The Cardinals are also in a situation where every win is precious and we seem to play a ton of close games. How many low leverage situations will there be? The first time GG and his 12.00 ERA gives up a three spot in a close game the fan base will be livid, and justifiably so.

jj-cf-stlParticipantAfter those two losses to MIA, our B-team pen is in need of any and all the help they can get. Maybe GG will remember to cover first? 😀
June 24, 2024 at 3:36 pm #257616I think the line between A-team and B-team is getting blurry. King and Fernandez are gaining ground on Kitty and Jo Jo in my book, although some situations are obviously more high leverage than others.
June 24, 2024 at 3:37 pm #257617RHP Andre Granillo (AAA) has been placed on the 7-day IL.
LHP Quinn Mathews has been transferred from Peoria (A+) to Springfield (AA).
RHP Darlin Saladin has been transferred from Palm Beach (A) to Peoria.
OF Romtres Cabrera (FCL) has been activated from the 7-day IL.

Spot on.I’ve been expecting GG to have a bad first half, and it finally got here. He wears the rest well when healthy, but that may be in the past now. TBD.

If there is a runner on second or third and you need a strikeout, I prefer Jo Jo.
Otherwise, yes, they are converging.
June 24, 2024 at 4:33 pm #257621Nice to see Mathews get promoted to AA & Saladin promoted to Peoria.
June 24, 2024 at 5:10 pm #257627Was Raposo even on the ml roster for one game? For 24 hours? A nice bump in minor league salary (40 man roster players get paid more) for basically doing nothing
June 24, 2024 at 5:12 pm #257628Yep very good to see Matthews and Saladin promoted. Let’s see how Matthews does against some more advanced hitters.

Nunez
Hjerpe
Baker

We will first have to see if Hence is healthy actually. If he is, then it will either be Nunez or Baker’s spot I assume Mathews takes. I think I prefer Nunez to keep getting more starts just because his stuff is better and more innings means more time to develop, but both Baker and Nunez probably belong in the pen at some point.
EDIT: I overlooked Cornwell and it could be him that goes to the bullpen as well. Either way, I think Baker and Nunez need to be transitioned to the pen at some point.
June 26, 2024 at 11:58 am #257867#STLCards OF Lars Nootbaar (oblique strain) came through his BP session fine on Wednesday and manager Oli Marmol said "a weekend rehab assignment would be ideal." No decision yet on where that rehab assignment will be. Memphis (AAA) is in Gwinnett, while Springfield (AA) is home.

June 26, 2024 at 11:58 am #257868Good grief..
#STLCards infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman sprained an ankle while fielding ground balls on Tuesday, per manager Oli Marmol. His wrist rehab will be put on hold while the severity of the ankle injury is determined.

cardsfan64ParticipantBig news! Either Matz will be put on the 60-IL or Raposo will be DFA’d.
The #STLCards plan to call up RHP Gordon Graceffo ahead of Friday's game against the Reds, sources tell The Athletic. Initial plan is to use him in relief to help alleviate a taxed bullpen. Graceffo, a fifth-round pick in 2021, will need to be added to the 40-man roster.

June 27, 2024 at 11:25 pm #258066Oh wow. Congrats to Graceffo. With Pallante going tomorrow it is probably wise to have a pitcher capable of going multiple innings.
June 28, 2024 at 7:03 am #258067They need to figure a way to get a look at Koperniak in MLB before the deadline in case Mo gets a chance to move one of the outfielders or LHBers for a starter. He is vastly out hitting Walker there in AAA. It will be harder with Noot coming back. I admit I don’t know anything about him besides his batting line and lack of pedigree hype.
I understand the reason for signing Carp, but it is too bad Baker hasn’t gotten an extended trial with regular reps, either to gage him as a post Goldy 1B or to improve his trade value. But I think at this point we should just assume nothing will be done to try to get some value out of him.
Dunn has been mentioned here on the forum also, and there doesn’t seem to be any interest in doing anything but let him sit there.
The upper levels are not talent rich, but maximizing what value there is doesn’t seem to even be on the radar.
June 28, 2024 at 7:16 am #258071I mentioned the other day before the double header that I thought they might call up Graceffo. Then he didn’t start at AAA and they went with a bullpen game at Memphis so it seemed likely he was coming up. Then he didn’t. I guess they were setting him aside in case we needed innings. And now that we do, he’s on his way up. Congratulations Gordon.

stlcard25ParticipantGood for Graceffo. He had the look of a mid rotation guy a couple of years ago, but even if he’s just a decent #5 type he will help. The stuff looks sort of like a RHP version of Liberatore.
June 28, 2024 at 8:36 am #258076I feel I am being repetitive, but here goes again.
Baker is blocked now, but next year, the 1B situation could be very different. Or it could be sooner if Goldy is injured. Baker has more value to the Cards than he would in trade because he is unproven at the MLB level. And he has another year of minor league options in 2025 so there is every motivation to keep him around.
Dunn is behind Fermin, Prieto and Saggese in the second base pecking order. He is 27 years old, doesn’t play SS and hits lefty, but the team needs RHB if anything. Without a rash of injuries to Gorman, Donovan, etc, it seems a major stretch that Dunn would get enough at bats to contribute. Great Triple-A guy, though.
Koperniak also hits lefty. He does everything well, though nothing exceptionally. With Donovan and Burleson hitting well and Siani’s exceptional defense, the outfield is less of a liability than earlier in the season. If Nootbaar returns soon, there is no pressing need. If Carlson is traded later, Koperniak could be tried as the #4 OF.
Bottom line, it is hard for me to see how fringe guys are going to make a difference for St. Louis this season.
June 28, 2024 at 8:40 am #258077Hence to Memphis?
June 28, 2024 at 8:44 am #258078Seems to me that Hence should be healthy before being promoted. He has only pitched three innings the entire month of June and walked off with the trainer early in both starts. Hence is not on the IL, nor is he scheduled to start this weekend. In other words, he’s in limbo. But even if he is ready to go soon, now that he has missed this much time, unless he has been throwing regularly on the side, he is going to have to rebuild his pitch counts more like it was the start of spring training again.
