The risk with Lopez is far greater. He’s had one full season (180 IP) in four service years. Makes sense that MIA is highlighting him. Would be good sell high timing for them.
IMO we can’t afford to trade Noot. We are already hoping for better seasons from CF and LF, which disappointed in 2022.
Lopez would just add to an already injury suspect rotation / staff. Lopez makes Matz look like the picture of health. One season out of four is a hard pass for me, but if others want Noot for Lopez, that’s on them.
I don’t think the Cards are looking to trade for Lopez now, anyway. They are surely hoping the staff and prospects sort themselves out one way or another by the trade deadline. The Marlins will still probably be selling pitching at that point if they need it.
stlcard25, I think that is exactly what Mo is thinking.
Acquiring a pitcher now, especially one with injury history, with the idea that we will likely need pitching help by midseason, is questionable since it is unknown if he will still be healthy and pitching at midseason. Waiting until the need arises, and acquiring a pitcher who is healthy and pitching at that time makes sense. It has worked OK the last couple years.
I would rather have Trevor Rogers than Lopez from what I have seen of both pitchers. I think he would flourish here as Montgomery and Quintana did. A fastball changeup mix seems to work in St Louis for lefties and the big difference is he throws harder and his changeup is considered a plus pitch. He had issues with back spasms which I would want to know are behind him first, but I watched him dominate us and lose it do to his defense…like Alcantra struggles with.

This seems likely to me also stl25. Being in the NLC makes a big difference in the Cardinals aggression level. Mo knows that he can coast for the first four months before it is time to get serious. Contending teams in other divisions don’t have that luxury.

I don’t want to trade Noot either but that is who I would ask for if I were the Marlins. I would rate Noot higher than Carlson or O’Neill when salary and length of control are also considered.
It amazes me how high some folks on this forum regard Nootbaar. Here’s a guy that’s a .231 lifetime hitter that really hasn’t done much yet. And yes, I know his ARG is 14.3 and his BAGIF is 2.3. And his fWIT is 11.7. And his wRTR is 3.3.
Moises Gomez has been garnering a lot of attention this past
year, and after reading Blake Newberry’s report on him today, I have to think that the Marlins would want to include him in trade talks. The there’s Ivan Herrera who has the enthusiasm and drive that every organization wants to see in a player. There’s no doubt that the Cardinals have players that could improve the Marlins, and the Marlins have pitching that could be helpful to the Cardinals. If the Cardinals can get the pitcher that they want from the Marlins, I’d say they should go for it. BTW, when things are this quiet, except for a shred of a rumor now and then regarding the tight-lipped Cardinals, that usually means something is cooking.I like the Nootz okay, but I completely understand what you’re driving at, Rats. I place the Nootzter in the same category as guys like Rex Hudler, Joe McEwing and Bo Hart. For whatever reason these types of players quickly endear themselves to fans and become favorites without featuring what could be termed anything close to a nice performance over a season or two. I’m susceptible to the oddity myself. The reason may be a simple case of the player performing way above what are initially quite low expectations. At any rate, how can you not like a guy who looks precisely like a young Wayne “Nooton” and always busts it out of the box and down the line?…Haha!
It’s not just folks on this forum Rats, it’s MLB teams too. OAK and TOR both priced their catchers with Nootbaar as their headliner asking price. STL declined, so there’s 3 teams right there that understand his XYZ value.
Rat, you forgot OPS. In 2022 the Cardinals top 4 OPS were Goldschmidt, Pujols, Arenado and Nootbaar. Same for OPS+ and same for SLG. Pretty good company. He also tied for 4th in HRs even though he only appeared in 108 games. Noot the Beast.

Rats, you make fun of posters who look beyond just batting average to judge a player but you also wanted to sign Bellinger. His batting average for the last 3 years totaling 1143 plate appearances is only .203.
The Nootzter collected 347 PA’s in ’22. Over or under in ’23?
I think it’s a pretty easy over on that. I’d expect him to get 400ish even if he’s not hitting well. His glove has some value regardless. Anyway, I’d peg him for a little over average with the stick (around a 110 OPS+).
Back to pitching. It’s my understanding there are going to be some really good starting pitchers that will be free agents AFTER the 2023 season.
