Regarding Jonathan Schoop – the Brewers non-tendered him yesterday, and their GM said that acquiring him was a mistake and “that’s all on me.”
When was the last time the Cardinals front office admitted a mistake and said, “it’s all on me?”
Heyward affected their thinking on one year players…
Fowler affected their thinking on long term deals, even for mid-level contracts, as now we are apparently stuck with Fowler. Fowler probably also affected their due diligence, because he apparently had them completely convinced he was a leader who would bring the team together, and is evidently the complete opposite.
It looks to me like a hedge the bet kind of move.
It looks to me like another case where they refuse to admit they made a mistake. He was the centerpiece of the Voit deal, correct?
Yangveris Solarte could make a good utility player…
Luis Avilan would be another LHP to consider…
Shelby Miller was non-tendered by the Diamondbacks…
I think of the relief pitchers, I’d be most interested in Hunter Strickland and Dan Jennings (LHP)…
If you’re looking for a backup catcher with positional flexibility, I’d go with Chris Herrmann, who can also play corner outfield (what?????)…
It means they didn’t offer a one year contract to the arbitration-eligible player and that player becomes a free agent
Like the Cardinals?
Danny Salazar of Cleveland is one that they are speculating might be non-tendered due to injuries and payroll.

November 30, 2018 at 11:52 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #75443In addition to taking back the contracts of Bruce and Swarzak, it is reported the Mariners are going to be paying $60 million of Cano’s remaining contract.
Not exactly saving a lot of money.
November 30, 2018 at 10:01 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #75421Yeah, you actually have to have a lead to utilize a closer.
But if Cespedes can actually play this year, they might be a fairly good team…
And it’s rumored Jay Bruce is going to Seattle as part of the deal. Maybe we can swap Bruce for Fowler after all (since DiPoto will make a trade just to make a trade).
I don’t see where Atlanta is legally obligated to do anything for 2020. This whole “QO promise” is just a verbal agreement right?
Contracts can be verbal – if there is an exchange of considerations. So, if Donaldson turned down a higher offer because of this promise, he can argue the money he gave up was a consideration….
November 29, 2018 at 10:46 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #75356I mean, Seattle needs outfielders as well. Trade JMart + Adolis Garcia for Colome and clear a roster space for an inevitable LH reliever signing…
November 29, 2018 at 10:39 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #75353JMart is only valuable to the Cardinals if they use him exclusively as a PH and emeregency outfielder.
But Seattle is trying to dump salary, and I still think the best trade for him is Alex Colome, who made over $5 million last year and will probably make more than $7 million this year.
If we have to throw in a mid-tier prospect to get the deal done, do it, because acquiring Jose Martinez only cost the Cardinals some money…
November 29, 2018 at 8:06 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #75316Here is why that trade doesn’t make sense from Minnesota’s perspective:
1. They made the playoffs two years ago, were expected to make the playoffs last year, and are reportedly trying to make the playoffs this year
2. They are allegedly going after free agents that they normally wouldn’t because they had $77 million in salaries come off the books this year
3. They can readily find DH type hitters on the cheap on the open market. CJ Cron was a waiver wire claim, and he gives them 30 HR’s per year.
4. They are in the AL Central. The only team in that division competing for the playoffs besides Minnesota is Cleveland. Cleveland is exploring trading some of their starting pitchers to maintain payroll.
5. If they make the playoffs, don’t you think they would want an exceptional reliever on their team? So, why would Minnesota make the trade of Rogers for JMart?
I would think it would be much more likely they would trade a prospect that hasn’t yet reached the majors.

Here are the renderings of the new Oakland A’s stadium. They want to finance it entirely themselves. I guess after amassing billions of dollars in corporate welfare, they can afford to…
The Jewel BoxBravo to the Giants for forcing them off welfare and making them actually market their team.
November 28, 2018 at 11:30 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #75271The Rays got their stadium for FREE. It was built by Hillsborough county in an effort to lure a MLB team, which worked. Unfortunately, the owners keep looking a gift horse in the mouth.
Oakland and Tampa play in dumps in part because they CHOOSE to plead poverty to get $40+ million per year in free money (competitive balance). With competitive balance compensation, MLB TV revenues, merchandise licensing, etc, they get over $100 million per year, just because they are an MLB franchise. When was the last time they had a payroll above $100 million?
It’s too hard to build a winning team that draws fans, so plead poverty, trade away your good players as they are about to get expensive and laugh all the way to the bank. Welfare for billionaires.
In the last CBA, MLB voted to start taking away Oakland’s “small market” subsidy, an effort led by the San Francisco Giants, who consider it absurd that they are in the same market, but one team claims to be a “small market” while the other is a “big revenue” club.
It appears MLB uses team revenue for revenue sharing, because they don’t use any plausible definition of a market. Miami is the 7th largest MSA, Oakland the 12th, Tampa the 18th and St. Louis the 21st. By Television market, Oakland is in the 6th largest market, Tampa the 13th, Miami the 16th and St. Louis the 21st.
Yes, St. Louis draws from a wider fan base, but that’s because of where they put their minor league teams. By putting them within a few hundred miles, they ensure that people that watch the players in the minors come to see them in the majors.
I worked as a valet at the Marriott right next to Busch Stadium in college. Every home weekend, the hotel was filled with people from Arkansas, Memphis, Louisville, Peoria, Springfield and Southern Illinois. The Cardinals were smart where they put their minor league teams, and also helped by the distance to other major cities with ball clubs.
It is almost as strange as the love for Carlos Santana.
Nobody is in love with Santana. But the Cardinals are going to keep trotting Dexter Fowler out there ahead of Tyler O’Neill and whoever else until Fowler is traded.
Fowler was the worst player on the team last year. If you read Goold (who is a glorified Cardinal PR man), the only way we can upgrade RF is to move Fowler. That will involve taking back a bad contract, OR paying down 95% of Fowler’s salary.
But hey, if you are fine with missing the playoffs every year so we don’t hurt Dexter’s feelings, you are certainly free to feel that way.
I would like Fowler gone.
November 27, 2018 at 5:13 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #75221If that was so why are they subtracting from their team useful parts like Cron who makes very little?
Tampa’s business model is to claim poverty, accept $40+ million in revenue sharing per year, and laugh all the way to the bank, just like Miami. The Cardinals, on the other hand, built a team that consistently won, and used that to build a fan base that ranks among the best in baseball. St. Louis is both a smaller metropolitan market and a smaller television market than Tampa (and other “small market” teams like Miami, Oakland, etc).
They are playing in a Stadium that was already built (i.e., they spent nothing to build), but they don’t make enough money, so they are demanding local taxpayers and businesses put up half the money for their new stadium.
C2016, I was reacting to your “fire the front office” comment.
While DeWitt sets the direction, it is Mozeliak who put the blinders on and signed Fowler. It is Mozeliak that allowed the disfunction to grow in the Cardinals club house. It is Mozeliak who creates the culture of appeasing overpaid, past-their-prime players instead of making them compete for their jobs.
November 27, 2018 at 9:55 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #75180I agree Minnesota could still be looking for an inexpensive DH.
White Sox, I think it will depend on whether they can get any free agents to go there and start making a push for the playoffs. Right now, they are too far away.
I also consider Texas too far away from competing.
Everybody in Seattle seems to be saying that they’ve moved on from Cruz. Houston, MN and TB seem the most viable options for Cruz right now.
I agree, Mo pretty much follows the direction set by DeWitt. But this kind of thinking won’t get us into the playoffs anytime soon, and it definitely won’t result in any championships in this era of super teams.
I wonder how many years of missing the playoffs it will take to light a competitive fire under them…
Two different times, he said that one of the reasons Donaldson was not a fit for the Cards is that his salary would be higher than Molina’s,
Wow. Then the front office needs to go.
Also, when they signed Fowler, they justified it that “it’s only money.” Now, they refuse to upgrade right field unless they can move Fowler’s contract.
Ineptitude.
November 26, 2018 at 11:10 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #75142There’s a chance KC would want him back, there you are basically trading for Daniel Lynch or Kris Bubic
November 26, 2018 at 10:42 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #75141JMart makes $500k. Cron was making $5 million.
It’s Tampa. It’s all about going with the lowest payroll possible.
A’s have Khris Davis as DH and Indians have Edwin Encarnacion. Neither team will be in the market for JMart.
Nelson Cruz will likely be the DH in Houston.
That basically leaves trading JMart to Seattle or Tampa, or not trading him at all.
