Could really use a quality start from Weaver tonight. For whatever reason he seems to have regressed from the end of last season. Not sure if it was a change in philosophy or what but he’s got the talent to pitch well enough to give this team breathing room.

Another note on Dejong…in his year of PT post callup, he’s hitting .279/.332/.517 for a 123 wRC+ over 614 PA. He’s hit 33 homers and driven in 84 with an ever-improving batting eye and defense that has been solid at short. That adds up to 4.7 fWAR. He’s a bright guy too, which gives hope that he will keep this up. He’s a big piece to get back in the lineup.
Shortstop Paul DeJong, who homered and doubled in his final rehab game Tuesday with Class AAA Memphis, will join the Cards on Thursday in San Francisco, but won’t be activated.
Matheny said the major-league training staff will run the shortstop through another battery of tests and the earliest DeJong could be in the lineup Friday. He suffered a broken hand on May 18 and had surgery to aid its healing. He has been able to rebuild his grip strength in recent weeks, and in four games with the Triple-A Redbirds DeJong went four for 13 (.308) with three extra-base hits and four strikeouts.
Dexter Fowler, who spent the Arizona series on the paternity list, will, by rule, return to the team and the active roster before Thursday’s game, Matheny confirmed.
Dejong should be back in this series.

6-3 would be nice but 5-4 is probably more realistic. At this point I think this team just needs to keep winning series, any way possible. A sweep at any time would be a huge boost, if nothing else to make the record “feel” a bit better. To put it another way, the Cards arguably outplayed 3 of 4 straight division leading teams, won 2.5 series and yet were a game under .500 despite all that thanks to the sweep.
I really like what Gorman brings, but I hesitate to get terribly excited after watching Delvin Perez light up the GCL his first few weeks after signing. Gorman seems a safer bet but there’s a long way to go.

Leadoff double for Carpenter, followed by groundout, K, K. Such is why this team is struggling to stay afloat. They must be among the worst in the majors with RISP.
I could get behind that, bc…except for the Schrock idea. He hasn’t done anything in Memphis to show that he would hit any well in St Louis, and he’s definitely not going to be better than Wong in the field.
Unfortunately, this team doesn’t have the luxury of hiding a bad bat in the lineup. It’s really amazing how so many players have gone through absolutely awful stretches and the team has stayed above .500 somehow.
Bc, so what happens if those three were to be traded or let go?
Will the team suddenly start to play better? Chemistry will return?

Sure, that’s true but it’s still something that only one pitcher in this game is stuck dealing with. Greinke has been getting junk called off the plate all night. It’d be nice if it was consistent, is all.
I also put blame on Molina for the Goldschmidt homer. There was no reason to nibble. Goldie struggles on catching up to gas and hadn’t done much against Flaherty to prove he could hit the fastball anyway. Everyone knew an inside pitch probably Ks him.
This is ridiculous. Greinke gets the strike call about 4″ down and away, Flaherty can’t even get a call on a painted corner. There is no doubt who is getting the favorite status in this game.
All those stupid nibbles. It’s like Molina has forgotten that Flaherty has actual stuff and doesn’t have to play around with hitters like this.
Still wouldn’t matter without that terrible umpire.
Jack with a nice 2nd…Greinke is settling in as well. Hopefully Flaherty can hold em down, because I fear 2 runs might be all they get from Greinke for the next 4-5 innings.
Hit and run with the pitcher…an interesting choice. Guess they were scared to bunt to Greinke. Ends up in a double play to end the inning.
