If I didn’t know Cardinals27 better, I would say he was dropping us all hints as to what he wants for Christmas. I hope his mail carrier is a burly one, so to haul all of his upcoming gifts his way. The question begs to be asked….. would Cardinals27 prefer the back of his new #44 Cards jersey to be inscribed with “Goldy”, “Goldschmidt”, “Cardinals27” or “Mo Rocks”????

    gscottar,
I thought the same thing about the Goldschmidt to Jack Clark comparison.

And about our bullpen that everybody seems to be worried about. I thought once we got rid of Holland, then only using Cecil in mopup, and once Gregerson was out of the picture we got better. Wasn’t that about the time we started going with some younger arms in the pen? We can only have five starters and if Martinez, Mikolas, Wacha, Flaherty, Reyes, and possibly Wainwright in the rotation that leaves Hudson, Gomber, Poncedeleon, and Gant to pitch out of the pen.

Wasn’t most of our bullpen woes in the first half of the season?

Relief was a mixed bag. Here are 2H relievers ERAs, but several cratered in September. (A few stray starts are mixed in.)

    Brebbia 1.50
    Webb 1.76
    Hudson 2.63
    Ross 2.73
    Shreve 3.07
    CMart 3.21
    Hicks 3.64
    Norris 4.66
    Leone 4.91
    Mayers 6.10
    Cecil 14.90

    Here are September-only relievers ERAs:

    Brebbia 0.84
    CMart 1.93
    Hudson 2.31
    Webb 3.52
    Ross 3.75
    Shreve 4.50
    Leone 6.75
    Hicks 6.97
    Cecil 7.71
    Mayers 9.00
    Weaver 11.57
    Norris 13.50

Ok I am all in with Goldy. Now trade for Bumgarner, sign Britton. Make CMart the closer. Now that’s a team for 2019!

When people list the relievers I am surprised how often Brebbia gets left off.

And its not just the fans. Brrebbia was in a battle w/Mayers for the last bullpen spot coming out of ST.

    Under appreciated.

jj-cf-stl, I agree with you on Brebbia. Because he was an easy move, having options, the Cards kept sending him down despite him being one of their most effective relievers.

FWIW, I named him our StL Reliever of the Year for 2018.

I really like Goldschmidt. There is 1% chance he is here for more than 1 year. There is less than 1% chance that the Cards make it to the WS as the team stands now.

So next season the power cupboard is barren again as Goldschmidt and Ozuna are gone.

So what is the point of this trade?

Now that I did that, I am going to bump up the relief thread.

14NyquisT, you clearly took your pessimism pill this morning. That must have been one heck of a trade hangover! 😉

By the way, if you’d like to back that talk up, I will gladly ante up $10 to your $1000 on each of those odds that you are going to be proven wrong. So what do you say, my $20 to your $2000? I can set up an escrow account to protect us both. 😉

We can bet again later about 2020, when we actually know which players will be on the team. Worrying about that now seems misplaced focus – unless one has already given up on 2019, that is.

Very disappointed to see Young go… a major overachiever. Maybe not a MLB all-star but then again who knows. He plays baseball correctly and is an excellent student of the game.

Kelly is probably ecstatic today. Good for him I hope he fulfills his potential. The question becomes what happens if Molina breaks down. We’ll have to trade for a solid replacement. As for now… any catcher with a heartbeat will suffice as a backup and that will allow Molina to keep himself happy. That was really what his contract was about all along. We can rate this trade in 2021 when Molina is the manager of the Cards and Kelly is an AS catcher with the D’Backs.

    Weaver was the throw-in.

Why should trading for Goldy put Harper interest aside? Its a hell of a lot smarter to go for a 26 kid on a long term instead of hoping to re-sign a 32 year player to a 4-5 year deal.It is nonsense to think the fixing of this team be finished by just adding a bullpen guy or two.The FO has a chance to make a huge impact here and why not now? Pushing everything off until next offseason might free some payroll but the best FA guys (Arenado and Anthony Rendon are going to be high dollar guys too.Plus if you make the big play now you wont have as many holes to fill next offseason (Carpenter*,Wacha,Gyorko*,Ozuna,Wainwright, etc).

Ny, I agree on Kelly. It was good to see the Dbacks announce he will be their starting catcher.

I agree Bw52. They have to be all in for 2019 for this trade to work the best. Get Bumgarner and Britton. Move CMart as closer. I am disappointed they didn’t get Harper but then make it work in 2019 since you put all you eggs in 2019’s basket.

BW… you must have your extra rose-colored glasses on. Do you really think that one year of Goldschmidt alone, puts the Cards in contention for anything? Carpenter playing 3rd and Fowler in RF doesn’t make for a successful team.

Ny, as CC pointed out, Goldschmidt is worth 3-4 incremental wins. What would that have meant in 2018? And I don’t think anyone is suggesting they are done. It is unreasonable for them to add a couple more wins in the pen? After all, there is a lot of room for improvement there and today is only December 6.

The Cards had one of the worst bullpens in the league and a black hole in RF in 2018. Injury-wise, they were among the hardest hit teams. They added a superstar to the IF. Even bringing the bullpen to average and RF to the same, and adding a little bit of injury luck makes this team 6-7 wins better. You think 94-95 wins isn’t “in contention for anything”…?

I’d give it a B. I was never a Weaver or Kelly fan and Goldschmidt is very good, especially at 14 million. But he refused an extension so he’s gone after 2019 and we’ll be looking for TWO middle of the order bats for 2020.

Goldschmidt didn’t refuse an extension. The D’Backs refused to let the Cardinals negotiate with him pending a trade, correct? Plus, there is no incentive for Goldschmidt to accept an extension right now.

Nice on paper and with all the fantasy baseball fans. The thing is you need to actually win games on the field!!!!

Like I said I love Goldschmidt in a Cards uniform…. but not for just 1 season and he won’t be back for ’20. That is a guarantee.

With a middle of the lineup of
DeJong, Goldy, Ozuna, Martinez, Molina, and either O’Neill or a much improved Fowler this team is very well set on the position side once they get a backup catcher and a LH outfielder for the bench. Then rotation and right side of the BP are excellent. Just need a left handed arm or two for the pen.

This is from Langosch’s article from yesterday.

The Cardinals did not request an opportunity to explore a contract extension with Goldschmidt before agreeing to the trade. Instead, they’ll pay Goldschmidt the $14.5 million he’s owed this year with the hope of turning a short-term payoff into a long-term gain. The Cardinals believe Goldschmidt will be more compelled to stay in St. Louis after playing here for a season.

Anyone who says it’s a guarantee that Rosy won’t be back in 2020 doesn’t portray much credibility.
If they really like him, they’ll go the extra mile to extend him or sign him as a free agent. It’s perfect for their successful business model.

I liked Young, but he was likely a border-line starter candidate at best. And not only that, but we already have several guys that fill that role in the organization that are objectively better than him.

Gyorko – Munoz – Edman – Urias all show a lot more promise. Young will be 25 years of age in 2019 and has just 150 PAs at the AA level.

Is this like when you guaranteed that the front office would be sent packing in September??
