Yes, it was a bad week to be named Luis Rodriguez, but at least one of the two Gustavo Rodriguezes remains! I have listed both Luises as released. Thank you for the nudge.

I didn’t know where to ask this, but it has to do with rosters, so here it is:
When a player who is on the 40-man roster is on the minor league IL, do they have to be added to the major league roster before they can be added to the 60-day IL, and then not count against the 40-man roster limit? I am thinking about pitchers Robberse and Kloffenstein as potential players that could be added to the 60-day IL to free us roster space for those coming back from injuries that require a space on the 40-man roster.

My understanding is that the players would first have to be promoted to MLB before going on the MLB 60-day IL. That would give them MLB salary and service time while on the IL, which teams never want to do because of the increased expense.

Brian, in your opinion, how will those spots (O’Brien and Matz) be opened up?
Possible DFA candidates in my mind: Roycroft, Robertson, Loutos, Fermin…

Robertson has been pretty bad. Loutos and Roycroft have been pretty good with Memphis and relief depth is important. If Fermin is dropped, it would signal that they think Saggese is good enough at short to backfill if needed. Of course, Fermin could clear waivers, but even if not, he seems replaceable.

So, Robertson and Fermin would be my choices, assuming Lynn and Siani don’t have long setbacks and no one else is hurt in the interim.

I was pleased to see Saggese got some kind of Player of the Month honor.

Shady, check the articles on the home page of this site. Saggese is the organization’s Player of the Month.

Brian, thanks, I was looking for that. It’s nice to see the young Saggese is making progress.

If it were up to me, Fermin probably would go first. Then it’s a toss up between Loutos, Robertson, and Thompson. Yes, Zack Thompson. I think he may be nearing his end. It would have been better to have traded someone else from the 40-man, but this is where we’re at. Actually, the best decision would be to convert Carpenter to a coach and call up Baker in his bench spot. But that isn’t likely to happen.

Is this Thompsons last optionable season?

Riley O’Brien was activated off the 60-day IL and optioned to Memphis. To make 40-man roster space, Nick Robertson was designated for assignment. No surprise there.

I wonder what makes Mo think O’Brien is better than Robertson. At least Boston could get something for Robertson. The Mariners I think it was couldn’t get anything for O’Brien IIRC. A basket of bp balls.

Checking their results in Memphis should answer the question.

Well they did select him for the opening day roster. So they thought he was better out of ST.

I meant better now. I guess we will find out.

I’m not surprised it was Robertson given how he’s struggled since he returned from injury. I’m guessing the Cardinals are hoping he doesn’t get taken though as there is some future potential with him. O’Brien is definitely the better pitcher right now though so I’m glad he’s back. I’d like them to give him another week or two in Memphis before calling him back up though. With the addition of Armstrong who can’t be optioned (yes, another reason I hate that trade), it’s O’Brien, Leahy, Roycroft, and Loutos competing for 1 spot.

It probably isn’t going to matter who wins that competition. The far end of the pen isn’t going to save the season or anything. I wish them all well. It just seems unlikely that Seattle gave him away and he might be pretty good. Like us giving away Adolis Garcia I guess.

    With Memphis:
O’Brien since coming off the IL on July 20 has thrown in nine games with a 2.25 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and .207 BAA.

Robertson in his last 11 appearances since July 1: 10 ER in 12 IP for a 7.50 ERA. Before that, his June ERA was 16.20 and in May it was 6.48 (with StL). That is a long stretch of bad road.

The answer seems very clear who is better now. Or are you looking at something other than results?

I think you underestimate how we need a back end righty to step up. Fernandez has been terrible.

Adolis has been beaten like a dead horse. His free swinging Javy Baez ways are catching up to him. He’s been awful this year. He’d fit right in with this offense.

Oh wow I am actually a little surprised despite him playing much better lately. I thought they would keep him in AAA all season. I don’t mind at all though as I think having a month of MLB knowledge on Walker helps us set roster expectations for next year. Best case he also becomes the middle of the order threat we desperately need.

Now I wonder what shuffling will take place in the minors to cover the OF hole that Walker left in Memphis?
