Ken Rosenthal is stirring the Arenado pot with little to go on other than a rumor that Texas asked the Rockies about him. He adds on his own that if Colorado is serious, the Cards, Dodgers, Braves and Nats would be other “possible landing spots”.
Rosenthal readily admits he wrote a similar article last September.
I predict this will be turned into much more by anxious fans during a time when real news is scarce, but it fits perfectly on this thread.
Rosenthal estimates if the Rockies pay $38 million of Arenado’s salary, they could get two good prospects back in trade. Would you do it and if so, who?
A trade of Nolan Arenado no longer seems like a preposterous idea. Story: https://t.co/YlDteldjwV #Rockies

December 19, 2019 at 6:48 pm #117174If the definition of “good” is Carlson and Gorman, then I wouldn’t consider it. Gorman would become expendable with Arenado being added and Goldy Locke’s into first though so he’s on the table.
If the Rockies ate $38, took him on Carp and the Cards gave up Gorman, Bader and Montero and their comp pick this year, I would do it, but there are likely better offers out there for them.
December 19, 2019 at 7:57 pm #117177No way the Rocks could justify to themselves or their fans the immediate eating of 38 million in salary.
December 19, 2019 at 9:36 pm #117183I think Arenado will get traded, and the return will be less than expected. I’m guessing that the Rockies want nothing to do with paying him $35M for 2020, or any year thereafter. I think all they were trying to do when they signed him was get a return better than a supplemental pick. Just my opinion. Also, the Cardinals aren’t going to crash their budget by taking on a contract like Arenado’s. Besides, they think they can win without him.
December 20, 2019 at 9:21 am #117193The Rockies would be sending a strange message to their fans and to future free agents if they trade Arenado only one year after signing his big deal. Not to mention the fact that the return should be diminished some by his opt out clause after 2021. I just don’t see it happening.
But if they do trade him I would peg the likelihood of the Cards getting him at less than 1%.
December 20, 2019 at 9:40 am #117194Even if the Rockies trade Arenado after one year, it’s still not a bad deal for either the Rockies or Arenado himself. The Rockies will very likely get something better than a supplemental pick while never paying him that $35M even for one year. Arenado gets a big contract one year earlier than he would have, had he waited for his free agency, so he didn’t have to worry about getting injured in that last year before his free agency. IMO, this is a creative idea where both sides win. The risk is that if the Rockies can’t trade Arenado, which seems extremely unlikely, they are stuck with his contract.
December 20, 2019 at 10:19 am #117198I can think of far worse things to happen than to be “stuck with the contract” of arguably the best third baseman in MLB. The Rockies don’t have to do anything and probably won’t, unless they get a crazy offer.
December 20, 2019 at 11:41 am #117203I admit that I have a hard time believing that any mid-market team would want to carry a player getting paid $35M which is about 20% of the Rockies’ entire payroll.
December 20, 2019 at 12:04 pm #117205It is an interesting theory that they signed Arenado so they could trade him. If that was their plan all along, why did they give Arenado all the power with full no-trade protection?
December 20, 2019 at 12:30 pm #117207Because they had to, I guess. No trade protection is standard procedure nowadays. Players expect it. But it’s pretty unusual for no trade protection to hold up a trade. Votto, and recently, Darvish are exceptions. It’s a theory. But it’s something that could become commonplace. The player gets his mega contract a year earlier, and the team gets something better than a supplemental pick. The risk is that a team could get stuck with a contract that would tie them up if they had it but really couldn’t afford it.
December 20, 2019 at 12:37 pm #117209OK, but those were not the only choices. The Rockies could have just traded him a year or two before free agency and got a lot more in return than a draft pick with no residual risk of getting stuck paying $35 MM per year. I guess we will see…
December 20, 2019 at 12:38 pm #117210As I predicted, Twitter has lost its collective mind. Here is one that is really out there. Trading seven players plus taking on the $35 MM salary, offset only by Carpenter and six inexpensive salaries. Assuming the Rockies could clear four 40-man roster spots, they couldn’t make this trade fast enough.
I thank God that fans can’t run the team or the Cardinals would soon be out of business.
P.S. I voted in this poll just so I could see the results to date. The “no” is only ahead 53-47%. Holy smokes! I guess people are really getting into the spirit of giving!
Would you trade Matt Carpenter, Nolan Gorman, Tommy Edman, Ryan Helsley, Zack Thompson, Genesis Cabrera, and Tyler O'Neill for Nolan Arenado? #STLCards

December 20, 2019 at 1:19 pm #117213mud, thanks for bringing up that idea. It made me think. Here are a couple of more thoughts.
In addition to the NTC, the Rockies hurt his trade value by giving him the post-2021 out. An acquiring team (that would be wiling to pay his salary) will offer less in trade because they don’t know if he will stay more than two years.
Also, if Rosenthal’s theory is correct, the Rockies would have to cover $38 MM of his salary just to get two good prospects in return. My take is that they could have traded him a year ago and gotten two good prospects without having to eat $38 MM.
It just seems to me that they just made things tougher by signing him if they did not intend to pay him.

stlcard25ParticipantThe “no” vote is now up near 60%. I voted no, and I’m not sure I want Arenado anyway. His home/road splits are scary.
December 20, 2019 at 4:35 pm #117216Here is an article by Richard Justice on MLB.com on Corey Dickerson saying the Cardinals are 1 of 3 favorites for him.
https://www.mlb.com/news/corey-dickerson-underrated-free-agentDecember 20, 2019 at 4:46 pm #117217Dickerson would be great fit for the Cardinals. He would be a nice LH compliment to all of our young RH OF’s and would come at a relatively modest price.
December 20, 2019 at 5:39 pm #117220Thanks for sharing the link. Just to be clear though, the author deduces that Dickerson would be “a nice fit” on the Cardinals. So they are only one of the favorites – in his opinion. There is no rumor the team has expressed any interest. Pretty much what some of us have said here for weeks.
December 20, 2019 at 6:06 pm #117223Imo the Cardinals will have to make a decision on whether Justin Williams can help at the MLB level and that will determine whether they pursue an LH bat on the free-agent market. Also, it remains to be seen whether the Cardinals trade Jose Martinez. Maybe they can trade Martinez for an LH hitting outfielder that can actually play defense.
December 23, 2019 at 4:29 pm #117477Nice click bait title here. In fact, there is no new news and no confirmed talks between the two teams. The story does make that clear.

December 23, 2019 at 5:14 pm #117483By the start of the next season we will probably be reportedly interested in every available player in the entire MLB…wouldn’t mind Arenado as long as we didn’t have to give up to much or pay to much…
December 23, 2019 at 6:03 pm #117489This is interesting. Would take away a guy the Cubs may want back and remove one potential landing spot for Ozuna.
Source: #WhiteSox remain interested in Nicholas Castellanos, following their signing of Dallas Keuchel. Their current payroll obligation is around $100 million for 2020, with room to possibly increase further. @MLB @MLBNetwork

I’ve also read speculation that the agents for Ozuna and Castellanos are each waiting for the other to sign so they can try to get a better deal than the other.
December 24, 2019 at 8:27 am #117510I would love to see the Sox steal one from the Cubs. If big brother isn’t careful the little brother is going to become the best team in Chicago.
December 24, 2019 at 9:09 am #117516Brian, you mentioned a few days ago that the Cards might look to add a Bud Norris type for the bullpen. Could this be the guy?

December 24, 2019 at 11:35 am #117522Kole Calhoun will make $6M in 2020, $8M in 2021. The deal includes a $9M club option for 2022 with a $2M buyout. That's a two-year, $16 million guarantee from the Diamondbacks.
