I proposed optioning Gorman months ago. Whenever a new POBO takes over we should pitch in to get him a subscription to TCN so he can learn a thing or two.

Gorman should have been sent down months ago! By promoting both Walker and Gorman too early we have shown the other 29 teams and us that they can’t hit and now they have very little trade value! We can’t win for losing!

A little roster jostling before the end of the season. Post doesn’t say whether he came off the injured list or not. From Peoria transaction page:
08/23/24 – RHP Austin Love assigned to FCL Cardinals from Peoria Chiefs.

It doesn’t matter since the FCL season is over. He is almost certainly done for the year.

I’ll start by debunking this Nolan Gorman was brought up too early drivel with numbers.

He had appeared 208 games between 2022-23.

777 PA, 41 HR, 111 RBI, .771 ops and and OPS+ of 111. He was sent down once in 2022.

So the issue likely you have is with 2024 correct? You know year 3 of his ML career to which he has flat out sucked outside of a month. I don’t see when that is on the ownership. The player at a point has to show an ability to perform at a respectable level. He has not show the ability to be respectable. He has shown he had nothing else to prove at AAA. However he should’ve been optioned before his hot streak earlier in the season and they let him ride it out to being respectable before have a debilitating crash like a hour after you drink a red Bull. He left them no choice to send him back to a place he had nothing to prove. It’s 100% on HIM to take in any sound advice and try and get back to the show. Which unless he just tears the cover off it might not happen.

Walker I think is part player, part pressure from MLB and our ownership. He likely didn’t help him himself by showing solid returns up on his recall from AAA last year. I think there’s a lot of pressure we don’t know about being who he is and who the powers that be want being faces for a community it has struggled to reel in for decades. He should’ve been left down in AAA after his demotion. I will throw that on the shoulders of ownership but again he has to prove he’s worthy of a recall. He really didn’t have much time in AAA until this year. Maybe if they didn’t promote him in 23 and he stays down half the year it helps him more.in 2024. Can’t take anything back with that.

Both these guys are prime trade candidates in the off-season and I think you underestimate the desperations of some teams that will look at a Gorman and Walker and think they can fix or tweak a couple things to get them back to respectability. You think the White Sox don’t need that? They need about everything under the sun to touch 60 wins next year.

858, my point was, and still is, by bringing Walker and Gorman up before they were really ready we have greatly decreased there trade value! When Gorman first came up he was on a hot streak at Memphis, but the word was he hits it hard IF he doesn’t K! Walker was simply brought up before he should have been!

The problem with both is, they can’t hit! Gorman is never gonna break any records other than K’s! Yes if you have a great lineup you might be able to hit him 8th and say we will take the 200 k’s to get the 30 homers! Our lineup is weak already, we can’t use that!

Walker is more salvageable, IMO! If someone demands he brings his left foot over and he learns not to open his hips up on every pitch I think he might still hit at the major league level!

The point is we could have packaged them both for a Logan Gilbert or Garrett Crochet and gotten a solid number 1! Now that ain’t happening! Will someone still trade for them? Sure, but the return will be far less because we have exposed there weaknesses to the masses!

I dont know if Gorman is salvageable. I really think Walker is IF he gets the right help.

Why do we think Winn has been good but Walker and especially Gorman have struggled so much?

They all came up through essentially the same organization with the same coaches didn’t they?

ZTR, I wonder if the answer is coachability! Winn really struggled last year and seemed open to changes he needed to make! I think any hitting coach worth his salt can see the issues with Walker! I am sure they have been discussed! Perhaps Walker is unwilling to make changes? Every time he goes down and comes back up I see no difference! What is the point!

The other simple answer is hand/eye coordination! The great hitters have it, others don’t! This is where I think Gorman is lacking! Winn has it, so he hits well when he shortens up with 2 strikes! I’m sure there are other reasons too! I to believe Walker is fixable, but he has to be willing to make the needed adjustments and someone has to demand them!

That return on the Dylan Carlson trade is not looking so good right now.

DFA Armstrong makes zero sense. Someone please educate me on why this happened

The Carlson trade was bad from the beginning.

The Cardinals would have been better off trading for “cash considerations.”

This was something that was in the works. I’m sure they wanted to waive him but they couldn’t wait a couple days as they need an arm after using 4 RP on B2B days. They DFA Armstrong and we have a chance to recoup some of those cash consideration you think Tampa was willing to fork over. Plus it appears someone likes O’Brien’s arm in the organization.

This is the first of a couple move I think the Cardinals make in the next 48 hours or so.

So, booyah, you’re saying it was a cash saver move? If that’s the case….My response here would get me banned.

I see no clear reason for cutting Armstrong. After a decent stretch from him? Fine…bring up Riley….but cut hait on some expensive flotsam.

    Carlson given away for free.

Armstrong does nothing other than take a roster spot and will be FA. This team isn’t making the playoffs so performance is irrelevant. It is a better use of the roster spot on a young guy to try to see what they have for next year. It does save money, but I have no problem with it since it gives the org a chance to see what O’Brian has in a month long trial.

DFA’ing Armstrong does not save any money. It actually costs the Cardinals money. Because not only do they still have to pay him through the end of the year, they now have to pay his replacement an MLB minimum salary instead of a AAA salary.

Like I said, they would have been better trading for “cash considerations”, even if those considerations were only $1.

To me, the money is irrelevant on Armstrong. Given this teams current situation and needs to improve next year, Armstrong had no value to the Cards. He couldn’t be optioned to bring in a fresh arm, he will not be back with the Cards, and he is taking innings that players whom will remain in the org next year could be pitching

Now should we have gotten Armstrong in the first place? No, but I knew Carlson would be traded as the org wanted to move on from him. Regardless of what happened in the past though, you have to evaluate where you are now and make good moves for your org.

So is the 40-man Roster now at 38, after the release of Brandon Crawford on 08/20 and the DFA of Shawn Armstrong on 08/27? The Matrix still says 39 but I don’t see anybody added. (Of course 3 are still on the 60-day IL.)

DFA’ing Armstrong does not save any money. It actually costs the Cardinals money. Because not only do they still have to pay him through the end of the year,

If another team signs Armstrong between now and September 1, which is possible, the Cardinals will not be paying him the rest of the year.
