Like I said I love Goldschmidt in a Cards uniform…. but not for just 1 season and he won’t be back for ’20. That is a guarantee.
Why are you so pessimistic about us re-signing him? They’ve been willing to go the extra mile if need be. I don’t see an extension as being difficult at all.
I feel like Ozuna is the one that we woud be really hard-pressed to re-sign. We will have O’Neill ready to assume the OF hole whereas Carpenter would only be on a one year option for $18.5M ($2.0M Buyout) plus he could be the super-sub if we don’t pick up Gyorko’s $13.0M Option ($1.0M Buyout)
Either Nightengale was wrong about the extension topic or the Cards are being careful with words. I think it could be either.
Just because the Cardinals say they did not ask to talk to him about an extension does not mean he was not asked.
Let’s say the Cards made two offers. One offer is richer but it assumes an extension is in place. That extension could be negotiated by Arizona at any time – without the pressure and visibility of the 72-hour window. As part of that discussion, the trade would surely be mentioned, because other reports out of Arizona are that the Snakes at some point asked him about an extension with them. In this scenario, the Cards would not have had to make a request to talk to him – and in fact, never get directly involved. But by making two offers, the Cards put pressure on AZ to try to get the extension done – and if so, both teams would benefit.
The other offer is not including an extension, which is the one that was taken.
P.S. I wish I was there every day so I could ask follow on questions like these, not that I would get an answer. “Mo, do you know if Arizona talked to Goldschmidt about an extension connected to this trade?” “Did you make an offer contingent upon an extension being in place?” Because it would be a matter between the player and his then-team, Mo would almost certainly not comment even if he knew the answer.
Maybe it helps the Cards save face that they were not rejected, but honestly, what would it matter? Whether or not he was asked by anyone, there seemed almost a zero chance he would do it now, anyway.
Still fun to speculate about. At least for me. Moving on, though. There is no extension now, which is all that really matters.
Someone pointed out to me a few minutes ago that the Cardinals will be paying Goldy about the same salary in 2019 as they did Holland in 2018. 🙂

If I didn’t know Cardinals27 better, I would say he was dropping us all hints as to what he wants for Christmas. I hope his mail carrier is a burly one, so to haul all of his upcoming gifts his way. The question begs to be asked….. would Cardinals27 prefer the back of his new #44 Cards jersey to be inscribed with “Goldy”, “Goldschmidt”, “Cardinals27” or “Mo Rocks”????

All in all I think there is a very good chance for him to sign an extension. Maybe I’ll send him some fan mail, telling him I spent $50 on his uniform so he better stay.
No way Mo is looking at this as one & done for Goldilocked&loadedforbear. I would bet both the ranch and the wifey in it that our newest Redbird is here for the long haul. Paul knows all about our fair city and it’s fans and he seems like just the sort of good natured rational chap who would succumb to our irresistible charm.
Just checked…..they had a run on XXL’s, Cardinals27, but should have them restocked in time for his 2020 Redbird campaign.

Been pounding the Cardinal forums for three years to get Goldie – FINALLY !
Now Paul needs to stay healthy and perform-n-produce to his capabilities.
Hoping this isn’t Paul’s only year in the city of the arch, while a five-year contract agreement would seem fitting.
Next move should be a bonafided 3rd base, the Cubs have one too many, perhaps we could land David Bote or Kris Bryant – but fear slow-footed, below average arm-n-glove LHB Carpenter will be the default.
And of course, the pitching staff front-n-back end needs help.At least for the moment we get to enjoy a golden bird perched at 1st.

Reds 76For some reason the analytic folks don’t like the Brewers. Most of them were projecting the Brewers in the high 70’s to low 80’s last year. Wrong!
They’re low on the Brewers because they excelled at the most volatile parts of the game last year…the bullpen and getting elite performances from good to very good players. It’s hard to expect that to continue. Now, I wouldn’t think they’ll be 17 games worse, but would it be a shock with their SP to be 10 games worse if Cain and Yelich aren’t MVP caliber again and the pen doesn’t lock down every single game?
I would expect the Brewers to get someone like Jed Lowrie on a 2 year deal to be 2B, acquire at least one pitcher in the JA Happ/Dallas Keuchel realm (if not trade with Cleveland for Kluber or Bauer), and be willing to go after at least one reliever such as Familia or Robertson…
This is their window.
But those moves haven’t been made yet, so…
On a D’Backs forum the posters don’t like this trade at all for the most part. They are taking jabs at both Kendrick and Hazen. I can understand that. But, as we all know, sometimes the economics of baseball comes into play.

Almost all of the Brewers have been performing at career highs for the last two years. I have wondered if they have found a PED that the tests don’t reveal. How is that for a conspirisy theory. Virtualy every trade or free agent signing has turned out big time for them. One thing for sure is that they don’t suffer from lack of agression from their front office.
I am not a Harper fan. The Nats have underperformed every year that he has been there and his defensive profile is very poor. Some players perform as individuals and others win ball games and there is a difference.
I am a little out of touch but if Kimbrel has not resigned then I say go after him. I am also not against making Martinez our closer. He has just enough of that kooky attitude that closers often have.
I really like the Goldschmidt trade. We gave up a good defensive catcher who could be an average major league hitter, a pitcher who has initial success but the league seems to catch up with him, and Andy Young who showed in the AFL that he was potentially a solid major league bat. While we gave up a draft choice we could get a better one if we don’t resign Goldschmidt. Kelly, Weaver and Young are typical of what most gurus say about the system. Great depth but few if any high impact players. Plus where does Young play. He is not close to Wong defensively and can’t play shortstop. So there are others who would probably edge him out as a utility player.
While we may get hurt after 19 we have two potentially high impact players in their last year before free agency. I suspect we will get maximum effort from them in 19. Also instead of being out of cash if we signed Harper we still have that to go after other pieces. Being tapped out financially plus carrying the unproductive contracts of Cecil and Harper would be tough.
The key is will our front office step up and make the moves to fill up the other holes. We were one of the few contenders that failed to make a significant move to improve the team at the trading deadline. Instead we just opened up opportunity for guys like Bader, Ponce, Gomber, and Hudson plus getting more opportunity for Brebbia.
One of my targets would be to pick up a left handed hitting right fielder to platoon with O’Neil or to fill the hole if Tyler doesn’t come on. We could have as many as 5 people with 30 or more homers in 19.
All three of the prospects the D-Backs got from us are likely to have long major league careers. Kelly will be the D-Backs starting catcher until he hits free agency, and maybe beyond. Andy Young looked like he was blossoming this year, and could even have some star power. Weaver will make many millions of dollars during his career. There is the possibility that this turns out to be a bad trade for St. Louis. Regardless of that, its the right trade for now. I can’t wait to go to spring training and see Goldschmidt standing at first base wearing Cardinal red.
Hoorah for our side! Love the deal. Our new General Manager did a fine job orchestrating this trade. I think Weaver will be a fine pitcher for years to come. Carson Kelly can now focus on being the man behind the plate and should blossom. Andy Young is a personal favorite of mine in our farm system. He gets better at every step up through the system. He could be a poor man’s Jeff Kent. I wish them all the best in their new homes.
Can we keep Goldschmidt long term? We’ll see, but the focus is on a World Series title in 2019 and maybe that convinces Paul to stay.
I have seen several people list as a positive of the trade that we created a roster spot since we gave up 2 guys off the 40 man roster and only received one 40 man roster player back. The reality is that one of the roster spots we gained will have to be filled by a backup catcher so there really was no roster flexability gained.
But since Bob brought up the idea of a lefty-swinging backup on one of the threads, Chris Herrmann is a left-handed batter, who can also dabble in the outfield to get some playing time

I was one of the people who said that – and here is why.
A 40-man spot is needed only if they sign a catcher to a major league contract. The last three or four backups they have brought in were all on minor league contracts. They were not added to the 40-man until the end of spring training. By that time, injured players can be moved to the 60-day DL or underperformers and marginal players can be released or traded away to clear space. (For example, Lucas and Valera were both traded at the end of 2018 camp for non-roster minor leaguers and in 2019, several relievers on the roster now are likely to not survive until the regular season.)
So, yes, if they continue their prior pattern, it would give them one spot of additional flexibility this winter all the way through spring training.
