RHP Casey Lawrence has been selected from Memphis (AAA).

August 15, 2023 at 4:28 pm #231618Yet another curious roster move. Career 6.80 mlb era. Looks like a classic AAAA player. I guess Graceffo or Mcgreevy don’t seem ready. I would rather our prospects get a cup of coffee.

ParticipantI don’t get bringing in (and up)
these mediocre, older journeymen.August 15, 2023 at 4:38 pm #231620I agree bccran, it is so stupid
August 15, 2023 at 4:43 pm #231621I can’t believe we have Mottar, Verhagen, Suarez, Naile, Lawrence, and even Naughton on our roster. What a joke.
August 15, 2023 at 4:46 pm #23162227 – this is a business decision not a talent decision. Some part of it has got to be that they don’t want to see their prospects get beat up by talented major league players. They don’t want to wreck their confidence until they are more prepared. But the more important reason is twofold. One, bringing them up may start their major league service time early which reduces their value. Two, they would need to take up a 40-man roster spot and those are a premium at season’s end. A guy like Lawrence can and will be easily let go. And yes, we have a bunch of others in that same category now as well (Fermin, Naile, Suarez, etc.). But we need spots for Rule 5 guys and for free agents that we sign. And right now, by my math, we won’t be able to protect every single player I’d like to protect so there’s already some risk. Adding a guy like Graceffo or McGreevey gives us one less player we can protect or one less free agent we can sign. Masyn Winn is in the same boat.
August 15, 2023 at 4:48 pm #231623Lawrence is stretched out to do 4 or 5 innings, perfect for following Wainwright. But if that was the role, he wouldn’t have been added and brought up until Wainwright’s next start.
He did opt out of a minor league contract somewhere and then signed one here. Maybe there was some kind of agreement about getting a call up.
August 15, 2023 at 4:49 pm #231624I would rather see prospects given a chance in low leverage situations than awful known commodities that have never been successful.
August 15, 2023 at 4:52 pm #231625We all would rather see the prospects try their luck. Probably the team too, but if it doesn’t make business sense, then they won’t do it. The Cardinals are a business.
August 15, 2023 at 11:10 pm #231666Hi Brian, Any news on OF Elijah Cabell? MILB originally said he was released from Peoria on 7/24. His MILB player page says released, but the transactions page is now just blank for 7/24. he hasn’t played a game with Peoria since 7/15.
August 16, 2023 at 4:52 am #231668Yes, that is confusing about Cabell. He has been released.
August 16, 2023 at 2:21 pm #231708Jnevel – Your comment that the Cardinals are a business is incorrect. Baseball (Cardinals included) is not, functionally, a business, rather it is America’s pastime. If you are inclined to disagree, please submit indisputable evidence.
August 19, 2023 at 1:04 pm #231921Naile down, Zuniga up.
August 19, 2023 at 1:30 pm #231923They should have some better use for a AAA roster slot than Naile by now. But then, we just didn’t have anyone better to plug a hole in the St. Louis roster. The Buck Owens song, ‘Gloom, Despair and Agony’ keeps playing in my mind whenever I am thinking Cardinals.

August 22, 2023 at 1:12 pm #232233Liberatore to IL, Jacob Barnes called up.
August 22, 2023 at 1:26 pm #232236I feel like if I look back to season stats in a few years I’m going to have a recurring theme of “I forgot that guy was even in the organization”. The frequency with which this happens seems directly connected to the frequency I am having grey hairs incorporate my head
August 22, 2023 at 1:35 pm #232238Ok, let’s see somebody spin this one.
August 27, 2023 at 10:55 pm #232650A name to watch in Triple A:
Logan Sawyer was promoted to Memphis after posting a 2.24 ERA since June 1 for Double-A Springfield. Sawyer was signed to a minor-league FA contract in spring after gaining exposure through @PitchingNinja #STLCards
— Katie Woo (@katiejwoo) August 28, 2023
August 28, 2023 at 2:29 pm #232685Made official now:
RHP Logan Sawyer has been transferred from Springfield (AA) to Memphis (AAA).
RHP Jack Ralston has been transferred from Peoria (A+) to Springfield (AA).
— Cardinals Player Development (@CardsPlayerDev) August 28, 2023
August 28, 2023 at 2:56 pm #232687If Sawyer ends up helping in STL that would be a find.
August 28, 2023 at 3:05 pm #232693VerHagen is back from the bereavement list with Naile returned to Memphis.
September 2, 2023 at 2:12 pm #232989The #stlcards📷 have claimed CF Michael Siani from the Reds via waivers. He's 24, has two option years left and is a strong defender. Siani became expendable when Harrison Bader & Hunter Renfroe were claimed off waivers. He heads to Memphis. Guillermo Zuniga moves to 60-day IL.
— Brian Walton (@B_Walton) September 2, 2023
September 2, 2023 at 3:25 pm #233002Assuming Victor Scott is manning CF in Memphis next year, it is hard to see both Palacios and Siani on their roster.
