February 29, 2020 at 10:39 am #123785After Martinez, also scheduled to pitch today are RHP Ryan Helsley, RHP Jake Woodford, LHP Giovanny Gallegos and LHP Tyler Webb.
Sunday after starter LHP Austin Gomber: RHP John Gant, RHP Junior Fernandez and RHP Kodi Whitley.
February 29, 2020 at 11:06 am #123790I imagine they will trim some starting candidates in the next 10 days or so. So far Reyes is the only one who has not looked good. Cabrera and PDL are dark horses for jobs.
February 29, 2020 at 11:53 am #123795We still have a few weeks to go but at this point I think Reyes will start the year in Memphis and that is ok. He has missed most of the last three years. He just needs some innings to shake the rust off then come up to St. Louis a little later.
Mid-season additions of Reyes, Carlson, and Hicks would be a nice boost to the team, not to mention Mikolas.

You bet. I’d love to see Reyes and Hicks along with the rest of the bullpen flame throwers come late August/September and an OF of O’Neill-Bader/Thomas-Carlson sounds pretty nice. Dexter could be the bench bat.

stlcard25ParticipantEarly on, Paul Dejong led off the B2nd with a homer.
Looks like a typical Cmart outing…2 innings, 3 walks, 2 Ks.
February 29, 2020 at 1:19 pm #123801CMart ended with 3 innings, around 50 pitches, 3BB and 4K’s. He looked really good in the 2nd and 3rd.

stlcard25ParticipantCFICT, was there any mention on the telecast of velocity? I feel like the Carlos of 2015-17 who could sit 94-95 and dial it up from there was more effective than Carlos of 2018-19 who seemed to pitch at lower speeds.
February 29, 2020 at 2:05 pm #123803ST25, I don’t recall any numbers being mentioned at all. There was a little talk in the 3rd I believe about the movement on his pitches. In my untrained eye, the movement and velocity looked very good. Three innings and 51 pitches while seemingly getting better throughout was a great sign as far as him going to the rotation. If 2015-17 CMart can be found, having him and JF as a 1-2 punch would be huge. Kim has done nothing but impress as well…
I’ve mentioned this 70-80 times at least, but I am still not a fan of Jake Woodford.

stlcard25ParticipantHelsley has had a nice spring so far, too. I like him as a candidate for late inning work. It’s good to have the depth of quality arms that this team has right now.
Woodford is a guy who just has never seemed to impress at a high level. Maybe he could be a back end rotation guy but the Cards have a lot of options for that area right now.

Yeah. I think that Mo has been impressed by Carlos’ offseason commitment. You heard him speak positively about it during some of his talks so far. Cmart has probably the best stuff of any pitcher on the staff save *maybe* Reyes so if he can be a front of the rotation starter, that would be a great combo to have.
February 29, 2020 at 2:31 pm #123807was there any mention on the telecast of velocity?
stlcard, I was curious too. Gamecast on MLB.com had most of his fastballs in the low 90s, 90-92 range. I saw a couple reach 93.
February 29, 2020 at 3:53 pm #123808Two very nice catches by Ravelo in LF, saved a run or more.
Carlson – That boy is headed NORTH. Played the whole game today for a good look. He fits the bill.

ParticipantI agree with Minuteman. What more “seasoning” does Carlson need?

Which young player who hasn’t been given their own fair shot yet is going to ride the pine? Unless they bench Fowler, Carlson will probably end up in Memphis until June or so.

Participant25 – What do you do if Carlson clearly outplays O’Neill during all of Spring Training? Do you say O’Neill has earned the chance to prove himself, or do you go with the best player in LF?
February 29, 2020 at 7:06 pm #1238131982 willie
Participantwell I guess since we are just going to make moves based on what they have done in a few games here in spring ball, I guess edman, wieters, wong and a few others should be sent back down to the minors.

Mo has repeatedly said that O’Neill, Thomas, etc will get the chance to prove themselves. Unless each of those guys is hitting .100 or something all spring and Carlson keeps hitting .500, I just don’t see the Cards changing the plan, which is Carlson to Memphis and O’Neill/Thomas/Bader in the St Louis OF fighting for LF and CF.
February 29, 2020 at 9:22 pm #123819bccran
ParticipantWell, we’ll have to see.
O’Neill struck out 53 times in 151 plate appearances last season.
Couple that with Bader’s .205 batting average and we certainly have two players who have earned starting jobs. Add in Thomas who hit .268 at Memphis last season and struck out 80 times in 304 plate appearances and the competition is fierce.March 1, 2020 at 5:06 am #123824For as much as they have been playing Ravelo, I definitely wouldn’t count him out as the LF either.
March 1, 2020 at 7:02 am #123825bccran
ParticipantRavelo the last 3 seasons at Memphis –
2017 – .314/.383/.480/.863
2018 – .308/.392/.487/.879
2019 – .299/.373/.473/.856His K rate at AAA has been 15%.
His problem has been that he’s been blocked as a first baseman. Now that they’ve played him in the outfield some, he probably deserves as much of a chance as anyone.
March 1, 2020 at 7:13 am #123827Ravelo has played in the outfield every season for the last four years – since before he joined the Cardinals. It is not new.
March 1, 2020 at 7:15 am #123829#stlcards vs. Houston today:
Wong 4
DeJong 6
Goldschmidt 3
O’Neill 7
Miller 5
Bader 8
Williams 9

It wouldn’t be an affront to Carlson if he gets some time to mature in Memphis while those guys get to work out the OF situation among themselves for a bit.
March 1, 2020 at 7:20 am #123831One of those interesting twists in yesterdays box score: Jake Woodford got the win but he gave up 3 hits and 3 runs to also get a blown save. Pitching stats really leave a lot to be desired and I have always supported letting the manager decide who deserves a win in each game the team wins. Also allowed would be 1/2 wins to award two pitchers. Makes about as much sense as what they use today. Mandatory 5 innings for a starter to get a win but one pitch for all others. JMHO.
