Could very well be Misiewicz who is #40. I think this is an ok move. Take on an ok lefty relief pitcher at a prime age with options that they can try to make better and replace a right hander who is less needed due to our depth who is likely to clear waivers anyway and still be on the team. Seems like an easy decision. It probably doesn’t make much difference but hey, it feels like there’s only potential upside to a move like this. Even if it probably is only a slight gain. If we can secure a better option, then we can just waive Misiewicz and it will have been a very small price to pay.
The Cardinal’s website here gives a NRI list matching Brian’s except it is missing C Tres Barrera and RHP James Naile. Any ideas why?

Here are my suspicions. Barrera was signed after the initial camp invitees were announced and whoever maintains the rosters missed it. (But so was Andrew Suarez signed late and he is there.) Naile was outrighted after being invited to camp automatically as a 40-man player. But the Cards made it clear he was still invited, now as an NRI. Again, the roster maintainer must not have seen it.
Barrera is wearing no. 63 and Naile no. 68.
But those depth charts are fantastic! 😉

The new roster matrix indicates 24 NRIs but I believe there are 25. Is one mis-identified as an invitee?
This may be a dumb question, but what does the “assigned to St. Louis Cardinals” I have been seeing on the Cardinals transaction page mean? Aren’t they already a part of the Cardinal organization? This must have a purpose….
They are assigned to the St Louis club while on the 40-man roster. But then when the season starts, St Louis can only have 26 players on their “Active Roster” so the others have to be “Optioned” to the minor leagues (if those players still have options available).
I do understand the 40 man roster assignments, but these transactions are for minor leaguers. I think I counted 22 of them on the Cardinals transaction site. I was wondering why they had to be assigned to the Cardinals, and if ALL minor league players will eventually be on that list. Sorry if I didn’t word my original question properly.
I see what you’re talking about. Yeah, that does seem weird. And it’s all happening over the last few days. My only guess would be that a minor leaguer needs to be assigned to St Louis to play in one of their Spring Training games. But I have no idea what other significance that might be beyond that. It is kind of weird to even list them out.
Jnevel has it right. They are among the 36 minor leaguers who are now in STEP Camp. It is a paperwork thing to “add” them to St. Louis for the day only when they are called over to the big-league game. It is a perk for the minor leaguers to rub elbows with the big boys.

This is not news per se, as the players with 0-3 years of service time either have to accept what is offered (assuming the minimum salary is met) or not play.

Brian talked about that in the article. They have the total as 69 even though it was really 70. So, Yes the total is 128.
We have optioned RHP Jake Walsh & INF José Fermín to the Memphis (AAA) roster and re-assigned RHPs Gordon Graceffo, Michael McGreevy, Dalton Roach and catchers Nick Raposo & Wade Stauss to minor league camp.
The Major League camp roster now stands at 51 players.

McGreevy didn’t exactly dominate at AA last year, but as far as pitching his way up to AAA, the bar is kind of low. If you look at pitching stats from 2022 for the starters at both Springfield and Memphis, the ERAs were kind of fat. That applies to almost everybody except Woodford, including the likes of Graceffo and Liberatore. I say Graceffo only because 3.94 is less than fantastic. His WHIP was low and, unlike McGreevy, he kept his K rate up decently. We will have to see how he holds up in AAA. Other than him, nobody looks too promising as far as potential rotation help or even depth in 2024.
So you lump all pitchers together, even those at Double-A at the age of 21 in their first full pro season? You are one tough grader!
In terms of potential to possibly help in 2024, yes, all lumped together. If they are unlikely to be of help, the reason doesn’t matter.

Brian, I noticed that a few names on the FCL Roster Matrix were not included in the minor league spring training list. Were these oversights or coming later, or will/were these players be dropped from the team? Players that I noticed are:
Cervantes
W Ortega
R Cabrera
F Taveras
J RamosEvery year, there are a handful of guys from the FCL who aren’t yet considered to be competitive to make the big jump to a full season roster, so they aren’t invited. I wrote about that in this article.
