Reynolds is not gonna be a Cardinal folks, >0.0000001%.

I didn’t say he would be. I said I would like for him to be. Mo doesn’t return my messages though.

I am not opposed to getting an ace but it is apparent that the Cardinals do not want big long term contracts in the rotation therefore we should load up with high end position players. We should learn to accept that reality.

I would also say that in our recent history the reason we seem to get knocked out of the playoffs has been our lack of offense, not a lack of good starting pitching.

Yet the last two times we won we did have an ace.

Oliver is spot on, the Carpenter brilliance in game 5 vs the Phillies made 2011 possible. Many forget that.

We also had a stacked lineup that didn’t hibernate in the postseason.

It looks we had guys coming through in the clutch during those series, unlike 2022.

Lance Berkman was the most consistent and probably the most productive hitter throughout the entire 2011 post-season. I also often use Molina’s team leading total of 9 RBI’s in the ’11 WS as a trivia question. It’s always been a genuine stumper for even die hard Redbird fans. Man alive, what a season that was, eh?

Without Carpenter’s 5th game gem they don’t move on. They scored only one run.

In the 2022 postseason the Cardinal offense put up a slash line of .185/.254/.246/.500 but yeah the lack of an ace is why we lost.

Like I said before 2006 (really bad team but had an ace) and 2011 last two rings we had an ace. Since then good teams on and off but nothing to show for.

They don’t move on without that run either. You can thank Skippy for that 1st inning RBI double to push Furcal across HP.

Of course they don’t but Carpenter made it stand up.

There is nothing wrong with having an ace but you have to score some runs too.

Speaking of aces, when is the last time the Cardinals went out on the marketplace and spent big on an ace whether it be in free agency or trade? The big ace we had in 2006 and 2011 was Chris Carpenter. How did we get him? Big free agent contract? Blockbuster trade? Nope and Nope. The Cardinals got him off the scrap heap for $300k after the Blue Jays let him go.

So where is this next ace coming from? The ace free agents are signed so it will have to come from a trade. Will the Cardinals meet the asking price for someone like Bieber? I doubt it. Someone more possible would be Pablo Lopez. He probably isn’t a true ace but he would most likely be the best starter on our staff.

He sure did. And that was after lasting only 3 IP’ed in his other GS in game #2 of that ’11 NLDS. Nice rebound by Carpenter, eh?

I agree with this, but the offense was adequate enough and probably will be good this year as well. Good pitching will tend to stifle offense at times anyway. Yet…man for man, the pitching staff simply didn’t match the staffs we would have faced as we advanced in October.

That is probably true but we will never know for sure. Regardless, I will ask again where is this ace coming from? I don’t see the Cardinals spending big on free agent types. Mo goes for the Leake and Matz types. Do we have the prospects to trade for an ace? Yes we do but will we really pull the trigger or just go with what we have and hope that Liberatore, Graceffo, and Hence turn into top of the rotation starters someday?

“Will we really pull the trigger?”

Nope. The trend is buy pitching at a discount, at the deadline, when 60% of that players salary has already been paid for the season.

But what about Matz? That ain’t no ace. He’s getting reliever money to be a back end SP.

Matz is shaping up to be a $44M mistake. Hopefully we can salvage enough innings out of him to be deemed a decent number 5 starter. If so, I will be pleasantly surprised.

One year doesn’t mean Matz is “shaping up” to be anything. There’s literally 0 evidence that his deal is a great one or a bust at this point, and to suggest otherwise is to express a bias to one side or the other.

He’s been worth 0.7 fWAR so far. At market value, he could do the exact same for three more years and be worth probably $25-30M on the market. I’ll take the easy over there and guess it will be at least a neutral value deal. That doesn’t make it a bust. Certainly it looks to be far from the Cecil, Fowler or Holland deals.

I freely admit that I was aghast at the Matz signing from day one and still feel that way. We all have our weird obsessions on this board. Some obsess over Woodford, Burleson, or Marmol. I guess mine is Matz..lol

And I will gladly eat crow if he it outperforms my expectations.

Technically top of the rotation implies top half. That would mean a top sixty pitcher league wide. I believe Miles, Waino, and Monty all fall into that category last year. Flaherty has that potential if healthy.
The lack of a 40 million dollar a year arm is the team’s greatest void and conversely is what allows the team to develop young arms.

I like to poke fun at Johnny and Billy Jr. only because I find them both to be amusing. However, if they ever start paying a pitcher $40 MM per, they won’t be so funny anymore…

A year doesn’t but a shoulder impingement and a torn MCL does. We will have to see how the shoulder and knee hold up, and whether any compensating for either or both causes a problem elsewhere. That risk level, which did not exist when we signed him for $44M, now will exist for the duration of the contract.
