I think Montgomery will be in the $20 million per year range, not quite $25…

Maybe. Lets see how this opportunity goes for him. I feel like his AAV / yrs are in flux until his season ends.

Duvall might be 35 but he would be on a one year deal and will probably put up better numbers that O’Neill and Carlson combined.

Duvall won’t matter if they don’t get pitching. Don’t think it would be a major move. As for Monty 20 or 25 which I think he will get, I highly doubt he will sing here.

The Cardinals might face trouble recruiting this winter. Its probably not the ‘destination’ it has been.

A 3rd or 4th OF isn’t a major move by definition. No one said it was but he would be an upgrade over what we have especially if we have to move position players for pitching.

The disfunction of this team’s management is on full display. No way would I allow my agent to even listen to St. Louis right now. I’d take less to stay away from the clown show.

The other side of the coin is that any free agent knows the Cardinals have considerable opportunity available. Free agents most want money/years and a chance to play. Despite the terrible 2023 season, St. Louis has a history of being a good place for players to play and most guys who play there like it. I don’t think that will change dramatically unless/until the losing and dysfunction becomes a trend over multiple years.

If they want money and years they more likely to find it somewhere else.

Hey its a free country. But I’m right on this. I’d take the Northsiders money before I’d take the Redbirds money. That team is rising and this team is sinking like a rock to the bottom of the lake. Past success is just that, past. It’s about the present and future and I challenge anyone to tell me why they have faith in this leadership group and franchise based on what they just witnessed. Give me something to grab onto because I’m not seeing it.

Why you should have hope . . .

    1) The Cardinals have one of the best young corp of players in the league.
    2) The Cardinals players are mad that they’ve lost so many games for a winning franchise and are eager to turn it around.
    3) The Cardinals management is suitably eager to turn things around to keep their job.
4). The Cardinals ownership is eager to turn things around to be able to keep selling tickets.
    5) History for the last 20 years says this is a winning team that won’t lose for long.
    6) The Cardinals have both the financial resources and the player capital to make moves.
    7) The Cardinals also continue to be one of the top internal producers of homegrown talent whether their farm system is ranked 1 or 30.
    8) After the first month and a half of terrible defense, extreme bad luck, and some of the worst pitching possible from Hicks, Mikolas, and Flaherty, the Cards then went on to be basically a .500 team despite selling off lots of valuable pieces and replacing them with Lawrence and Barnhart and Fermin and Motter and company.

This is not a bad team. It was 1 1/2 months of horrific baseball and some rough chemistry that just didn’t work. Ownership is good. Our front office is good. Sure they’ve both made some questionable decisions over the past 15 years, but so have all of us. Their track record is still really good. Now I’m not sure about Ollie. I don’t think he’s a bad manager but I fo think he was the wrong guy at the wrong time for the wrong team. So that does give me some trepidation. But there are a lot of other positives out there. And all of those do give me a lot of hope that 2024 will be much better. And in the meantime, I’ll just have to be content with watching Uncle Charlie take one more at bat on replay.

Trevor Bauer’s civil case with the female accuser was settled. “Their settlement called for no exchange of money between the parties”. So there was no criminal conviction and no money paid to settle the civil suit.

Not exactly true. I think the plaintiff did receive a financial payment but it was from insurance instead of Bauer directly. Not sure how all of that works and not sure I want to know. He is a creep.

Yeah, I don’t argue with that, but I think he will get back into MLB now with somebody.

“Tyler O’Neill’s perceived trade value has never been lower, but if there’s a suitor for the oft-injured outfielder, St. Louis will jump on it,” The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey wrote Tuesday.

Despite them being two of the Cards’ biggest power hitters, count me in the crowd for trading O’Neill and Gorman.

It seems like they might have gotten lucky with the Palacios pickup. I was really hoping he’d go to driveline, which already happened. It would be great to see him in Jupiter early for some infield work with Oquendo. Cleveland moved him from 2B to OF after 2021. It would be great to see if he could play as needed at 2B in more of a utility role next year. I’m really curious if he would be better defensively at 2B (or at least better than Donovan) because his fielding metrics in the OF aren’t great.

2B, LF, CF could be some form of rotation between Edman, Donovan, Nootbaar, and Palacios with Edman and Winn also splitting time at SS.

A big question for me is whether they decide to hold on to Carlson in hope for health and the long-awaited breakout or move on from Dylan and trust that Palacios is amid a Nootbaar-esque breakout himself. If he can keep some of the power gains, his batting profile could look like something approaching a lefty swinging Marcus Semien (who also put it all together at a little later of an age) minus the speed and defense.

If the Cardinals sign Yamamoto, and if, maybe, Matsui follows him to ‘da Lou, then if the Cardinals can acquire Gray, Bieber or Glasnow, signing with the Cardinals looks a lot more appealing to any free agent pitcher not yet signed. After all, there’s still Arenado and Goldschmidt and Edman and Contreras, plus the still developing Gorman, Nootbaar, Walker, Winn, Donovan and Burleson on this roster. And, none of the three ‘ifs’ seem like real long shots, IMO.

    Yamamoto/Gray/Glasnow – $25M AAV (maybe you get $20M in YR1, but Glasnow is $25M)

Trying to get two of these would mean over $10M more than they probably have to spend overall. We probably need to earmark $5-10M for the bullpen (*ie Yuki Matsui)

You’re probably looking at this breakdown:
    SP1: One big FA starter, $20-25M for YR1 – Yamamoto/Nola/Montgomery/Glasnow/Imanaga
    SP2: Trade for a Bieber/Quintana/Cease/Pivetta ($8-13M)
SP3: One small FA starter, $10M for YR1 – Lugo/Clevinger/Lorenzen or trade for Freeland

Other options would be gettting a young SP2 like C. Schmidt or B. Garrett or Bryce Miller that doesn’t cost any salary.

Some scenarios in the $40-45M range could be:
    Nola, Quintana, Lorenzen
    Gray, Bieber, Clevinger
    Glasnow, Pivetta, Freeland (salary relief)

One thing to keep in mind is that we would definitely be robbing Peter to pay Paul with trades for Glasnow or Bieber or the young starters and losing a top 45 draft pick to sign Nola or Gray.

We can make up for these signings by trading our surplus. O’Neill will probably get about $5.5M in salary, Edman about $6.2M, and Hudson probably will get $3.7M. All three also have positive trade value. Per BTV, O’Neill has a MTV of 5.5, Edman at 12.7, and Hudson at 2.0. If you traded all three for either one of the trade scenarios above or for a player that hasn’t hit arbitration yet, that would free up an additional $15M.

In a trade for Gasnow the Rays would have to send cash to the Cardinals. ..say $10M. The Cardinals send O’Neill to the Rays who would wind up with a net savings of about $10M.

I hate to think of losing Edman for the obvious reasons, but also because I hate to see GameCard suffer. But Edman would sure fit in well with the Guardians just like he does with the Cardinals.

Regarding Yamamoto, and maybe Matsui, I would only say that Arenado and Nootbaar are not vacationing in Japan. They are on a business trip for the Cardinals’ front office.

Recruiting is great – but we shouldn’t kid ourselves into thinking it will translate into a “hometown discount”. Maybe it can help break a tie if money and years are equal, but otherwise, it is likely no more than interesting reading.

I think the Mets will be all over Yamamoto. If Cohen wants him bad enough they won’t be outbid.

The Rays would either need to pay down Glasnow’s salary or throw in another quality player or two. $25M for one year is a lot to pay for a guy with his injury history.

I don’t think the Cardinals would have to gut the team to get Bieber. He only has one year left on his deal and he had arm trouble this past season. That has to hurt his trade value.

I would not sign more than one player with the QO attached. The Cardinals may never have a draft selection this high again for a long time (we hope) so they need to take advantage of that.

I believe the Cards can sign Imanaga and Gray and trade O’Neill for Bieber. That’s not a dream rotation, but it moves the needle quite a bit. I’d rather have Yamamoto if it’s even remotely feasible, but like the commentators above, I agree that it’s just going to get too expensive to outbid the Mets or Dodgers or Yankees for him. That still gives them some cash to spend on the bullpen and a backup shortstop (if they move Edman to full time CF). That’s all about what I think is going to happen. That improves our rotation, our defense, and doesn’t subtract from our offense unless you count playing Winn most days at SS as subtracting from our offense.

I don’t think an international pitcher with no MLB experience is going to command a huge contract. It’s just to risky. My guess is that he will sign for something like 3 yrs/$50M, maybe less. Then, after he shows what he is worth at the MLB level, he’ll get extended or become a free agent, and get a new contract for whatever the free market says he is worth.
