Bccran, I appreciate the consideration, but I can make this work. Gotta keep the vote moving along.

By a close vote of 4-3 over Johan Oviedo, Andrew Knizner has been voted our TCN #7 prospect.

The voting is now open for prospect #8.

#8 Johan Oviedo. Don’t want to rehash too much, but I think he’s on track to clean up his control issues and is continuing to develop his SL and CU command. Combine that with a plus FB that may have a little development left and he has a ceiling of a #2-3 starter and I believe the floor of a 4 or 5. That’s REALLY good for the #8 prospect in your system I would say. For me he’s right there with Zack Thompson as second best pitcher in the system. It’s a pretty big difference between those three (Libertore, Thompson and Oviedo) and Rondone who’s still a lot of projection. The pitching on the farm has improved recently, with a lot of exciting options at all the levels.

Oviedo at #8 for me. He’s gonna be a good one for us.

Another big jump up for Oviedo. He has constantly been impressive and deserves the 8 spot. I expect him to close in on the top-3 very soon.

5 votes so far for Oviedo. This may turn out to be a consensus. We’ll keep the voting open, though, until 6pm Central today if that’s okay with everyone.

Okay, it’s 7 votes for Johan Oviedo and 1 vote for Trejyn Fletcher.

Congratulations to the strapping 6’5″. 245 lbs. 22 year old hurler from Cuba. He never had an appearance at AAA. Jumped right from 23 starts for Springfield in 2019 to 5 starts for the Cardinals in 2020. Oviedo is our prospect #8.

The voting is now open for prospect #9.

The breakdown of the first 8 selections is

    3 Pitchers
    2 Catchers
    3 Third Basemen

There are a few high ceiling guys I’d consider for the #9 spot, but I’ve got to go with the safer floor guy and say Angel Rondon. He pitched really well last year and probably would have been a solid contributor at Memphis this year if not for the pandemic. I think he’s a #3/4 type, or a high impact reliever. We may see him in St Louis in 2021.

Masyn Winn @ 9. Apparently, they’re going to bring him up as a shortstop, but I saw a video of him pitching, and his pitches had that wiffle ball kind of movement as they sailed through the strike zone.

#9 Masyn Winn. I’ve got him one spot above Angel Rondon, but they aren’t separated by much. Winn has a tremendous amount of upside, but just as much risk. Love the fastball. Love the power at the plate. Great instincts and hands at short, and by all accounts can stay there long term. I just think “the secret weapon” is really going to help him find his way to greatness. So far away though.

Sometimes the difficult part with prospect rankings is how much weight you give to lower level guys with a potentially high ceiling vs higher level guys with a lower ceiling but who have proven more.

In this case I will go with the higher level player and choose Jake Woodford for #9.

Woodford is really intriguing, gscottar. There have been generally lukewarm comments him on TCN. But he has done better than those comments reflect. True, in 2019 at Memphis he had a mediocre 4.15 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 26 starts. But he showed endurance pitching over 150 innings in 5 months. That was second in innings pitched in the entire 16 team PCL. In addition, he came in third in ERA and and third in WHIP in the league. What happened in 2019 with starting pitchers in the PCL? Is Woodford another one that falls under Rodney Dangerfield’s well known comment – “I don’t get no respect”.

Woodford is lukewarm because he’s never excelled at any level but the very friendliest of confines of the FSL. He got a peek in St Louis this year and was not good at all. 7 HRs allowed in 21 IP. He has no standout pitches. IMO he’s a #5 starter on a tanking team, an up and down starter for a team like the Cards, or a mop up middle reliever.

Doesn’t mean I won’t root for him to have success, but the deck is stacked against him.

Flood21’s Tre Fletcher is a most intriguing possibility here in Round 9. So much so that after further review, I have elevated his status on my prospect board from #16 to #10. Thanks for the inspiration, Curt! Here at #9, young Masyn Winn just screams “Win with Winn” smack dab right in your face. Chalk her up for me, Cranny…….WWW….Win With Winn.
