He basically says that the Cards have very little leverage with Molina because they have so mishandled Knizer that they have no MLB ready catcher to take over full time, and they don’t have the money for Realmuto, therefore, they must re-sign Molina.
He went on to say that the Cardinals have done a poor job of developing position players, etc….. I thought the article was a little too harsh although I do agree about the mishandling of Knizer.

Mo was asked about Knizner.
“We would like to see him get more opportunity than the 17 at-bats he got this season. There could be another face in the mix (if Molina does not return).”
Yadi will bring fans in next year so you’d think that they would *like* to bring him back. But Yadi also has a very high view of himself and could price himself right out of the Cards’ ability to sign him.
Ironically, some of Yadi’s HOF credentials will rest on his narrative of one team for his career. He would have to go somewhere and win a title or at least a pennant for it not to be a net negative to his HOF chances.
I dunno. A lot of guys hang on for a year or two with other teams. I think Yadi has accomplished enough already.
As far as this winter, I predict the Cardinals are going to stall for weeks to even make him an offer (because they know they are too far apart). That will frustrate Molina and he will go public with his concerns.
I am actually now buying into the idea we may be looking at a Knizer-Weiters tandem next year and the Knizer part of the equation excites me.

I don’t want Wieters back under any circumstances. I would rather have Knizner start with one of the minors guys being brought up (Rodriguez is supposedly a good glove, right?) than trust any part of the battery to Wieters. He was awful in every phase of the game this year.
I don’t want Wieters either but when does our front office do what I want?
As for Yadi, if he really decides to bolt I see him going to the Angels.
Mark Saxon wrote about Molina and Wainwright. Bengie Molina clearly doesn’t understand the 20% maximum salary reduction being the reason why Yadi was not re-signed sooner, which makes me seriously wonder if Yadi doesn’t know too.
When I wrote the other day that Yadi needs people around him who understand what is going on, this is the kind of thing I was talking about. Though in all fairness, his agent should be all over this.
And Saxon did not call it out, either.

It always blows me away when I see that people on this board have a better idea of how the business of baseball works than the actual people involved. Amazing.
My real concern is what Yadi thinks. If Bengie is repeating what he is hearing from his brother, Yadi may already be feeling disrespected, because he doesn’t understand how salaries are dictated by the CBA. Of even if he knows, why doesn’t his brother?
I can’t see Yadi going to a team with no chance to win. I realize that they lucked out in the short season but they’ll lose 90 games next year.
There is little doubt that Molina likes playing with younger guys. They would be players that Molina could point to and say “look how I improved this team”. That is if they actually improve… especially pitchers.

Improved from 68 to 70 wins? Unless the Marlins are his only bidder, there’s no way he goes there. If he’s looking for a young team in warm weather, he goes to San Diego. If he wants the big city, New York. It will be a team that is built to win.
I tend to agree. In terms of what matters most to Molina I would guess it is ranked something like this:
Chance to play every day to increase my personal counting stats and games played
Chance to win another World Series to enhance my legacy
Respectful contract, ideally two years
Remaining a career Cardinal

Who would spend on Yadi as a FA? The NYY are not too thrilled with Arb2 Sanchez. The NYM have already declined Ramos and Chirinos options, which leaves Nido who has started about 70 games. Who else is willing to spend, and do they need a catcher?
The long game this offseason may not benefit Yadi.
The Yankees and Angels would be most likely for Yadi if he leaves with the White Sox as a dark horse.
