That isn’t quite correct. It all depends on how he leaves the Cardinals employ. He can’t be traded because the deadline has passed. If he is claimed off waivers, then yes, the other team has to pick up his current contract and its remaining salary. This is likely what the Cardinals hope.
However, if he is released, then later SIGNS with another team (the case you mention) at any time between now and the end of the season, the new team only pays a prorated part of the MLB minimum salary with the Cardinals paying the rest.
P.S. The key factor for him getting to his new home by September 1 is playoff eligibility.

Anybody buying this? My interpretation of the last comment is that the Cardinals do not see themselves as a playoff contender. Had I been there, that is the next question I would have asked for clarification…

Armstrong’s contract is $2.05 million.
They aren’t saving anything worthwhile (in their best case scenario) and likely not saving anything at all.
Now, maybe while Armstrong was here, the Cardinals inquired what it would take to sign him in the offseason, and perhaps that influenced their decision one way or another.
Glad to see Mathews get a promotion.
To be specific, the full savings would be about $380,000. I can see no other logical reason for letting Armstrong go now.
In my mind Matthews has moved ahead of Hence as a prospect. Im disintrested in the ML team at this point. When I find out his schedule I head to Memphis and watch him pitch.

1-0 record with a 2.84 ERA, 12-to-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .234 batting average against and a 1.03 WHIP in 12 2/3 innings pitched for St. Louis throughout August.

Good production. Maybe they re-visit his free agency. Looks like they wanted his roster spot. It was him or Kitt, now that Crawford is gone. Not an uncommon transaction with non-contending teams. They want to see next years guys play.
At least they are facing reality. This is a non contending team and everyone who’s watched them at all this year knows it.
Also, happy for Mathews. Let’s see if he continues to dominate in the big boy leagues the way he has in A and AA ball.
Really glad to see Matthews get a promotion. I’ve been right on track of predictimg when he gets promoted by a start or 2 each time.
We are 7 games out of a spot (6 yesterday) with multiple teams to pass and we still have exceeded our expected win loss from run diff. I hope our leadership sees the writing on the wall we aren’t contenders. Others don’t see the reason for dropping Armstrong, but I can’t see a good argument for keeping him unless you think we are contenders.
Yes Brian the Cardinals are unofficialy waving the white flag without saying so. You are right in that their savings on Armstrong will be a bit over $300k if he latches on with a new team soon. The whole thing is a bit ridiculous but if they are truly turning the page to 2025 then they might as well bring Gorman Walker back up and let them play everyday. It is my opinion that this organization is in trouble if those type players aren’t productive. You can’t be a build from within team if your first rounders are busts and your big dollar guys are underproductive, which is exactly what is happening here. Winn, Donovan, and Burly are our saving graces this year.
If the late season rebuild for next year consists of dumping a decent reliever after 11 games in favor of a guy acquired for cash considerations, and bringing two shaky veteran starting pitchers off the IL, then the emperor has no clothes.

Pham has made it known that he wants top be released so that he can hook up with a real contender….. now that the Cards are out of it. Its funny that he was with a top contender LAD and they got rid of him and shipped him here, Good job Mo. Even funnier is if no one picks him up. He has worn out his welcome so stick a stamp om him and wish him luck. Tell ’em Tommy boy was here….. twice.

I criticized Tommy Pham when we first got him from the White Sox. I said that the Cardinals patiently put up with all his injuries and disappointments. Then, when he finally got to where he could play in the majors and did well, the Cardinals tried to extend him for a year beyond his contract. He would have none of it because he wanted to become a free agent as soon as possible so he could hog as much money as possible. So they traded him to the Rays where he played for a year, then became a free agent and wound up in San Diego. There’s a reason why this self-centered jerk never stays with the same organization very long. BTW, Pham has managed to bank $35M during is stay in MLB.
