ready.

gscottar, I am all in favor of getting Heyward back, as long as the money and expectations are clear. He’s still a solid player and I think his work-ethic and leadership would be incredibly valuable in the clubhouse. He’s a left-handed bat that still plays great defense in the outfield. He’s won a World Series and all reports are he is consistent professional. I think people undervalue guys like that on winning teams. I think that is a factor the Cardinals have been missing for many years. This is going to be especially problematic with Yadi retiring.

I also read that story on MLB Trade Rumors and the write mentioned the possibility of the Cardinals maybe looking into Amed Rosario, which really piqued my interested as a potential option at SS. He’s 27 and about to hit his final year of arbitration. Cleveland being what they are financially, might look to flip him this winter if he’s not in their long-term plans. He could be an interesting addition given his speed and energy.

Also, I just read Dusty Baker is expected back with Houston next year. The rumors are the Astros will have to choose between Dusty and GM James Click, as both have expiring contracts. Reports have Click not meshing well with Baker or owner Jim Crane. If Click does end up leaving the Astros and can’t find a GM job immediately, I hope the Cardinals make some attempt to bring him in as an advisor or assistant GM. The guy has a wealth of experience and knowledge on the game dating back to his time in Tampa Bay and I really think Mo needs to get some new perspectives on how the Cardinals are run. All organizations will fall behind if they insulate themselves too much from their industry. That has been my concern with Mo for many years and it has only grown with each internal promotion they have announced.

Moreno from Toronto is a prime pick. They are all set at catcher without Moreno and need another outfielder and a strike throwing pitcher. Cards have a history of dealing away hitters who go on to provide their new team or teams with a few years of power. One more won’t hurt. Yepez, for example. plus, if needed, a mid level relief pitcher with good control. We have a few.

If the Mets make another run at getting Stearns from Milwaukee then the Brewers may try to get Click.

If they brought in Moreno as a catcher he would block Herrera. Jansen wouldn’t since he only has two years of control left.

It is the sell high offseason for Yepez imo. I don’t see his beer league softball swing holding up long term. Cash in.

I would be willing to pay all of Heyward’s salary if the Cubs would also take Matz and Verhagen, in addition to DeJong.

Interesting idea. I would do it to get rid of Dejong

Mozeliak and Marmol both want DeJong in a Cardinal uniform. There’s a good chance the he’s the starting SS with Eddie back over on the right side of the IF for the ’23 opener.

Mo might want him on the team because he doesn’t want to have to eat his salary but I bet if he gets any halfway good offer over the winter he will ship him out. I have no reason to believe Marmol wants him on the roster. He is just going with what he is being given. It isn’t his call to make.

I would say there is less than a 5% chance DeJong is the starting SS for the 2023 opener. He would have to hit about .500 during spring training or we would have to be hit with several injuries.

They’ll lay out the same spiel of the last couple of ST’s that he worked with this guy or that guy and they think they found the fix and they’re encouraged by his progress and his D is great at SS and they think he’ll produce and that they think he’ll contribute and this and that and the other thing…And oh…Mozeliak won’t get any half way good offer over the winter for Dejong.

even approaching a halfway good offer would be fine with me for DeJong

best case is probably a dump salary like Fowler…maybe a bad contract swap…

i think he is sitting right on the bench as he did most of this year. Until he hits he is only good for giving a day off to Edman at SS.

Bad contract swap from Baseball Trade Values

Not a huge fan of Baseball Trade Values some really stupid combinations work due purely to contract $$$. Even if neither team is up against the luxury tax.

That said, they have some that are interesting. Dump cash for another bad contract (gaining 9 mil) and a top 100 prospect?

Matz: 35 million over next 3 years
DeJong: 9.1 mil plus 2 mil buyout, 11.1 mil total.

    46.1 mil total

    Madison Baumgartener 23 mil & 14 mil
Blake Walston 21 year old LHP top 100 prospect
    37 million total

Card4ever, I would do that yesterday. I doubt the Dbacks would though.

C4ever and Gscott, I’ll sweeten the pot on that……

Matz, DeJong, Hudson and Woodford (I like him but the Cards don’t seem to) for MadBum, Walston and another prospect? Possibly helps them right away.

Anyone think the Cardinals might try to trade Mikolas this winter?

He will be 34 next season and in the final year of his contract that pays him $17 million. He’s coming off a really nice season, but was injured and terrible in 2021, didn’t pitch in 2020 and was not all that great in 2019. Finding a decent trade partner for him would make a lot of season to free up some money and open a rotation spot.

That’s something I considered. He’d seem to have some value to a team who wanted a reliable guy for the mid-back rotation. Maybe LA Angels? Dejong and Mikolas go in the Trout deal? 😉

Heyward is getting released I believe so you would be able to get him for free.

I haven’t really considered it. My assumption is that the Cardinals will see if 2023 looks similar to 2022 and if it does they will extend him for 2-3 more years.

Sure but that wouldn’t help in shipping out DeJong. The goal was to find a bad contract swap. I don’t think anyone is clamoring for Heyward but if meant moving DeJong and balancing out the money then it would be considered.

Gscott- do the math. Heyword for free and releasing and eating Dejong’s contract costs the team 9 million. Trading Dejong for Hayward with the Cubs kicking in tô balance the contracts would cost the team 9 million. It is a wash.

The mere thought of having Heyward take up a spot on the Cardinal roster makes me laugh to keep from crying.

True. It is probably a moot point anyway. The Cards and Cubs don’t do trades anymore. Nothing significant since Durham and Reitz for Sutter in 1980.

I have no interest in picking up Hayward. He is washed up, and we have other options.
