There are a lot of moving parts. I hadn’t realized its been since the 12th that Robberse pitched. Looking over his game log, it seems like he might have been having some sort of problem after his very good start this year.

I feel strongly that the Cardinals should DFA Gallegos. I hate that. He was really good for a long time. But it seems he has little left. That bullpen spot could go to developing someone like a Roycroft or a Memphis starter.

I agree with this. Here are Gallegos’ stats on the year:

STL- 9.0 IP, 12.00 ERA, .233 WHIP, .341 Avg Agst.
MEM- 4.0 IP, 11.25 ERA, .175 WHIP, .313 Avg Agst.
SPR- 2.1 IP, 11.57 ERA, 2.57 WHIP, .364 Avg. Agst.

Sure those are small sample sizes but they are also all scary numbers.

    The contract plays.

I read in Goold’s chat to not be concerned about minor league rehab results because guys are working on stuff. The implication is that they can turn it back on like a light switch.

Gallegos hasn’t pitched in game action for a week and when he did most recently, he allowed three runs. But MLB players are not required to rehab in the minors unless they agree.

I generally don’t get worried the first couple times out on a rehab stint. But when a guy continues to give up runs every time out and he was giving up runs every time out before he went on the IL, then I think he’s just bad or broken at that point. That’s where Gallegos is. I can see some rationale in trying him out in a few garbage situations and hoping he gets somewhat right. An average Gallegos would be better than the next man up. That means he becomes a blocker for development though, which I don’t like. I’d rather drop him and use that spot for someone else to grow.

It boils down to Gallegos for Roycroft/Loutos. Contract guy for Indy pick ups. Does anyone need things explained? All Gallegos has to do is be less dreadful than he was. Ollie and Blake can try to minimize the damage.

Some sunk costs are different. There’s only one particular reason to hang onto Gallegos if he’s bad. I’ll get to that in a second. They eat his contract if he stays or goes. And this is likely his final season with us (there is a team option) so his runway to get better is short. The team can’t trade him because he has no value. They could hope someone else picks him up and pays him the league minimum the rest of the way, which saves $500k – kind of. Since they’d pay league minimum for another player, that other player would cost them an additional $100-$500k (depending on if someone pays Gallegos the league minimum). Keeping Gallegos saves a little money. But it uses a roster spot and limits opportunities for development.

I don’t have a lot of faith in a guy who had an ERA over 11 in AAA and AA. Granted it was only 6.1 innings, but he had a 12 ERA in MLB before the FO “conjured up” an injury. Give me the Indy guys over Gio at this point. Heck, give me Kloffenstein as well.

The Mad Hungarian made the same claim about Mark Mulder back in the 2000s with all his injuries. We know how that turned out.

It sounds like Matz is getting shut down raw a while again and likely won’t be back until August. Also, Riley O’Brien is going to have the same surgery Donovan had so he may be done for the season. It’s possible he’d be back late in the season.

Robertson is back and throwing in Memphis. Edman is rehabbing, but not in live game action yet. No word on Noot. Contreras will be back in a few days. Also, FWIW, Packy Naughton is back from his injury and has fully rehabbed. He’s not on the 40-man roster anymore but could be added if needed.

From today until the deadline, development at mlb should be a back burner concern. Getting the contracts back in play would be beneficial, so they can be evaluated by others as possible targets.

So, as it stands right now, our bullpen is: Helsley
    Kittredge
    Romero
    Liberatore
    King
    Fernandez

For that 7th spot, we have: Leahy – (His pitches looked good. He was so nervous after getting the last out
in today’s game that Pedro Pages almost had to carry him off the field.)
Roycroft – (So far, so good. I hope he can keep up the good work.)
Loutos – (His ERA at the major league level is 0.00, but his WHIP is 2.25 in
1.1 IP. But at Memphis his ERA is 1.66 and his WHIP is 1.11 in 21.2 IP)
Robertson – (Not yet ready for prime time, IMO.)
    Granillo – (ERA 0.77 IP 11.1 WHIP 1.11 BB 9)
Kloffenstein – (Might as well give him a shot at relieving.)

    Thoughts/comments:
The best thing that can happen, IMO, is for Gallegos to find his mojo.
This is a really big opportunity for Leahy. His competition for that 7th spot is unproven.
We are really going to need some good work from Liberatore.
Fernandez needs to keep up the good work.
Loutos’ stats at Memphis are impressive. He needs to shoe horn those stats into MLB.

I agree with all mud says, a good run down.

An advantage of the pen not being loaded down with contracts and hype cadets is assignments can be based upon results. The flip side is a lot of unproven guys and low ceilings. It’s pick up trucks not Ferraris.

Aren’t there eight pitchers in the pen? So these are the nos. 7 and 8 options?

That’s ok Bling. Ferraris are expensive, break down easily, and are mostly for show. Sure, they look great, but when you find out how unreliable they are and how expensive they are to maintain, you might want to think twice. Pick-ups are the steady reliable work horses. We’ll take it.

Besides all the options Mud listed, there’s also Robberse (when healthy), Graceffo, Naughton, and Bosiokovic.

If it were up to me, I’d DFA Gallegos and recall Roycroft. Then, depending on our position at the deadline, I’d consider selling Helsley if someone way over-valued him, which tends to happen at the deadline.

Gallegos is where Carlson was a month ago, rock bottom trade value. For me, Carlson has improved his value as a trade chip, over the last month. Now we have a month before the deadline, to manage all assets correctly.

Are we thinking that Gallegos is playable, or did he just decline to continue rehabbing in the minors?

I believe (and accept that I could be wrong) that Gallegos isn’t playable anymore. He has no trade value today or in the future even if he does luck into a little better results. There just isn’t enough time. Sure, someone may pick him up at league minimum and try to do what we are doing with him and hope something gets a little better, but they aren’t going to give us anything for him in order to try that.

I wouldn’t endorse a DFA of Gallegos yet. It may becoming, but I give him another chance to be a trade package throw-in, until the deadline passes. Low leverage mop-up role, and if he fails at that, he’s determined his fate.

Agreed, jj. Put Gallegos in low leverage situations and see what happens. A DFA now would be a rash decision and it is not required.

Sometimes a Bader salary is necessary to trade for a Monty salary.

Sometimes you have to eat a portion of a PDJ salary during a trade, and that could apply in a Gallegos or Carlson trade too, but getting the $ close with throw-ins is a well established trend.

The new trading trend for atl is get the guy you want, and DFA the ones you took to make the trade work.

There are about five weeks until the trade deadline.

Gallegos would have to throw up an awful lot of 0’s between now and then to have any trade value whatsoever.

GG needs to show health thru playing time and effectiveness. Probably can’t right? I’m clearly in that camp, but roster management needs the next Roycroft to wait a month.

GG has been carrying this pen since Martinez was the closer. I’ve got another month for him.

What do you do with a guy who was getting lit by minor league hitters?

    #257587

GG is likely on the Kittredge path. They both debuted in 2017. GG is 2 yrs younger and thrown 100+ IP more (ballpark memory).

He could make two appearances and go IL again to end his season. Possible surgery, in which case StL would decline his 2025 option, clearing the roster spot.

No-one will know his mlb status better than us after a possible surgery. At the minimum we should have a minors deal waiting on him, and depending on his ETA, a Kittredge type contract.

    TBD.
