Yesterday was truly a transaction matrix. I agree with Bling. Nice job Brian on keeping up. That was a crazy number of moves.

Palm Beach seems to have a catcher glut of guys considered prospects with Hernandez, Kross, and Campos. I see they played Kross at 1B last night which maybe their plan is to cycle those 3 between C, 1B, and DH.

Chase Adkison too. There are also two catchers named Hernandez there, Sammy and Maikel, but Maikel is injured.

Another flurry of pitching moves today. Lynn, Loutos, Roycroft, Mills, Cornwell, etc

As expected. Bosiokovic draws the DFA. Who gets the next one? By bringing McGreevey up another one is coming. I don’t love any of the options left, but I’m going to guess Fermin.

I may be off by one. The roster matrix looks clean if McGreevey takes Bosiokovic’s spot. Maybe that is right and I was just thinking ahead about O’Brien returning.

Another option might be putting Robberse on the 60-day.

Rodriguez, catcher at the dsl cards should probably be in PB as well. Only 17 but putting up video game numbers in the dsl

The Cardinals are saying that they brought McGreevy up because they figured Lynn was going on the IL. That is strange because the word was out yesterday morning that McGreevy was coming up so the Cardinals must have known that Lynn was damaged goods before he took the mound last night. That seems rather reckless.

Damaged how? Is he struggling with the heat?

He is looking great, but in-season promos from the DSL to US are very rare. Then, the problem once here is that there are already four catchers with Palm Beach, including Chase Adkison, prospect Sammy Hernandez plus the fourth and sixth-rounders from this month’s draft.

So how would you play five catchers?

    P.S. Nine more transactions today…

The loss of all the short season innings for pitchers and position players has to be affecting the development of guys who get fewer game reps or none. A lot of players pile up at the bottom and can’t get on the field every day.

    Brian,
I noticed on the Matrix that Packy Naughton is shown as being on the IL, but the Memphis transaction page shows: 06/10/24 – Memphis Redbirds activated LHP Packy Naughton from the 7-day injured list.
I haven’t noticed his name on any game logs, so wondered if he is indeed still injured? Any insight?

    cardsfan64,

Packy was placed on the iL again on July 9th. He appeared in 7 games between his IL stints.

I chart the entire Cards organization on their pitcher usage on this spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sTk0MNuPOaWWJHwpZ5tniQAIXQ4ZzdeRZ-tu6SST2Ko/edit?usp=sharing

cf64, my only guess on the Naughton thing is that MiLB.com just missed recording his second IL move.

I had thought Gio would bring something from some team taking a flyer.

The fact he wasn’t appealing in trade and went unclaimed indicate his perceived ability and committed salary are out of sync. We’d probably agree with that.

He’ll probably have to sign a minor league deal and earn his way back up down the stretch. Or maybe he will take the rest of the summer off and go after an NRI deal for next spring.

Though it didn’t end well, we can finally close the books on the Luke Voit trade, a win for the Cardinals.

Should DSL OF Miguel Vargas (20yo from Caracas) still be on the Matrix? I’m not seeing him and my numbers don’t add up.

Vargas is a 1B on the FCL roster. He was accidentally deleted on the posted Matrix last week when I removed 2B Samil De La Rosa. If I am not watching carefully, when I do a delete, sometimes two columns are affected instead of one. Anyway, it has been corrected now. Thanks for pointing it out.

Brian, Please shed some light on some roster moves I think I misread. I noticed that Luis Rodriguez was released from the Springfield Cardinals on July 27, but also saw what I thought was a duplicate transaction on the 26th. Turns out, both of our “Luis Rodriguez’s” have been released. (unless you know otherwise)
I just found it odd that guys with the same name would be released one day apart. By the way, thanks for using middle initials when we do have same name players. That really helps! (except in this case when MiLB doesn’t use them!)
