Dunn is a bit similar to our old friend Chuckie Fick in the sense that if you inversely swap out the first letter or two from the first to last name you get a bit of grade school humor…

The first Cardinal draft pick to be assigned to a team (per MiLB transaction page):

07/18/23 – C Chase Adkison assigned to FCL Cardinals.

Why did we get a minor league catcher back for a ML reliever?

    Seems sus.

Yeah we seem to have plenty of good catchers in the system already.

Idiots running our asylum. Bringing Mottar back for a third time. Our management is heavily in question. I would have kept Walsh for the rest of the year.

Has there been any pitcher signed/ Rule 5 acquired for minor league depth that has had a good year this year? It is amazing how bad our talent assessment has been. It is largely why we have the record that we do, due to lack of depth.

Cards27, most often minor league free agents are depth players for all teams. It’s rare that these guys suddenly become good and impactful. You have to understand that most of these guys spent 7 years with another organization and never got added to a 40-man roster or they got added but then got released. Last year we “hit” on Moises Gomez, but he still hasn’t taken a single MLB at bat for mostly good reasons.

This year, the Cards have had a few of these guys who have modestly worked out (they have had good minor league seasons and may or may not have been used as emergency MLB depth): Taylor Matter, Arquemides Gamboa, Tres Barrera, Andrew Suarez, Fermin, and Querecuto. Some of the others really haven’t worked out much at all. But very rarely do these guys ever become good MLB players.

Also note that as a minor league free agent, guys can sign with any team they want. The Cards have a lot of young players on their MLB team that block players from advancing (i.e. they have very little “marginal talent). If you’re a good minor league free agent and you want an opportunity to play in the big show, then you choose to go play for the Royals.

Willis hasn’t pitched all season due to injury. Love threw for about a month before he got hurt and hasn’t been back since. I’m not sure what injuries they have. There’s very little info on minor league injuries. But maybe Brian knows.

Usually when minor leaguers are placed on the 60-day, their season is over. I will be in Jupiter next month and look in on Willis (and any other rehabbers as well as drafted pitchers). Willis’ continued injuries are concerning to me.
