    From the transaction pages:
04/13/25 – Memphis Redbirds placed LHP Quinn Mathews on the 7-day injured list.

I expected this given his poor command at the beginning of the year. He also just didn’t look comfortable on the mound. Hopefully it is something minor that some rest can address.

Also saw these on the Transaction page:
04/15/25 – RHP Hunter Kublick assigned to FCL Cardinals from Palm Beach Cardinals.
04/15/25 – Palm Beach Cardinals placed RHP Ernie Day on the 7-day injured list.
04/15/25 – Palm Beach Cardinals placed RHP Aaron Holiday on the 7-day injured list.
04/15/25 – RHP Brian Holiday assigned to FCL Cardinals from Palm Beach Cardinals.
04/15/25 – Peoria Chiefs sent RHP Joseph King on a rehab assignment to Palm Beach Cardinals.

And apparently we signed this pitcher:
04/15/25 – St. Louis Cardinals signed free agent RHP Ricardo Velez to a minor league contract.
04/15/25 – RHP Ricardo Velez assigned to Peoria Chiefs.

    (EDIT) A more complete list:

A lot of transactions today to start the minors week. Many injuries unfortunately too. Velez is actually an interesting minors FA pickup. Good numbers for the Twins last year.

This intrigues me. I think Svanson has the potential to be a significant contributor at some point.

I like that move. Svanson has setup potential. He is already 26 and likely ready at least for some innings here and there

Not knowing the actual numbers, I have a very strong feeling that the Cards are last or very near last of all 30 teams in the number of transactions made. The last few days is like a month’s worth of moves. Maybe two months.

I love the addition of Svanson. He can turn out to be a top-tier reliever.

Brian – Should the 40 man be 39 + 2 with Hence and Thompson on the 60-day? Or does it not work like that with Hence because he has no MLB service time?

Hence is not on the major league 60 day IL, but instead the minors 60 say IL. Important distinction because if he were on the MLB one he would be accruing service time. There is a limit to the domestic minors players an org can have (165) and placing a minors player on the 60 day IL removes them from that count and allows the org to sign other players. The Cards have been making some minors FA signings recently to shore up depth in the minors.

Right. But since he’s on the 40-man roster, does moving him to the 60-day IL give us another roster spot? It does in some cases. But maybe not with Hence since he has never reached the big leagues. But if McGreevey suddenly got hurt tomorrow and was put on the 60-day IL, I’m certain we would get to replace him on the 40-man roster.

No I should have clarified further. The minors 60 day IL does not allow you to remove the player from the 40 man roster. So Hence is in an interesting case where he is on the 40 man still, but not counting against the minors domestic player limit and isn’t on the big league IL.

Good discussion and clarification! Great question from Jnevel!

What would you all do with the 40-man roster to make room for Barrero?

I see Helman, Munoz, and Roycroft as options. I would most likely pick Helman as I think being injured himself right now he provides the least current value and I am unsure if he gets claimed even.

I would say Helman or Siani could get DFA’d, unless there is an injury we are not aware of that could put someone on the 60-day IL. The last I heard Roycroft had corrected his delivery problem and was pitching well, so doubt it would be him.

Helman or Loutos or Fermin. At some point they can’t keep hoarding pitchers on the 40-man and Loutos probably isn’t the guy. That said, one of Helman or Fermin is completely redundant. I think it’s probably Helman that is dumped.

I don’t know about the 40 man spot but I will say that I hate to see Saggese go down. He is probably our second best hitter behind Donovan. I understand wanting to him play everyday but I wish they could find him AB’s in STL.
