Saw this on the transaction page:

04/25/23 St. Louis Cardinals sent 2B Taylor Motter outright to Memphis Redbirds.

So, no other team claimed him?

That is correct. Are you surprised that Motter wasn’t claimed? I am not.

And he had the choice to declare free agency but instead decided to remain in the organization and report to Memphis. Good call for him, as jobs are not easy to find this time of year.

I think it is the right move to send Jordan down. He needs to work on his defense by playing everyday.

I agree with sending Walker down, but couldn’t we have had Yepez back up instead of Motter??? If I see Motter pinch hit for Burleson I may flip out.

Junior was on the bench the last couple of games. If he is not going to play, he needs to be in Memphis playing every day.

I figured Yepez would be the call up though if they sent Walker out. Motter seems like a poor man’s DeJong, which is pretty darn poor.

I don’t understand why Walker is sent down and Burleson plays everyday! Walker is a better hitter right now than a Burleson and both stink in the field! The only reason I can think of is perhaps they want other teams to see Burleson for a trade but that is very risky IMO! He seems headed to under 200 and then no one will take him!

Burleson is not going to benefit from more time in AAA. Either he will adjust and do well or he won’t.

Burleson is like Matt Adams. He has nothing else to prove in AAA. He’ll either hit or he won’t.

Is someone going to the DL we don’t know about to sign Motter to an MLB deal?

Walker’s defense is bad. It would’ve been even worse in SF but idk man. Alexa Datt did an interview with him 2 days ago in the dugoutand it seemed like everything was fine. He said how he liked visiting all the big league cities and loves Sushi. Hope he likes the Sushi in Des Moines and Rochester. Lmao!

Some of the moves this franchise makes leave me SMH. They send the kid down and resign Motter and play a kid that’s had an extensive run and is hitting around .200. Come on at least do something product with the option move because this isn’t it in my book.

This is the moment of the season where the Cardinals have jumped the shark. If you’re going to send Walker down, why the hell would you resign Motter to a MLB contract, just two days after DFA’ing him and then outrighting him. Every other team passed on him when they could have claimed him off waivers, but no…Mo just had to resign him? If you want a Triple A guy in the majors, just bring up Robertson.

Okay, then you must be in the category that Walker shouldn’t even have been on the opening day. His defensive liabilities were known and should have been known by the FO before even promoting him. He’s only been an outfielder for 9 months.

Burleson is gonna be this years PDJ! Play him until everyone knows he can’t hit and then just keep playing him! I would take Walker over Burleson every day of the week and twice on Sunday! Burleson is just as likely to benefit from Memphis as Walker IMO!

The matrix currently shows Memphis IF José Fermin on the IL, but the transaction list doesn’t show him going back on the IL after coming off 04/11, and the Memphis website shows him as active. If he’s active that makes 29 on the roster, I think.

This time, it is MiLB.com that appears to be in error. The Memphis roster as provided to the media by the team still shows Fermin on the IL. That he has yet to play this season despite supposedly being active for almost three weeks is another red flag..

Interesting. I saw that you annotated the 04/11 transaction.

Can you elaborate on this year’s rule for maximum active rosters for MiLB teams? I remember that for at least one year you could be a little heavy at one level (e.g. AAA) as long as you were correspondingly light on another (e.g. AA). Is that how Memphis can have 28 right now?

    28 at Triple-A and Double-A and 30 at Class-A.

A Rants blog article predicts these moves:

    Waino up, woody down

Liberatore up, Romero down, Matz to pen

    Yepez up, Motter down

(I haven’t looked into whether a 40 man spot needs to be cleared for Waino. )

I think you crystal ball is accurate.

Romero has an ERA under two but at 11M per year for Matz you know how it’s going to go….

I don’t think two and a half of the three will happen right now.

They will not give up on Matz starting – yet.

I also don’t think they will give up on Motter after jumping through hoops to keep him just seven days ago. He cannot be optioned out and he declared free agency last time. If the Cards try this again, I can’t see him reporting to Memphis. Further, they said they want a less complicated outfield. Adding Yepez would put them right back where they were.

On the third idea, they could just as easily keep Woodford in long relief and send down Romero. He is the third lefty currently. Or they might send down Thompson, who has struggled recently.

My bottom line is that other than activating Wainwright, they are in a corner with no impactful moves to make. Roster shuffling won’t cut it. I think the guys they already have are simply going to have to play better.

P.S. I didn’t view the article because it requires multiple clicks just to read it.

I don’t see what Motter adds to the team other than maybe filling a roster spot allowing the club to keep a younger guy down at AAA for control reasons?
