Hadn’t heard that about Lindor, but my general view is that arbitrary deadlines are artificial.

I think Alex Wood would be a heck of a signing, he’s a lefty. He’s easily a top 3 starter if fully healthy, and a #2 on the Cards. If need be, he could be a great BP addition.

$8M/1yr with a boatload of incentives?

I would think the Kim signing would negate the need for someone like Wood unless they are planning to trade CMart.

Give me Corey Dickerson and Brad Hand and let’s go win the division again.

I feel like after the last couple of years, we can never have too much good pitching. But in general, I agree with you. A LH bat for the OF who won’t block Carlson and some kind of closer candidate puts us right at the front of the Central in 2020. I still like Edwin Diaz, although the Mets signing Betances shows they may be trying to put a good bullpen out there next year.

I like Diaz too but Hand seems like more of a sure thing. While there have been no public reports that Cleveland has any interest in moving Hand I would still make the call. I mean they have moved Kluber and supposedly willing to listen to offers on Lindor. Who is to say they wouldn’t also listen to offers on Hand?

The Indians are in a tricky position. They seem to want to trim payroll but still compete at the same time. They can probably pull it off considering the state of the ALC. The Twins have lost quite a bit of talent from last year but still figure to be tough, the White Sox are trending up but are they really ready to contend and the Royals and Tigers figure to still be bottom feeders.

Is anyone else willing to join me on the Alex Wood bandwagon? I’m currently recruiting diligently!!

As long as he is healthy, I’ve advocated signing Wood for several months. As they say, you can never have enough pitching. His career numbers say he is due for a bounce back year.

Wow. The Twins have reportedly offered Josh Donaldson four years – at age 34. Hard to see how that would end well, but they are in a winnable division. They keep adding old guys, most recently Rich Hill and Homer Bailey, probably hoping some will come through…

We just signed Kim. Why do we need Alex Wood? They are basically the same pitcher.

If there is any money left in the budget (which there apparently isn’t) let’s get a LH OF or a lockdown closer.

    31-year old left-handed hitting outfielder.

    GScott…. really?

It disturbs and befuddles me when you folks defend Dewitt’s “budget”. Are you concerned about him growing his networth $220M vs $200? You post good stuff typically but so many fans are so ignorant complaining about player salaries when it’s the owners still making the biggest $$.

Why spend a lot of time arguing about what the owners “could” do? They all could spend millions more, but they aren’t – and it won’t change even if we complain.

The Cardinals have said their budget will be around what they spent last year. We all know that, don’t we?

I don’t see anyone defending it. It is just stating reality.

P.S. I do still expect them to add a veteran reliever and maybe a veteran LHH outfielder and a catcher, too. Probably closer to spring when prices go down. The players will cost something and I imagine the team will find a way to pay them. None would be prohibitively expensive.

To the point made, Alex Wood was paid just under $10 MM last year under arbitration. I don’t know what his current value is, but assume it is the same. If I was the Cardinals and could spend $10 MM more on one player, I would get more help for the offense long before adding yet another starting pitcher, especially now that Kim was signed.

You may see the team’s priority differently, though… If so, maybe if you could help explain?

Chitown, I am not defending the Cardinal budget, however when management states they plan to keep payroll about the same as 2019 then I am assuming that is going to be the case. 2019 payroll ended around $160M and they are currently at $164M so why would anyone think there will be much more spending this winter? There are numerous trades and free agent signings that I would like to see happen but I usually refrain from throwing them out there because I know there is zero chance of them happening.

If it were up to me the Cardinal payroll would be around $200M but it isn’t up to me nor have I received any phone calls from them. Until then I will live in reality.

This thread doesn’t have to deal with “reality” as anyone sees it.

People should not be reprimanded or guilted into not discussing any idea here.

If you want to talk about crazy or perceived crazy ideas go for it!

The FO has always said they are willing to add or raise payroll for the right guys if the opportunity comes up.

Stanton shouldn’t have been an option with his salary and years and given the payroll obligations and budget talking points at the time. Yet we had agreed to a deal and only Stanton himself stopped it from happening.

On top of that. The FO is still vocally interested in Ozuna who won’t take a super cheap contract. At very least 15m over extended years. Or a lot more on shorter deal. Regardless. Even if we assume 15m + at least 5m or so for Wieters or similar. Add in a veteran RP for 2.5m minimum.

And the fact we are already 4m over last years money which they said was what we were going to have a similar budget too and you can easily see that that statement was not really accurate.

We’d be at 166.5m at the minimum which is a solid 26m over what last year was meaning that statement should not be taken as gospel by any stretch.

This doesn’t even factor into an extension to Jack which must be in the works.

At the end of the day statements from the FO are great to have and give a sense of their intentions but they are absolutely not gospel or fact. And definitely shouldn’t be used to dissuade or guilt people from posting thoughts on acquisitions or payroll adding maneuvers big or small.

Ozuna back could very well happen. Has to be a good deal but they obviously like him enough.

Arenado seems unlikely but he’s the type of guy you deal big prospects for and raise your payroll to acquire.

Arenado for Gorman Bader Thompson Edman Genesis Woodford/Ponce

I’d also be curious if they’d want to move A few or one of their relievers contracts. Maybe even Blackmon too.

If we’d be willing to take on some contracts Arenado price could come down. It’s risky but we could push the luxury line for a few years and compete with an older team.

People should be free to put out crazy ideas, they just shouldn’t be offended when other people treat them as crazy ideas.

As far as I am concerned there isn’t a prohibition for people throwing their ideas out there on this thread. I don’t recall Brian or anyone ever deleting anyone’s posts.

However, history tells us that the Cardinals increase their payroll incrementally. If 2020 happens to be the year where it magically takes a sharp spike then yay for us but I don’t see it happening.

I also find it comical that I am accused of defending the Cardinals payroll. I am not sure where that is coming from. I am the guy who routinely used to complain that we didn’t spend as much as the Cubs.

I was merely reciting what team management has said repeatedly but some just refuse to accept what they say.

I would make that trade except keep Edman and include Carpenter, Fowler and Cecil in the deal. Eight for one. Sweet.

GScott, that wasn’t directly toward you, just a response to the comment. I feel that often times people (not just on here) act like there is no money left and Dewitt might be eating Ramen Noodles every night if they add to the payroll. His $160 number is nonsense, and you would think with the division completely up for grabs, this would be a good year to be less conservative.

Come now, we all know that you are the temperate one here. Always wanting to do just a little less than the Cubs do. 😉😂😂😂
