Minor transaction note to start the day!

That’s good to hear. I do like Pages as the backup for Contreras though. Too bad we can’t have all three.

Zack Thompson to Memphis 7-day IL. With Robberse also out, it would be a golden opportunity for Hence and Roby to move up, but both are hurting…

Ingram was coming off 2 decent games (5 IP with 0 runs) and was rested. Would have seemed more logical to just call him up for a few games

That was a quick turn on and off the IL for Granillo (out since June 24). It’s disappointing to see Honeyman back on there again. He’s spent most of his professional career on the IL. I hope it’s minor.

That will be Ingram’s 5th or 6th to claim him this season. It is interesting teams think he has enough talent to claim, but not enough to ever give him a shot.

MLB’s transactions page shows that Fermin was optioned to Memphis effective today. Noot’s activation should follow later in the day.

That’s a real shame about Hjerpe. He was pulled early in his last start so this is suspected. But he was on quite a roll lately.

I’ll miss Tovalin. I always had a fondness for him. He reminded me of Yepez. His overall results were poor though this season, even though he was performing better lately. The team needs to make room for the incoming draftees so I expect a few more cuts to be made.

What a bummer that our top 3 pitching prospects going into the year have all hit the AA DL.

Several transactions today per MiLB transaction page:

07/11/24 – FCL Cardinals placed RHP Miguel Martinez on the full-season injured list.
07/11/24 – Palm Beach Cardinals placed C Maikel Hernandez on the 7-day injured list.
07/11/24 – C Alejandro Loaiza assigned to Palm Beach Cardinals from FCL Cardinals.
07/11/24 – St. Louis Cardinals optioned RHP Gordon Graceffo to Memphis Redbirds.

Graceffo was only up as the 27th man for the double header.

That is a result of the top prospects list failing to factor in relevant and important considerations. I made the points then, but briefly, Roby had extensive injury history. Hjerpe had a serious and concerning injury. Hence had been in the system 3 years and never went more than 5 innings. The arguments for basing it on theoretical ceiling were made at the time, so we don’t have to argue about it again. But IMO, the resulting list is just make believe, and does not present a realistic list of who is most likely to have an impact in MLB.

Curious what you think the injury was?

I get your assertion about risk, but I have a feeling that the Bling Top 50 Prospect List would only have two or three players on it, ranked no. 48-50. 😉

Brian I believe the Hjerpe injury was discussed at length on a elbow surgery thread on the members board back last winter, I believe.

I know what it was. I asked Hjerpe about it directly. By your response today, I question if you remember what it was, because I did not consider it either serious or concerning. But I await clarification of your view.

Debris in the pitching elbow joint was surgically removed. He missed 3+ months of the 2023 season. My research at the time revealed that there is no structure within the elbow joint which spontaneously sheds bits and pieces. Loose bodies within the joint are the result of either damage or deterioration due to wear. I considered that both serious and concerning. He returned and pitched 2 innings in Septenber. That was the situation when the prospect list was created.

Perhaps there are some career-threatening examples of pitchers with two loose pieces of cartilage having been removed from their elbow, but I don’t know of any. Of all the problems a pitcher could have, whether rotator cuff, labrum, thoracic outlet, even Tommy John, this seemed far less significant.

To be fair, we don’t know what his 2024 issue is and if it is related.

As far as I know, the arthroscopic procedure is not career threatening. But anything that results in 3 months recovery time is itself concerning, apart from any concern for the future health of the elbow.

Maybe the current lay up is not arm related. Hopefully, some intel will pop up on this side of the pay wall. ;-/

Pages stays on the 26 man roster. I like it.
