I could see two possible scenarios for Woodruff. He signs now and has someone paying him while he rehabs, but likely has to take less money than he’d like for 2024 and 2025. Another scenario is that he gets well first and shows teams through workouts that he is ready to go. That could get him more money and years, but with the risk that if he doesn’t get back to prior efficiency, he gets even less. As a reminder, this is not TJS, but shoulder surgery…

I would be well tempted to get it done.
Don’t see how the Cardinals can afford to trade away both Hence and Hjerpe. At some point they are going to have to develop their own starting pitchers or they are going to have some real financial constraints unless Dewitt and crew are going to up their Major League payroll to around 205-10 million, which is unlikely
I don’t think there was ever any doubt that Clayton Kershaw would remain with the Dodgers. This world we live in is becoming odd enough already…I mean, the great lefty simply wouldn’t look at all normal while standing on the pitcher’s mound wearing a Giant’s uniform.
I’d do that trade….. Hence, Hjerpe, and Honeyman for Cease. It would be hard to give up that much for a pitcher that had a down year in 2023. But we have Thompson, and maybe Liberatore, about ready to join the rotation. At some point Graceffo and McGreevy have to get a chance to show what they’ve got at the major league level. Then, there’s Roby, Bedell, and Rajcic coming along. I think the White Sox would be better for that trade, and I think the Cardinals would be better off as long as Cease is the real deal. It would be tough, though, if Hence and Hjerpe both became top of rotation guys for the White Sox, and if Cease left via free agency after two years. This is all just stating the obvious.
There has been some apprehension about Hence’s future because of his slight build and his listed weight at 185 lbs.
Pedro Martinez was listed at 5’11” and 170 lbs when he came into the game. Knowing that makes it all the more painful to give up Hence. There’s definitely risk for the Cardinals. I’d still do this trade because Cease has his major league learning curve out of the way, and all these prospects we have don’t.You can scratch Zack Wheeler off the 2025 free agent starting pitcher list signs 3 year $126 million extension with the Phillies… that is $42 Million a year
The Wheeler signing seems like an overpay, but at least they have locked up a 1A/1B for the playoffs. `
I’ve said this on another post, but I’d much rather have Montgomery/Thompson than Gibson/Lynn if they gave a crap about actually winning IF they can sneak into the playoffs.With Lynn, Gibson, Carpenter, Crawford…. The Cardinals bowling team should be great this year!!!
Of course Montgomery would look good in the Cardinal rotation but Boras clients rarely sign early. How do you over come that? A massive overpay? Or you ride it out and hope you can sign him at the last second while all of the other pitchers are off the market. That seems risky.

Your goals are much loftier than mine. I can’t see past buyer / seller status at the deadline, and I’m not sure management can either.
If the pen doesn’t sink us, we can rent a SP at the deadline, as we did w/Monty & Q.
STL as sellers at the 2024 deadline, fits the roster and rebuild better. We only acquired one long term contract this winter. We have trade chips galore.
Pham is the best FA outfielder still on the board. Adam Duvall and Michael A.Taylor have signed. Even if an out-of-options outfielder becomes available, he’d need to be an upgrade over Siani.
Snell May be close to signing a pillow contract with the Astros for 3 years, opt outs after the 1st and 2nd year
Pillar is still looking for a team. If Carlson goes IL, Siani and Pillar may be adequate enough until somebody escapes the IL and returns.
One of Rivas, Young or Baker may lose a 40man spot. Maybe Pillar would sign for a Crawford like bench salary.
Scratch that, the CWS signed Pillar back.
Jake Marisnick isn’t opting out of his minors deal, but isn’t expected to make the LAA roster. Possible fringe depth trade.
RH bat to pair up w/lefty Siani. Marisnick logged an 81 ops+ last season in 83 PA’s. Strong spring. Band-aid.

It should be announced that Walker will now be positioned on the RF line, if he isn’t traded to the Chiefs first.
With Walker in RF I wouldn’t be surprised if the right center field gap just became a lot bigger.

I haven’t seen an announcement yet whether he will require an IL stint or not after his crash with Walker yesterday.
Pretty paltry deal for Monty…bet we’re glad we basically paid that for Gibson and Lynn this off-season.
