ParticipantMy whole point of trading DeJong was because we have two guys that can play SS and a 3B and a 2B that are locked in for the most part.
Trading DeJong for someone like Lindor is just spinning the wheels
September 22, 2019 at 11:34 am #107807I’d like to see Edman get a start at SS in this last stretch of games. Despite SS being his natural position, he has played 0 innings there with St. Louis this year. (In AAA this year, Edman started 25 games at 2B, 9 at 3B, 9 at SS, and 2 in CF.)
I’m glad to see DeJong get his wRC+ back to 100 (league average) after yesterday’s HR, but Edman’s now up to 113 (13% above league average). Though, by DRC+ they are an identical 104 (4% above league average).
A 2020 infield of 2B Wong, SS DeJong, and 3B Carpenter, with Edman playing most days between all three positions seems like a good idea to me. I would prefer to keep the depth (injuries happen) and play the matchups when everyone’s healthy. And if Carpenter gets off to a poor start again, just slot Edman in as the regular at 3B.
Sure it’s early, but I think one thing to watch in spring training next year is how much time Edman gets at SS.
September 22, 2019 at 12:08 pm #107812Tommy Edman needs to be in the line-up every day and I don’t care where it is.

Even though Lindor is a much better player? It seems like a lack of consistent offense has been a bigger issue this year than most anything else. Think Dejong could fetch a controllable and good starter?
September 22, 2019 at 6:17 pm #107918DeJong isn’t going anywhere.
September 22, 2019 at 6:53 pm #107922Lindor is a better contact hitter, has as much or more power, a better OBP, more consistent hitter and has won a gold glove in the past. Oh, and he is about 3 months younger than DeJong. He is considered one of the best shortstops in the game, if not THE best shortstop. It would be good to acquire him.
September 22, 2019 at 7:24 pm #107931Kean Wong has be DFAed by the Rays. As per Trade Rumors:
“Wong, 24, is also a left-handed hitting second baseman. …… . .he’s been productive in the high minors for quite some time, seemingly a victim of the Rays’ crowded infield mix. He got his first big league call this September after slashing .307/.375/.464 in 506 plate appearances in his third season with Triple-A Durham. Wong, the younger brother of Cardinals’ second baseman Kolten Wong, comes with a clean slate of team control and option seasons. Between that roster flexibility, his defensive profile and high-minors offensive track record, it would be surprising if another organization with a little more uncertainty in the infield didn’t take a flier on him on the waiver wire.Could the Cards use TWO Wongs at 2B………….LOL
September 22, 2019 at 7:27 pm #107932DeJong has a 4.0 WAR and has an extremely team-friendly contract 6 yrs 26M plus two club option years thru 2025.
Lindor has a 5.1 WAR and is a free agent in 2022 and he will be expensive.
Like a said before DeJong isn’t going anywhere.September 22, 2019 at 9:43 pm #107942I’m as excited as, if not more so than any Cards fan due to my proximity to Wrigley. I have roughly 5% Cards fan friends, 10% SOX, 5% other and the rest, Cubbies. I’ve had several ask if I think the Cards have a chance to win it all or go to the series in the last 24 hours.
My answer is 100% no, the Cards have a boatload of “good players” and two great players in Wong and Flaherty.
If anyone wouldn’t trade DeJong for 2 years of Lindor they are suffering from the “Dewitt/Mo groupthink syndrome”…. maybe make the playoffs, have 3.4M people show up and take home 80m at the end of the year.
September 22, 2019 at 9:56 pm #107943I would love to have Lindor here at SS. But I agree completely with Game Card. DeJong isn’t going anywhere. He’s pretty good defensively, he’s adequate with the bat, and he’s got a relatively cheap contract. Also, I don’t see Edman as a backup at SS. I don’t like Munoz at SS either. If Sosa has a good spring, then maybe he should finally get a chance to show what he can do at the major league level.
If they have to trade an outfielder to thin out the competition, I think they should get a high ceiling pitching prospect, or two.
September 22, 2019 at 10:17 pm #107945IMO if DeJong got injured Edman would be the everyday SS.
September 22, 2019 at 11:08 pm #107949I agree that DeJong isn’t going anywhere. However, I would trade him in a heartbeat for Lindor.
I have no problem with Edman backing up at SS.
September 22, 2019 at 11:33 pm #107950By the way, DeJong has the best fielding Pct. for any SS in baseball with a .098. Lindor is 6th with a .979.
September 23, 2019 at 7:02 am #107954CMart has to be traded, his value is still high, but could quickly be a negative. The shoulder history along with complete lack of work ethic, when combined means they need to sell high. The Padres need a potential top starter to go with their up and comers.
Cards Get: Kirby Yates, Luis Patino, 20 y/O RHSP (31 on MLB, 27 Fangraphs) and Adrian Morejon 21 y/o LHP (no longer top 100 on either list).
Cardinals give up CMart, Ponce and Arozarena.
Yates for a year bridges the gap to the youngsters gaining experience and Hicks coming back. Patino would become the top 1, 2 or 3 prospect in the system and Morejon would be 4th.
The Cardinals would then need to sign or trade for a proven #2 LHSP (Boyd, Miley, MadBum, Hamels type).

stlcard25ParticipantIf I’m trading Carlos, I want him in the AL where he can do the least possible damage. If the shoulder is healthy (and he’s been pitching so much that I can’t imagine how it’s not) then he should be used in the rotation for us. All those other options for our #2/3 spot are either more expensive or are not as good than Carlos has been in his career. Trading proven starters for prospects is such a crap shoot. It makes me nervous if we hope to contend again next year.
That said, the Padres scenario is an ok return. I’d almost rather include O’Neill than Arozarena in a trade now, but it might be a coin flip who will become the better player.
September 23, 2019 at 9:49 am #107992
stlcard25ParticipantThe White Sox have long been known to covet Carlos. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind slotting him into their rotation if he’s looking healthy next year. Do they have pieces that could work in a trade? I’d assume Robert is off the table…Kopech might be a fit but he’s coming off TJ. Madrigal is a good MI hitting prospect. Dylan Cease? I’m not an expert there but maybe the Sox could work.
Or maybe the Red Sox? Their pitching staff wasn’t great this year. I’d send them Carlos and Fowler for a year of Mookie Betts. Ha ha
September 23, 2019 at 10:03 am #107996DeJong .980
September 23, 2019 at 11:48 am #108014I would not actively look to trade CMart. If he returns close to being the starting pitcher he was before the last 2 seasons it would fill a major need, and I think his current role devalues his worth. And if he returns to being a solid 2, or 2A, he could be a valuable trade chip before the 2020 deadline. By then possibly Oviedo, Rondon, Woodford or even forgotten man, Reyes may be ready, although the latter most all of us have written off.
September 23, 2019 at 11:52 am #108015
stlcard25ParticipantAgreed. C27. I was just “spitballing” some ideas as CFICT was throwing them out. As we learned this year, rotation depth never hurts you.
As of now, we might have Flaherty, Mikolas, Hudson, Waino, Cmart, Reyes, Gomber, Ponce and Helsley in line as possible starters. Many of them are question marks. I’d peg a Cmart for 180 IP of low-mid 3s ERA if healthy, which would be huge for the rotation.
September 23, 2019 at 3:35 pm #108032Regarding CMart, I 100% agree he COULD be a great #2 or even #1 starter, but there is a much better chance that he parties all offseason (not just an assumption), and season for that matter, and ends up being either in the bullpen or worse.
The point is, it’s not a risk that’s even close to worth taking when you can turn him into something very valuable right now.
The idea of Yates (replaces CMarts role this year) and the two very good prospects and save roughly $6M for 2020 that can be used to offset part of the signing of a 1A/#2 starter.
To get that package it might take CMart, Ponce, Arozarena and possibly another piece, but the Cards have plenty left in those areas to cover the loss. And it would gain two extra 40 man spots.
September 23, 2019 at 4:29 pm #108040I would look into a deal with Cleveland.
CMart and JMart to the Indians for Brad Hand and a top 20 prospect. At one time I was interested in Kluber but the injuries seem to be piling up with him. He would be risky.
September 23, 2019 at 4:37 pm #108045I wouldn’t trade Carlos as long as Hicks is out.
September 23, 2019 at 5:27 pm #108058After watching what happened to Kimbrel and the Cubs over the weekend, I think it’s practically insane to trade CMart with no proven reliever to replace him. He has been one of the best closers in the games after he got off the IL.
I don’t like his antics, either. I think the kind of stuff he does appeals to the 6 to 9 age crowd (i.e. First, Second, and Third graders). I bet they think it’s funny and fun. Beyond that age group, I doubt that there’s much appreciation of his antics. But when he gets out of the 9th with a save, much more often than not, IMO you have to tolerate the other stuff.
September 23, 2019 at 5:36 pm #108061My feelings toward CMart needing to be traded have less than zero to do with his in the stadium antics, it has 100% to do with his off field lifestyle.
Also, in the trade I suggested which is more than reasonable and would likely be accepted with a tweak or two, the Cards are getting 1 year of Kirby Yates to close until Hicks comes back and the young fireballers get another year of experience, as well as two extremely good pitching prospects. If Yates does what he has this year, a QO wouldn’t be 100% out of the question either.
September 23, 2019 at 5:48 pm #108064As long as Yadi is catching and can babysit Carlos we should keep him.
