After going through everything entailed in this ranking process, I may have become more intrigued about the potential upside of Hence than any other player in the Cardinals 2020 draft class. It is difficult to label as a sleeper anyone who received more than a million dollars to sign, but that is how I feel about Hence right now.

I agree with this quote from Brian. The process has brought me to be a little bit intrigued with Hence and his potential. Hopefully we see him play next year and get his career going strong.

Everytime I read one of these prospect ranking reports I keep thinking to myself how incredibly important it is for these guys to get a full milb season in this year, or at least as full as possible. It will be devastating if they don’t.

Agreed, gscottar. College draftees from this year would be age 23 or 24 before they got to play at class A with no MiLB in 2021. Add a year for the 2019 class. Even high schoolers from that year would be as old as college juniors with no full season experience. To say that would stunt their development is putting it mildly. I think the Cards could have cost themselves a future big leaguer with their dumb decision to skip instructional camp this year. With the loss of minor leagues next year, it could cost them multiple players who otherwise could have made it to the majors.

IMHO Walker and Hence are real gems.

Sorry, I meant to say Walker, Winn, and Hence are real gems.

I have always liked Rondon since I saw him pitch in Peoria. In fact, he is my #5 prospect. I know the signs by the Cardinals is that they like Oviedo better, but I think Rondon has better overall offerings and better control. In retrospect, I would like to have seen him get the starts over Oviedo, as long as he was healthy. The fact that Rondon has had little bumps in the road in the minors is telling. This is not a kock on Oviedo, but my opinion of Rondon. It will be a pleasant experience watching them both improve.

Oviedo and Rondon form that nice middle tier of potential rotation pieces along with Thompson who could be the #3 starter types. Guys like Liberatore and Reyes offer more potential. We need to hit on at least half of these guys to feel comfortable about the rotation going forward. I suspect we will.

Where do you slot Hudson? #3?

Hudson is already a solid mid rotation type, but he was trending up. His walks were dropping and Ks rising slightly last year. If he comes back from injury and continues that trend, he could be even better.

I’m with Brian regarding Oviedo. I’ve been a fan since before JO was shaving… now he’s a big presence on the mound @ 6’6″. If he can get a hold of his command and with the array of pitches he possesses, I could see Oviedo being a front end starter, at least before the premier prospects above of him arrive.(actually Oviedo will give them a run for their money) Brian also points out that he has avoided injury and likely a will be a dependable workhorse. I would think he’d be a #5/#6 elite level prospect here but at #9 Johan has no place to go but up.

Oviedo is right at the doorstop and may have passed Ponce by on the depth chart IMO. As Brian said being stretched out at Memphis will be an advantage.

    This about right, 25?

    Flaherty – a #1
    Liberatore – a #2
    Hudson – a #3+
    Oviedo – a #3
    Thompson – a #3
    Rondon – a #4
    Gomber – a #4+
    Ponce – a #5
    Woodford – a #5
    Locey – a #5

I have been on the Oviedo fan club for awhile too. I have consistently rated him higher than Rondon. I think Oviedo is a potential stud and potential #2 starter if he can harness his control.

    This about right, 25?

    Flaherty – a #1
    Liberatore – a #2

    Gomber – a #4+
    Ponce – a #5
    Woodford – a #5
    Locey – a #5

Generally, for me, that’s close. Liberatore might be a #1 if the velocity he supposedly may have added is really there. I’d add Reyes as potentially anything from #1-5 in there although he’s only got 3 years to prove it or be gone. But based on playing time he’s still close to a prospect. I’d probably put Gomber as a #5 and Ponce in the pen, with Woodford not being in the big leagues. Locey may move to the pen as well but he’s got some time to make that move.

Woodford got hammered with home runs, but his WHIP was okay at the major league level in 2020 at 1.19. IMO, if he can learn from that experience, and cut the home run ratio down to his AAA level, he may have a spot someday on the big club 25 man.

Makes sense that to reach his full potential as either a SS or P, he will need to pick one or the other fairly early in his career.

Eventually someone will come along who can do both very well. The deck is stacked against any individual being that person, though. Hopefully Winn can excel at one or the other. It’s good to have a potential star SS in the system again.

I’m excited about him on both fronts. I guess I may be influenced by the deep pitching queue in the system vs. the thin SS queue. Develop him for what he eventually will do slightly better with high ceilings in both areas, or for the projected needs of the parent club?

I am 99.9% sure if I would ask Gary LaRocque about it, he would say that the player will eventually answer the question himself (via his results on the field).

I do not believe with even 0.1% confidence that the organization would steer a top prospect away from his strength as he develops because of a greater need at another position in the majors.

And if he is progressing at both at a comparable rate, then he will remain at both.

I’ll have to go with Matt’s comments on this. If he tries to stay doing both, he won’t max out on either.

We actually are days away from profiling these two yet, but this thread seems the best place for this.

That’s great news. Especially with Gorman. The sooner he gets here the better. Maybe a September call up in 2021?
