The addition of Goldschmidt could make the 2019 team almost “scary” good. If most everyone stays healthy, these guys could be like the “MV3” clubs of the early 2000s.
With O’Neill in right, you have an offensive threat at every position. The ceiling is high, as there are no less than five potential 30-homer guys, Goldy, DeJong, Carpenter, Ozuna and O’Neill.
Good defense up the middle, and decent starting pitching. The thing now is to somehow come up with a good bullpen. Those are tough as you need a little luck. Relief pitchers can be hot and cold year to year.
I love this trade. It feels like the reverse of the Tommy Pham trade on a higher plain. And as an earlier poster noted, Paul G is simply taking Holland’s place in the payroll. Good job Mo!
I don’t see this as an obstacle to pursuit of any free agent the organization desires. I’m not a Harper fan, especially for a contract that could run $300Mg, but I don’t see Goldy’s acquisition putting an additional $30+Mg annual salary out of reach.
The bullpen (Holland in particular), IMO, cost us a playoff position in 2018. I’d prefer we went with our youth, partly because I don’t trust veteran relievers on contracts beyond 2 years. Our bullpen, as is, can get us to the playoffs (again, IMO).

Certainly Fowler will get a shot, but if O’Neill wins the job in Spring he will be there. I would put O’Neill there regardless, but in real life you are dealing with personalities and other externalities.
It might be that O’Neill’s time comes in 2020 as Ozuna’s replacement. We’ll just have to see.

Well at least now the Card’s FO can’t be accused of not making an effort to secure a post-season spot in ’19. Even if the Cards aren’t playing in Oct’19, we’ll hear their now repetitive “we tried, we gave it our best shot”.

He didn’t perform last year and the only thing that took him out of the lineup was injury
As for Fowler, if he plays it will be because he is performing more like the 2016-17 version.
He’ll play because the FO just won’t admit that Dexy got the better of them to the tune of his gigantic contract. Shildt will play him because Mozeliak will tell him to. I wonder if Goldy will challenge some of Fowler’s leadership and get the team to play hustle, heads-up baseball.
It is nice to hear that the un-gloomies expect Fowler somehow to be rejuvenated and become the player he was three seasons ago. That is some kind of optimism, or just blind faith. Most aren’t drinking the kool-aid.
Gregerson had 44 with the A’s and the Astros. I guess he was firm about keeping it. But do we want to keep Gregerson?
I predict the marketing department will convince someone to convince Gregerson to give up #44 before the season starts. I would imagine #44 Goldy jerseys would sell like hotcakes.

The Cardinals brass sounded pretty self-satisfied at that news conference today, going so far as to say they thought they now had the starting eight players in the house for next year. I hope that doesn’t mean they are going to ease up on the gas and lay back until spring training. There are still places where improvements could be made besides the bullpen. Why stop at one good acquisition? There are still some good bats out there. It’s too early for “Our work is done here.”
CIF, I did not hear any questions about relief today, but other reports have them clearly in the market for bullpen help. Of course, relievers are not among the “starting eight”, which he said is “highly probable” that they already have in house. Mo also reiterated the search for a left-handed hitting reserve bat is underway. Personally, it was what I had expected to hear, but I know there are others who were hoping he would make a bolder statement, one that would have been non-Cardinals-like.
