MLB Network // Cards.TV // KMOX // WIJRThose showers that delayed the game last night hit us here in SW Indiana about 2:30 this morning. They woke up both me and Whitey Herdog. And now I can’t get back to sleep so here I am, on the computer.
Whitey Herdog is snoozing away, however.
Question: Once our Cardinals have been eliminated, who do I watch to finish out the season. I rarely watch other teams except on off days or rainouts and I need to squeeze out the last remaining baseball joys of the season. Suggestions? I had thought of course of following the Dodgers but then I don’t want to saddle myself with a west coast team nine time zones away. Or perhaps just draw a game at random out of a hat every day.
You are probably asking yourselves what is CiF having for din-din this evening. Well, in the oven as I type this is a veal roast sizzling gently, a couple of baking potatoes, and a pot of corn. When I went to the bakery for bread this morning I was seduced by a lovely chocolate cake with raspberries (which we already tested out at lunch). Yum.
OK. On with the rebuild! Rah Cardinals.
The current weather conditions in the greater St. Louis area all appear to be clear. There is, however, a band of storms just north of the Kansas City area that could possibly impact the St. Louis area later today.
Just have to stay tuned……
The late Sept. scramble and the ensuing mayhem that takes place for a post-season berth is always interesting, CIF, and the Oct. run to decide the WS champs is sure to provide some first rate high stakes baseball action. I’ll be looking at the Dodgers simply because Freeman and Edman are two players that I really enjoy watching and it’ll be interesting to see if the Dodgers can complete the first 3-peat in 26 years. In my view, they have the brute force to do so but, it’s never easy and, if I knew what was going to happen next I wouldn’t bother to watch. In any case, if you enjoy Big League baseball action, late Sept and the month of Oct. are when a baseball fan really hits the proverbial jackpot.

Nathan Church (L) CFCIF, you pose an interesting question regarding who to root for in October. Once the Cardinals season is over my interest in the playoffs is very diminished, however, if forced to choose I would probably pull for the Brewers this year and there are a couple of reasons for that.
First of all I know it is somewhat sacrilegious to root for a division rival. I get that. I mean if the Cubs were playing against the Russians I would have to reluctantly side with the Rooskies.
But the Brewers have a style of play to be admired. They are gritty and play a lot of small ball with good defense, good pitching, good base running, and timely hitting. And they don’t have a lot of big name, high priced all stars either. They kind of remind me of a Whitey Herzog team. I also suspect that Dewitt and Bloom like their model although probably wouldn’t say so publicly.
The other reason is that the Brewers winning the World Series would make Manfred look like a fool as if he needs any help. His kamikaze mission of salary cap or bust needs to be derailed.
I can enjoy a game without rooting for either side. I just like watching the game being played. I think it comes from watching so many games as a kid where neither I nor whoever I was with had a dog in the fight. We just went to watch the game. A lot of times we just wanted to go to a ballpark we had never been to and just watch whatever game was being played.
I mean if the cubs were playing against the Russians, I would have to reluctantly side with the Rooskies.

And what another din-din for the ages Cardinal in France has in the hopper this evening. Honestly, Julia Child had nothing over Cardinal in France in the delicious cuisine department.
Beautiful meteorological report as always, Rat! You know, reading weather reports from Rat holds all of the excitement as the Cardinals having the bases loaded with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th in a tie ballgame vs our arch rivals.
If the Cardinals aren’t involved in post season play, I always root for the largest underdog. Also, going out to your local park to watch men’s fast pitch softball is pretty exciting to. I haven’t done this in years, but as a kid, when staying at my grandmother’s house along the banks of the Wisconsin River in Portage, Wisconsin, I spent many a night down at the fairgrounds watching these underhand fast pitch games…….and they were absolutely marvelous. Just thinking back to that location in that era, conjures up Field of Dreams like sentiments.
I’m of a similar mindset, Bling. In a sense, it’s nice to watch these post-season games when my favorite team isn’t paricipating simply because I don’t have to endure the gut wrenching suspense coupled up with a heartrate that resembles the pace of a Buddy Rich drum solo…That sort of intense cardio workout can be dicey when you’re pushing 70.
I really hope they’re both inducted into Cooperstown the same year. It’d be a shame if they weren’t. Those two weren’t at all unlike the Skipper and his little buddy, Gilligan…Haha!
The Indians have already lost to the Twins tonight so these White Sox could give themselves a sliver of breathing room atop the ALC if they could scuffle back and win this game. Meanwhile, the Braves are effectively deep 6’ing the Phillies as they enjoy a comfortable 8-1 lead in the 6th inning down in ATL. With a W the Braves will hold a commanding 6 game lead in the NLE with only 14 games to play. They wouldn’t choke that sort of lead up, would they?
Cards lead 4-1 in the 5th.
Reds getting pounded for a 3rd straight game. 13-5 Brewers in the 5th.
Braves pounding the Phils. 9-1 in the 6th. This will put the Cubs a game up in the wild card race against the Phils.
Hjerpe all sorts of off tonight. This seems to happen to him from time to time where his mechanics get off. Tonight is exceptionally bad though.
Like Baez’ opening day, Hjerpe got a little too overhyped. He is a good player and should be good for some time, but still is learning and trying to come back from a long injury.
Caray termed it a “tricky hop.” Nothing at all tricky about it. A serviceable 3B’man has to make the play on that GB.
Stanek’s been able to slowly blend in to an area that could be termed somewhat respectable, but if he’s on the 26 man opening day ’27 roster, it’ll immediately indicate to me that the Cardinals plan on another season of going through the motions without exerting a genuine effort to win something meaningful.
