Johnson won’t be eligible again until his junior year. I’m pretty sure Kendle can just enter the draft again next year. He could even get drafted by the Cards again, but that seems extremely unlikely.

The projected 2024 salary for each of them will be different based on their service time and past performance as compared to peers. Any tendered a contract will have the right to arbitration if they can’t agree with the team on their salary amount.
Brian, I think John King needs to be added to your list as an option too.
I feel fairly certain Woodford will be cut. I also believe they should do 1 more, but I’m less certain who that may be. I’m stuck between Knizner and Hudson for entirely different reasons. I’ll settle on Woodford and Hudson.
It’s time to cut Woodford.
I think they have to keep Hudson because of acute lack of depth for starters. IMHO, Thompson should be next up in the rotation, and Liberatore should concentrate on late inning relief.
I saw where Connor Thomas didn’t get claimed do he will be in Memphis. There will be competition for rotation slots there this spring.

When fringe guys start to get expensive, they get replaced. We will have to see if the replacements are actually upgrades.
I like all these moves. Frees up money, space, and we don’t have to waste playing time on them anymore. Hudson was an ok insurance policy, but it wasn’t high end and we can use the cash. Now there’s lots of room to upgrade.
I guess you could say that Hudson and Woodford wore out their welcome.
They probably shopped Knizner and interest wasn’t strong, and they didn’t know where they were going to put him since Herrera has effectively forced his way onto the team roster.
Yepez wasn’t going to make the team roster, so they gave him a chance find another ballclub to play for rather than send him back to Memphis.
It’s kind of sad to see these guys go after pulling for them since they came to St. Louis. The good news is that each of them is at a new beginning.
A little surprising to see the list of names being let go…but I think it almost had to happen if the org is going to switch up their MLB model. The low K grounder pitchers and backup catchers without much upside had to be weighed against the $$ they likely saved. I’d expect that O’Neill may be traded before too long too.
It is enlightening to now know that in each case the trade value was zero. It helps to recalibrate our thinking and bring it closer to reality.
I’m guessing Knizner finds his way on to a ML roster. Good luck to them all.
Knizner was a surprise. I thought the Cardinals could at least trade him for a relief pitcher. He was better than the catchers for the Marlins (who non-tendered Jacob Stallings) and the Yankees.
I am pretty sure they tried to trade Knizner, but a backup catcher who is getting more expensive is not going to be a hot commodity. My view is that the Cards found a way to save $1.2 million without appreciably hurting the roster. I suspect money is behind several of the non-tenders, which I don’t consider a bad thing – if it is redeployed on better starting pitching.
Remember that because he is now a free agent, if/when Knizner signs an MLB contract, the financial terms are not bound to arbitration rules this year. You can bet he won’t get $2 million elsewhere, which is the best estimate of what the Cardinals would have been bound by rule to pay him.
To reinforce bling’s point, it isn’t that the players non-tendered have no value. It is that their escalating salaries made them a bad investment for their prior team. For example, Hudson can help an MLB team, but not at $4 million per year. This is a market correction as a player’s salary gets back into line with his value returned.
The offense was ok but really inconsistent in 2023, the defense was atrocious by Cardinal standards, the pitching was the worst we’ve had in a long, long time.
There is PLENTY to work on this off-season. Maybe more than can actually be accomplished if getting back to 90 wins is the bar.
