Some other minor league transactions that were post-dated that appeared today:
10/23/23 – Springfield Cardinals released LHP Sean Kealey.
10/24/23 – Springfield Cardinals activated RHP Edgar Gonzalez from the 60-day injured list.
10/25/23 – Springfield Cardinals released RHP Edgar Gonzalez.Not sure why they didn’t show a transaction activating Kealey before releasing him like they did with Gonzalez, unless I just missed it!
I assume Irving Lopez will elect minor league free agency in a few weeks. I’m not sure if Querecuto has that option or not. I like that we hung onto Leahy and he just heads back to the minors. He’s got some upside if he can figure out consistency. He probably won’t. But at least now we keep him and he doesn’t use up a spot. Suarez and Lawrence were easy cuts. Expect more cuts to the 40 man after the World Series like Barnes for almost certain. I expect Woodford and Wilking Rodriguez to be gone too and I’m interested to see what they do with Knizner. Plus there are several others that are truly at the margins that we could try to upgrade, but they may keep until they find someone better over the offseason.
Kealey and Gonzalez both spent the year on the injured list and Kealey was old and Gonzalez was mostly injured every year. So another easy decision.
There has to be more roster moves coming. Verhagen is a free agent, and Barnes possibly? Looks like 4 or 5 others may be gone also.
I hope W-Rod brings enough to Spring Training to make the team…. Are his 100 mph fastball and 12-6 curveball real, or just rumor? Besides…Who doesn’t like rags to riches stories?

-JoeJoe, if you subtract the players listed that are on the 40-man roster (3) you really have 21, unless the Cardinals add others in the next day or two. Brian leaves them on Memphis until he posts the new Matrix for the off-season, which will be coming out real soon.
So right now the 40 man stands at 35 with 5 set to come off the 60IL. Whether all 5 get a spot remains to be seen. Willking and Zuniga might be bubbles.

-JoeIf you are referring to Gonzalez and Kealey, yes, they have been released. I will pick them up in the Matrix today.
Still don’t understand why Naile, Fermin, Siani, and Naughton are still on the 40 man roster. They don’t provide value.
And we have too many similar DH/1B candidates, ie Yepez, Young, Baker. Granted, trades may change this, but I can’t see them having much trade value. And Young has only shown power the last 2 years.
In addition, Kloffenstein and Robberse will need spots.
I just wish the roster decisions were more difficult. Clearly, there are 5 or 6 players that could be cut without missing them.
