25, average mlb fastball is under 93 mph. So depending on your definition of succeed ….
Technically, I said excel, which I would say would be a #1-2, front of the rotation starter. Most of them are throwing mid 90s at least.
GameDay made it look like Stroman had an immaculate inning. Alas, it was simply three straight strikeouts. Bader and O’Neill swung and missed thrice each.
Looking ahead… The Cardinals will play a pair of split squad games Thursday, hosting the Mets (1:05
p.m. local time) in Jupiter, and traveling to West Palm Beach for a night game (6:05 p.m.) against the Nationals. Adam Wainwright is scheduled to start tomorrow afternoon’s game in Jupiter with LHP Kwang Hyun Kim, RHP Johan Oviedo, RHP John Brebbia and RHP Kodi Whitley to follow. Carlos Martinez will draw the starting assignment in the night game against the Nationals. He is scheduled to be followed by LHP Zack Thompson, RHP Jake Woodford and RHP Ryan Helsley.PDL did a great job getting out of the 5th with limited damage done, and stranding the bases loaded.

Fernandez has the stuff and demeanor of a closer. PDL stays in the chase for a starting job. Espn analyst and former Cardinal Perez impressed by Cards catcher Ortega.
Several people implied that I was flat wrong about Mendoza being able to play short because the organization almost never used him at short – yet here he is in his last two appearances in MLB Spring training paying SS.
TCN subscribers knew two months ago that Mendoza was exclusively playing shortstop during instructional camp. As I mentioned to Danny Mac in our podcast just today, it appears Mendoza is being groomed to be an MLB utility man.

Schrock, Gorman, Godoy, Antonini, Mendoza, Nogowski, Baker, Robertson, Hernández, Wilson, Pages is the bench.
That leaves Carlson, O’Neill, Sosa, Wieters, Knizner, Williams, etc. etc. for the nightcap.

The first game will have the better lineup, but it will be nice to see the kids play the evening game. Wish Gorman was starting there.

That’s smart. He would be a solid utility guy going forward.
Waino not great today with 5 ER allowed, but the offense had one great inning to bail him out. Dejong, Carp and Thomas all with dingers in the 6 run 4th inning for a 6-5 lead.
Mendoza has been playing some short since reaching AA. He is very similar to Mejia from three years ago with a slightly stronger arm.
I have been shocked any time someone questions CC’s knowledge. CC is always right in my book.Brebbia and Gant haven’t looked that good so far this spring. Oveido and Whitley have been impressive, and Kim has been good this year too.
The few times I saw Mejia, I thought he was very efficient and slick with the glove. I guess he didn’t have enough stick to make it.
Which reminds me (off topic), I have a question for the rules nerds (I’m probably one too). I saw Mejia lay down a walk off suicide squeeze for Memphis in 2018. The pitcher fielded the ball and just held it with no hope of stopping the winning run from scoring. Mejia ran all the way to 1B, but could’ve been thrown out if it weren’t a walk off situation. Should Mejia be credited with a single or sac? Not a trick question — I don’t know the answer without researching it.
