When Giovanny Gallegos was DFA’ed — a move the #STLCards decided Sat night — it was done in hopes of saving salary they can put toward a player nabbed via a trade, per a source.
Gallegos was making $5.5 M in 2024. If he is claimed, STL plans to put that money toward a trade add.

I see the salary relief as a secondary benefit. Leahy deserves the roster spot more than Gallegos at this point.

Well, we need a RH bat, work a deal with Mexicans, they get Gallegos back and we get Luke Voit back.
Really feels like the Gallegos situation screams this is a poverty ownership. If you need to save a few million in order to add other pieces what are you even doing owning a team?
The only way Gallegos saves the Cardinals money is if he is actually traded. If he clears waivers, the Cardinals are on the hook for everything but the major league minimum. I doubt anyone will trade for Gallegos.
I agree LA. It would make no sense for a team to trade for him when they can get him for basically nothing in a few days. The Cardinals aren’t saving anything except a few nickles and dimes. This was about freeing up a 40 man spot.

Thank you, Bling. Never in all my years of doing this has there been 26 transactions in one day! In the past, the Cards often staggered the debuts of the draft picks over multiple days. It was a bit odd they decided to do it in one fell swoop on the trade deadline day, but so be it.
