jager, your reply left me with an unanswered question I hadn’t considered. Which division has tanked the most since their 2020 year end CBA tax totals.

The ALC ended with 668.4mil combined in 2020, and currently have 65% committed to 2021.
The NLC ended with 749.9mil combined in 2020, and currently have 66% committed to 2021.

It’s close enough to call a wash for me, but offseason spending suggests otherwise.

The NLC might have more payroll than the ALC but it is mainly because the NLC has more bloated and untradeable contracts.

    Fowler
    Carpenter
    Miller
    Mikolas
    CMart
    Heyward
    Kimbrel
    Bryant
    Votto
    Moustakas
    Castellanos
All of those guys would be tough to move.

    In the ALC you have:
    Cabrera
    Duffy
    Sal Perez?
    Grandal
    Donaldson?
    Sano?

The NLC teams would love to shed more payroll but they can’t.

Yes GS, that’s the heart of it when we look at the offseason spending to date. The ALC evidently had about 121mil more of payroll flexibility going into the offseason, than the NLC had. The offseason spending shows that.

With both divisions now at about two-thirds of their EOY 2020 payroll, the divisions took different paths to get there. The ALC spent the 121mil they had available. The NLC is sitting on the carry over contracts that were already in place after they have shed what contracts they could.

Very surprised in the level of value that TOR has in, paid for, Matz. Keep waiting to hear that the NYM will be paying a portion of his salary.

While I don’t really want Arenado and his huge contract (I’d give up Gorman and Liberatore both if we could somehow score Matt Chapman though), I sort of want to see a deal happen just for the comedy factor of mspaid’s accidental clairvoyance. Lol

I really hope there are legs to the Rod trade.

Because if not we have missed on some very affordable deals.

Cesar Hernandez today for 5m 1yr and 6m team option

He may have no power but he gets on base plays well on defense and has some speed.

I don’t like Joc. But 1yr 7m? That makes us better.

    Waino and Yadi seem done

Arena do answers a lot of questions as to no movement and even clearing Wong. If it doesn’t work out. Then there is no excuse that the team couldn’t have gotten better for cheap. With the Cj tracts out there.

Still, Arenado puts Edman at 2b and our outfield has less dependence on offensive improvement and defense improves.

    Maybe

Edman played a lot of 3b last year. And Carps position in the lineup was said that he’d have to earn it.

Sosa has legitimate shot at a starting gig at 3b or 3b even.

Until Carp proves he can hit better than .183 he isn’t pushing anyone off any spot

    IMO

What I know for sure is that Arenado trade happens. Edman is playing 2b whether or not Carp is still on the team

Mo has announced multiple times this winter, including as recently as today, that Edman is the second baseman. I have absolutely no reason to doubt him.

Of course, anything could happen in the future, but I would not think the Cards would be motivated to trade a low-cost starter at a thin position – unless the Rockies are in love with Edman.

I’m not trying to be greedy.

But I wonder if there is one more move to be made.

One it put it over the top. And one that could still be done due to not having to unload big prospects.

    Gallo from TEX

Not sure what it takes. Maybe Thompson + Monterey + O’Neill?

Gallo is quality defense. Huge power. Lots of strikeouts. Kind of a better version of O’Neill.

So we trade assets for an upgrade to Oneill.

I dunno but I think there is still room for improvement

Jager, I think a better, simpler move would be to trade Bader plus a pitching prospect for Brandon Nimmo. The Mets are known to want an impact defensive CFer, the Cards could use a left handed bat for the OF and the Mets could always use pitchers.

    Nimmo
    Carlson
    Goldy
    Arenado
    Dejong
    Edman
    Fowler/O’Neill
    Yadi
    Carp if DH

    Not a bad idea 25

I’ve never been a big Nimmo fan but he would probably fit. And would be an upgrade.

I looked at TEX as I’m sure they’d like to save that 6m from Gallo this year. Whereas the Mets seem to be less concerned about saving money right now. Still it’d work as an upgrade.

Mo did say today that they “might not be done” and i don’t think he was referring to Yadi.

I brought it up before but I am all over Gallo. I respect the idea for Nimmo, as the Mets say they want a defensive outfielder, but i have heard more about TEX wanting to move Gallo even if it is just rumors. But i like Gallo even with his strikeouts, because of the Arenado deal. Arenado’s ability to hit for power and average makes me more willing to look for another power source rather than on base guy. Especially with Cesar off the books (and for such a low amount of money). I can handle giving Edman a chance to lead off again and his defense will be just fine.

Gallo is looking to make about 6m…that is totally attainable of an addition since we aren’t paying any of Arenado’s contract this year.

What does TEX want? and an obviously worried Carpenter (playing time is gone now) i’d imagine will accept any deal that gives him a shot to play more, especially from his home state.

I wish they needed a future catcher, but they really don’t…they have Huff and some good veterans holding it done, Knizner i think could have made this easier

Well TEX is rebuilding no doubt, and i’d prefer Solak over Gallo (as he is SUCH a high average guy and can play all over), Gallo’s great defense and his moon shot power is undeniable. To get them to take Carp is not easy though.

I have three ideas…one people aren’t going to like…the other feels better but may be a harder sell and the third is probably even harder a sell on TEX side

    Option 1:
    Carpenter + ONeill + Thompson + Torres

-This doesn’t save TEX money, but gives them young talent for taking on the money, a similar player as Gallo, but cheaper, and a very good looking left SP prospect, and a good OF prospect

    Option 2:
    Carpenter + Carp’s salary + ONeill + Woodford

-save 6mil for TEX, plus replacement type player to Gallo in ONeill but for cheaper, and RP/SP depth piece. For Cardinals it is basically like we would be paying Gallo Carp’s salary + 6mil. It might be a bit expensive, but Gallo is a pretty contributor offensively and defensively. If we could get Gallo production for 25m I think we’d take it, as opposed to what we would get for Carp’s salary and Carp’s production. It’s an expensive addition, but without having to pay Arenado’s contract and what is coming off after 21, it is worth a look

    Option 3: (stay with me)

    Carpenter + Oneill + Woodford
    for
    Gallo + Andrus +10m (deferred to 22 and 23 5mil per)

-for TEX Carpenter can DH and maybe turn it around, and probably won’t vest his option, Oneill is Gallo but cheaper and probably not as good but still upside, Woodford depth and serviceable SP, AND they save 6m for Gallo and 2yrs of Andrus at 14m per (his option for 3rd year becomes PLAYER for Cardinals unfortunately). This makes it cash neutral for TEX in 21 and a minor loss of 5m in 21 and 22. Gallo + Andrus for 2 yrs, is probably around 40mil. this let’s them cash out spending about 25mil over 2yrs. saves them 10mil or so. TEX said they wan Falefa to play SS, and Andrus has been pretty bad recently.
-for STL…it is a big gamble, Andrus would be a bench guy, but his defense is real and speed too, his bat isnt so far removed either. He is an expensive backup, VERY expensive, and probably being with the Cardinals for 3yrs at 14 14 15 is a tough pill to swallow. BUT if you like Gallo long term, and i think we should, it brings a young GG level slugger to the outfield. Also it makes it cash neutral for 21, and with the deferred money from TEX, he turns into a 9m and 10m backup. Still expensive, but could be worse. his defense at SS and speed even if aging is still valuable, and our lack of SS’s ready to play outside of Sosa protects us a bit. With the money coming off the books in 22 i think we could afford this addition even if it provides little but depth back. And more importantly it brings us Gallo, who would put the offense AND defense over the top for this team. not to mention bringing proven youth power protection in case Arenado bolts of Goldy gets old too fast.

I am not saying i prefer the Andrus deal…but i do wonder if Mo and company can work their magic to take advantage of TEX wanting to shed money NOW and later with Gallo and Andrus’s bad contract to bring in Gallo for cheap.

TEX obviously wanting to move ANdrus’ contract any way they can along with their seemingly having Gallo out there for grabs provides an opportunity that I think Mo could utilize to the Cardinals advantage

    ….. that was long…eek

I agree on that Archer move….6.5mil 1yr deal…guy can’t be a worse gamble than our options for 5, and maybe even higher…depth at SP would be nice for the team
i’d like a veteran SP to challenge CMart, Reyes etc at ST…maybe two

There are rotation spots for the taking in STL if a pitcher thinks they are able to snag them. STL ST coudl be pretty competitive and if i was a vet SP I wouldn’t think too hard on taking a ST invite from STL.

The team looks like the favorite in the Central, IE playoffs. The defense is as good as you can get behind you. And there are SP spots for the taking.
