The Yankees and Angels would be most likely for Yadi if he leaves with the White Sox as a dark horse.

I’d include the Mets. It’s actually one place where he could step in and say he actually did do something to help out their abysmal staff. The offense certainly would be able to support his weak bat. The Mets could bring in Bauer and have DeGrom, Thor returning from injury and still have money to pick up a couple decent cheap arms for their rotation (Kluber? Ray? Paxton?). The team pitching will be better without any doubt, and Yadi would get a lot of credit.

Whoever doesn’t get Realmuto would consider Yadi next? Or would you put James McCann ahead of Yadi too?

Molina’s demands to play every game, his controversial comments over and over and his ego will likely hurt his getting the money and two years that he thinks he deserves. Yadi will never get the respect he thinks he has earned outside of St. Louis because of the legacy thing. Our FO probably realizes this.

Fortunately or unfortunately, (depending on how you view his value to the team) he will most likely stay unless he follows Wainwright down to Atlanta. I still think that he would favor Miami but if he does walk it will be his loss. He has a cushy job here.

“The Braves are quietly exploring the feasibility of adding Yadier Molina.”

OK, aren’t 28 other teams doing the same? Isn’t that called due diligence?

Would Yadi really want to go somewhere that he wouldn’t be the primary catcher? D’Arnaud had a great 2020 and is still there next year.

The only difference with the Braves is they probably know that Waino would strongly consider them and that Waino and Yadi would like to be a tandem. The other teams don’t have that “advantage”.

It is the same every year. Even if it is not yet a rumor, people can put things out that are very generic and some will hop all over it the same as if Molina was spotted in the Atlanta airport. Some people are already committing virtual suicide on Twitter over Waino and Yadi joining the Braves. Yesterday, it was TLR “signing” them for the White Sox. So be it.

Yep. As expected, big bro Bengie plays the “respect” card…

Funny how when Waino was in the EXACT same situation in each of the last two years, he wasn’t upset. Or even if he was, he kept so quiet about it that no one ever knew.

Its sad how many guys who play MLB dont understand the business aspects. No wonder they keep getting screwed in the CBAs

    “Cooperative Bargaining Agreement”

    that’s kind of funny.
I suspect you did that on purpose Brian.

No, it is a wiring problem in my brain. Sometimes I say orange when I mean yellow. I do appreciate the editing help and I am glad you like the article.

That was a very well written article. The sentence below is the only thing I would disagree with.

Recently, seemingly every time something happens across MLB, fatalistic Cardinals fans assume the worst is right around the corner.

That seems to imply that Cardinal fans are afraid that Molina will go elsewhere. Perhaps the majority do feel that way but I do not.

Does that mean that I dislike Yadi? No, not at all.

Does that mean I have no respect for his HOF career? No, not at all. He has been one of the greatest Cardinals ever and will no doubt wear a red jacket one day.

We are reminded everyday, especially within the last week, that MLB is a bottom line business so I don’t see why it is a problem if fans also take that same cold, calculated approach. Why should owners, PBO’s, and GM’s have all the fun?

Building rosters should be about production and making the pieces fit to maximize results. If the Cardinals are truly at the end of their rope on spending more for 2021 does it make more sense to spend on Yadi and nothing else or spend on another bat and let Knizer catch everyday. I would choose option 2 if we have to choose between the two.

The Cardinals should be about maximizing winning instead of building legacies. That is what got us into this payroll mess in the first place so let’s not assume all Cardinal fans are afraid he will leave.

IMO Molina can go get his two years elsewhere. It`s time to look ahead instead of hanging on to a declining star.Molina has done much in Stlouis but it is still a business.Time for Knizner to get a real shot.If Wainwright will do another incentive deal then sign him if he agrees.I say let Wong go also.Give Edman first dibs at 2B.If i had my way i would trade Carlos Martinez for a couple of prospects (if anybody is interested and he is healthy enough to be traded)..Trade Fowler and Carpenter even if you have to eat half their salaries and go with kids/prospects.IMO there is not a untouchable player on the team.(except Carlson,Edman).

I actually tend to agree with you, but your interpretation of my quoted sentence is not what I said (or at least meant to say).

I did not say ALL Cardinals fans. I said fatalistic ones, of which there are many these days.

I try very hard to avoid generalizations that are clearly untrue, which saying ALL would have been.

The angry voices are almost always loudest, whether majority or minority. And there are many who seem convinced that Molina is leaving and are upset at the Cardinals for not signing him already. (Generally, people here on this board are better at thinking through situations. That is not often the case on social media, where screaming and ranting are the norm.)

That you don’t agree with them is closer to my personal view, FWIW, but the article isn’t about that. I used the above statement to set up examples of what worried fans are assuming about Molina’s new home.

Hope that clarifies. Thanks for reading and commenting.

BW52, I get where you are going with your post. In a normal winter, unloading contracts with partial salaries might work. But this winter, with so much available talent that is NOT clearly in the decline phase of their careers, finding takers for the Cardinals bad contracts, even with partial salary coverage, would be close to impossible, IMO. They should try for sure, but expecting success is another matter.

I do disagree with the last statement, though, making Edman one of the team’s two untouchables. But this talk should be on another thread as it does not relate to Molina, so I will still stop there.

P.S. It is a good idea, though. Maybe folks would like to each list their untouchable Cardinals. That could be an interesting new thread if you or someone wants to start it.

I strongly think Yadi will be back. Unless his ego gets in the way with Bill and Mo. He’s made a ton of money. If offered a fair contract from the Cards for someone his age he should accept it.

It depends on whether the two sides agree on how the word “fair” actually translates to money. It is a rare situation indeed when a player says, “I have made enough money already, so I took less to stay.” But maybe Molina will be the exception. I am not holding my breath, though.

P.S. I bet any player who would actually make such a public statement would quickly receive a call from Tony Clark asking them to be quiet.

I just hope that when a player makes $20 a year, they don’t think that a lot less than that is a slap in the face. Does he realize that he’s not at that level any longer? If he comes off as too greedy, he’ll turn teams off.

Well, in the last week in two different interviews, Bengie Molina pretty much said just that.

Teams will offer what THEY believe is fair. Like Ozuna last winter, if Molina overshoots the market and no one will pay his asking price, he will have to lower his expectations. A team that is “turned off” will likely turn back “on” if/when the demands drop. Nothing unique to Molina here. It is how the game is played.

Yadi (and his brothers) are too proud to admit Yadi is in decline has been for a few years. Heck even Waino went from $19M to $2M base pay in 2019 because he accepted that he wasn’t performing enough to justify the $19M salary. I doubt Molina would do the same thing to his own detriment.

Molina has said straight out that he wants to get a few more accolades to make sure he gets in the HOF. Taking a cut in pay would be contrary to that goal, IMO. The best thing that Yadi could do to improve his HOF credentials would be to go to New York for 2 years and $20M-$25M and help get them to the World Series.

Mud, you may well be right. I also think Hall voters are suckers for guys who play their career in one place, so I think St Louis might be the best place for his overall legacy.

While I agree that Yadi has not been as good in recent years, he’s still been a solid starting catcher. Pitchers who may be out of gas (like Waino definitely was after 2018) have to take incentive laden deals. Starting position players usually don’t.

That’s not to say that I don’t think that’s what he should be offered. I’d like to see something like a $6-8M base with some incentives like 100 games started, Gold Glove, MVP of a playoff series, etc. Would that be enough? Probably not.

Don’t get me wrong…the dropoff from Yadi to Knizner would be massive. I would expect the Cards to lose 4+ more games with Knizner behind the plate as I think he’s a Wieters level catcher. But he could be a bridge to Herrera and a bat-first backup.
