I’ll hold off on the O’Neill love until the games start meaning something. Hopefully it is a peek at what’s to come, but we need to see it during the real deal games. The outfield and starting pitching will either propel the team or cause it to not reach its potential this season.

There is no way Bob Gibson would allow a 22 pitch at bat. After about 7 or 8 pitches you throw one a bit too far inside.

    Carp 2B

    DeJong SS
    O’Neill LF

All starters except for Edman, who will enter the game later to relieve Carp.
    No DH today.

I’m very hesitant to want to see Gant in the rotation as opposed to the bullpen, but the Cards may really have no choice to start the season. Ideally we’d get Mikolas and Kim back and he could go back to being a dominant middle inning fireman.

Gant spots the Nats an early lead on a gopher ball. He’s sitting 90-91 as a starter, which is considerably down from his velocity as a reliever.

Joann looked better that inning, 25.

O’Neill just looking locked in. He took a couple of pitches that looked to be hittable, then inside outs one over the first baseman for a double. Not a hard hit ball, but he went down and got that pitch down and away.

    Very nice job by O’Neill.

Carlson took a pretty prime fastball in a 2-1 count, only to swing at a pitch away on the edge, grounding out end the inning. Danny mentioned it, but it’s an example of a young hitter trying to get too cute. You’ve got a man on 2nd and 2 out…your best pitch of the at bat may be that 2-1 fastball. Gotta try to drive that.

Oh no! Bader is back to redoing his gloves after every pitch, his cocky little bat flip, and swinging at a 3rd strike out of the strike zone.

Marp with the warning track power to end the 3rd.

Whitley’s all business. Got some good stuff. Like him.

Oppo field triple by Carlson to deep LC gives the Cards their first run of the day. His first XBH and 4th RBI of the spring. Then double by Gorman in to RF corner scores Carlson to tie the score at 2-2.

Lotta time left but to this point, if the OF is truly up to the competition, I’m seeing Carlson, Thomas, O’Neill rt to left. Carlson needs to be playing everyday. Love speed and defense but if you can’t hit a lick you shouldn’t be a starter on a contender. Bader a bench player at best.
O’Neill has looked way better to this date. Maybe he’s figuring it out a bit. Gant looked like he is ready to fill a spot in the rotation.

Great to see the kids with the triple then double. Flash of the future.

It’s nice to see the present and the future in this inning. Carlson, Gorman, Goldschmidt, and Arenado hiting the ball very hard.

Miler looked really good in his inning there. Would be nice to have him be good this year.

O’Neill with another base hit. He’s now hitting .500 this spring.

Really good to see O’Neill hitting like this.

Carlson with the walk and Bader with the single, and the Cards are trying for a out rally.

Did Bader adjust his gloves and give a bat twirl? That’s more important than the hit.

Sosa not letting Rondon get the jump on him quietly. Nice double, advanced on the sac fly and a wild pitch scores him.

This time up, Forsch, only adjusted his gloves while stepping out of the box every single pitch and make everyone wait…. the pitcher, the opposing position players, the fans, etc. No bat flip this at bat.

The Sosa-Rodon competition is really fun to watch, 25.

Reyes in for the 9th and he just looks the part. A K on a nice changeup, followed by a grounder to the SS, and finishes with a grounder.

Another thing to note…Knizner whiffed on two straight curve balls that Reyes threw after running the count 0-2 on the last batter. Not a great look there, as he will have to work on catching stuff that moves like Reyes, Carlos, Libby and a few others throw.

Randy with .488 spring OPS and 33% K rate. Meaningless small blocks of data work in all directions…
