I’ve really liked Montero and what he brings to the table. I do think he will be a good hitter, but of course it remains to be seen whether he’ll hit well enough to make it to the big leagues. Coming off two lost seasons, he will need to show that he’s made some progress based on the Springfield camp and his own work, or he will definitely get passed by Gorman and maybe others. I could see him as a 3B/LF/RF/DH type in 2022 and 2023 and maybe settling into the corner OF/DH as he ages and slows a bit. Hopefully the power will emerge as it had in Peoria and he could be a solid average guy with 20-25 HRs and a number of doubles.
Of all people it seems that Montero could really benefit from the NL having the DH. Hopefully it happens even if we have to wait until 2022.

It may be close between Montero and Luken Baker as to who’s more psyched that the DH will likely be here going forward. Both those guys will likely be pinched out by better players at their natural positions but should have the power to be a DH.
We have talked a lot about finding a RH 3B to split time with Carp in 2021. Could Montero be that guy the second half of the season?
I would love for Montero to go all He Who Shall Not Be Named and jump from a dominant season at low A to our best hitter. Montero gets a two-year time warp, but worm holes will make this possible all the time in the near future.
I’ve got Montero penciled in for LF and Torres penciled in for RF. Carlson in CF.
Carlson will be a RF, where he will be a slightly above average defender. He’s not a CF long term.
Also, you spelled O’Neill in LF wrong. 😉

What year is that? Torres hasn’t even mastered Low Class A yet. I projected his most optimistic progression would lead to a late 2023 arrival. An awful lot can change in three years.
It would be great if Montero could master the OF but right now I have him penciled in as a DH.

Thompson is just the second pitching prospect to receive a 50 future value rating from Matt (Oviedo at #9 was the first in the countdown). Liberatore will be the last pitcher to get that high of a value at or above 50. These three will be the core of the the rotation in the near future unless Mozeliak decides to trade them off. That would be a poor decision IMO. But…. you all know the track record of the present FO. Has anyone heard anything about Girsch lately? Is he still around?

Please don’t take this the wrong way, (as being braggadocious), but I played 4 years of D1 baseball, done some coaching, been following MLB for well over 60 years, and I can say it’s a very, very small chance that Carlson will bomb out. All the basics are there. He’s a real talent. And when he was called up to the Cardinals, he had played only played 18 games at AAA. So it would be foolish to judge him on his first 35 games as a major league. The main difference between he, Bader, and O’Neill? Plate discipline and pitch recognition.Well, Forsch, if Carlson bombs out they will need 3 outfielders after Fowler is done. That could be a real problem. Mo will have to make some trades.

I tend to agree. A 2023 rotation of Flaherty, Hudson, Libby, Thompson and Oviedo wouldn’t be a huge surprise. Obviously Mikolas will be in the last year of his deal then, with Reyes, Gomber, Rondon and perhaps a young gun like Ludwin Jimenez, Tink Hence or Angel Cuenca other options to be in the rotation. There is a lot of hope there if the Cards can maximize it.

Surprising, and fascinating, that both Brian and Matt will have Knizner ranked ahead of both Thompson and Herrera. Thompson was very effective during his appearances at 2020 spring training, and as I recall, there were comments coming from Cardinals staff that Thompson had made a big jump and was very impressive. Herrera has been getting high marks from all over the organization.
