ParticipantAny thoughts on who will be on the roster in April as the 14th man?
With 28-man rosters, our April roster can have 14 hitters and 14 pitchers. I’m actually pretty certain they will actually go with 15 pitchers instead, but who would be the 14th man?
Right now, our position players are rather set with Contreras, Goldshmidt, Donovan, Arenado, Edman, O’Neill, Carlson, and Nootbaar as the likely starters. Then Gorman at DH makes it 9. DeJong, Knizner, Yepez, and Burleson are shoo-ins for the bench. That’s 13.
We only have a couple others even on the 40-man roster – Moises Gomez, Ivan Herrera, and Jose Fermin.
January 4, 2023 at 10:17 am #210470Why are rosters expanding to 28?

They started that last year for April and then it scales back to 26 in May
January 4, 2023 at 2:25 pm #210478Oh ok. I didn’t know that was an annual thing. I thought it was some kind of exception last year because of the CBA standoff.
January 4, 2023 at 3:14 pm #210479I thought it was only for 2022 because of the late start
January 4, 2023 at 3:23 pm #210480I thought the 28 was only last year also. The opening day roster was 13 position and 15 pitchers.
January 4, 2023 at 4:16 pm #210482Yes, the increase to 28 to open the season was a one-time agreement because of the shortened spring training due to the lockout. A part of it was no restriction on number of pitchers since them needing more time to ramp up was the primary concern.
January 4, 2023 at 4:43 pm #210483It looks to me as though active roster size is one of few aspects of the game that has remained relatively constant. Best I can tell, it’s been 25 or 26 players going back as far as to 1910. When you consider recent rule changes like the DH, instant replay challenges, make believe runners in extras, pitch clocks, three batter rules and changes to the rules involving plays at HP and 2B, roster size has remained close to being the same for quite a while.

cardsfan64ParticipantOne International draftee has been assigned! (per MiLB transaction page)
FCL Cardinals 02/03/23 RHP Ruben Menes assigned to FCL Cardinals.
February 4, 2023 at 11:00 am #212104It will be interesting to see how many of these guys skip the DSL. Menes is the oldest from the international class at age 20, so it makes sense that he is starting in the US.

cardsfan64ParticipantBrian, do you think I. Lopez and/or Dunn will start in AAA this year? Lots of other infield options in the mix already!
February 6, 2023 at 4:44 pm #212212Seems like both would deserve a look, but the three veterans brought in this winter seem to be blocking them. Lopez has already spent parts of the last three seasons with Memphis but is always sent back down. Dunn has yet to have a chance. Neither has been thought well enough of to get a big league camp invitation.
February 8, 2023 at 12:40 pm #212315We have acquired LHP Anthony Misiewicz from Kansas City in exchange for cash considerations.
To make room on the 40-player roster, RHP James Naile has been designated for assignment. pic.twitter.com/oTDskSQmYY

February 8, 2023 at 1:12 pm #212316Awesome birthday news for Naile. He is turning 30 today.
February 8, 2023 at 1:22 pm #212317Does Naile at least get a non-roster invitation as a consolation prize?
February 8, 2023 at 3:57 pm #212327February 8, 2023 at 4:45 pm #212328These pick ups we’re seeing we’ve seen before the last couple years. Once ST is underway and things get somewhat sorted, we will probably see a couple Indy ball guys sign on. I really don’t know how the organization got so thin in the upper levels, but they did. If anyone has a theory, lets hear it. There was the lost season, but that affected everyone. At least the system wide W-L record was not quite as pitiful last year.

ParticipantCurt Bishop of The Coldwire ran this by Card fans:
Misiewicz owns a career ERA of 4.43, so if that does in fact take them out of the running for Moore, Chafin, Britton, Brad Hand, and Will Smith, fans will certainly be frustrated.
True or false?
February 9, 2023 at 10:40 am #212349Personally, despite his ERA (and lower FIP of 3.72), it is hard for me to get excited about a guy who the Mariners sold six months ago and as of this week was 41st on the Royals’ 40-man roster. I don’t think the Royals are so loaded they would give away valuable arms, as they were 27th of 30 MLB teams in ERA last season. But maybe the Cards see something that the Mariners and Royals did not.
February 9, 2023 at 4:11 pm #212356If he was signed to be just a depth piece that is one thing, however, if his signing indicates the Cardinals have no interest pursuing one of the lefties mentioned above then I would characterize that as unfortunate.
February 9, 2023 at 4:30 pm #212360No one other than them knows what they are thinking, but I certainly get why you are concerned.
I will say that Misiewicz just happened to pop up as available since he went on waivers, so that almost certainly was more of a reaction than a calculated plan.
February 9, 2023 at 6:36 pm #212366So who is #40 on the roster now, in case we do sign a FA?
February 9, 2023 at 7:06 pm #212368Contreras is #40 unless he changes it…Haha!
February 9, 2023 at 9:28 pm #212380bb asked:

Until yesterday, it was James Naile…
