I think a fair return for CMart would require a top 30 prospect and a 50-100 prospect minimum.

<Are there any realistic trade targets out there for an ace for a team in need of 2 or 3 MLB ready OF’s?>Well me put on my thinking cap. I kind of like the letter L and L stands for a lot of stuff but when doubled it stands for Lance Lynn who has made himself proud this season. But – can he patch it up with Mo for letting him go? Wait – he did have a QO did he not? Oh well, I answered your question I hope.

August 30, 2019 at 9:26 am #104343You could package CMart and a plethora of our young OF’s not named Carlson to Cleveland for Kluber and Hand.

stlcard25ParticipantI honestly believe that Kluber is toast. A trade for him is like a trade for 2015-16 Waino. Hand would be a good acquisition, but not at the cost of Cmart and an OF.
August 30, 2019 at 9:51 am #104350I will grant you that Kluber is unlikely to ever revisit his 2016 days but I think he could still be a reliable innings eater if he comes back healthy, which is more than we can say for CMart presently. Hand would be the major target there. He would give us a very envious bullpen.
August 30, 2019 at 2:10 pm #104370Part of the problem that I see with Kluber is that after a team acquires him, that team has to pay him $17.5M, and if they want him back for another year, it costs another $18M. The Cardinals budget couldn’t hold that if they’re going to extend Ozuna.

But they may not extend Ozuna and dealing CMart and his salary would make Kluber affordable.
August 30, 2019 at 8:11 pm #104397Cleveland wants to reduce payroll, so I don’t see them being a good fit with him. Hand and Kluber are definitely targets, but I doubt that included CMart.
They are very light in the OF though, so several of the Cards AAA guys could be packaged together?

ParticipantThis is very convincing… Gallego has helped the bullpen tremendously.

August 31, 2019 at 8:01 am #104439Marcell will be seeing a very nice contract coming his way this off season. He did what he had to do to earn it in his contract year, like so many have done before him. With the bumper crop of outfielders this team has popping up, coupled with glaring needs elsewhere, how can this team extend him a serious offer?
Would love to get Kluber. If that occurs, we could own one of the highest paid #5 starters in baseball in Mr. Mikolas.

They would be reducing payroll. CMart will cost less than Kluber.
I am not opposed to keeping CMart in St. Louis next year if he is in the rotation but if we are looking to move some money in order to bolster the team overall he would be a good change of scenery candidate.
August 31, 2019 at 12:59 pm #104494MM3, I 1000% like the idea of Lance Lynn coming back, and I don’t think they left on bad blood? However, I don’t agree that he fills the “ace” roll. Chris Carpenter vs Roy Halladay in game 5, early Oct 2011…. that’s the kind of ace that they need that will make the current team into legitimate contender for the WS. Just based on looking at the Rangers 2019 stats, an OF or two, and a MI could definitely help the Rangers long term.
I would love for Lane Thomas to be the 4th OF next year, he comes in off the bench and just hits. O’neill, Bader and Fowler would be the best bet to be the starting OF in 2020 with Carlson being called up mid/late year.
Would Adolis Garcia, Jose Martinez, Shrock and an Elledge level type prospect get him? That still leaves CMart, Randy A., Justin Williams, Sosa, etc as trade bait…
August 31, 2019 at 1:13 pm #104500Going back to the Rangers, I’m always clamoring for the Cards to get a lefty for the rotation, and the Rangers happen to have Mike Minor, with only a year left on his deal at less than $10M going into his age 32 season. They could target him, but would likely have to give up more in prospects than they would for Lynn after the year Minor has had.
Doubtful Mo finds an “opportunistic” deal there, but he’d be a great piece for the rotation.
August 31, 2019 at 5:04 pm #104580Wonder what terms/money Cole will get. 7 years/$180 mill? I am sure it will be out of our price range, with a trade for a Kluber type more likely.
August 31, 2019 at 5:10 pm #104582It will be interesting to see the closer in 2020. CMart along with Helsley hopefully will be back to starting. Perhaps Gallegos? Fernandez certainly has the stuff to be one.
August 31, 2019 at 6:13 pm #104585C27, Gallegos is David Robertson 2.0! When all is said and done, he will be the leader in the saves category for the St. Louis Cardinals baseball organization.
DeWallet lucked out on this one! Helsley is hopefully the #6 starter after they add a couple. AND…… CMart will be pitchin, drinkin, smokin, and eatin for another organization.
September 2, 2019 at 10:36 am #104789How about getting Marquez from the Rockies? I doubt they’d have reason to move him, but I’ve always liked his stuff.

stlcard25ParticipantWonder what terms/money Cole will get. 7 years/$180 mill? I am sure it will be out of our price range,
Maybe $50M more than that over the same time frame, which isn’t really out of our price range. It’s unlikely that they’ll pony up, but IMO they should. Cole looks a lot like the next Scherzer.
September 2, 2019 at 10:07 pm #104893My guess is Cole will get 7/217 from….. the Yankees. They have been struggling to find top notch starters and I just can’t imagine them missing out on him. They have some payroll flexibility finally and can outbid even the Red Sox and Dodgers anytime they want, if they so choose, and some of their guys making money have positive trade value if it needs to be offset.
What can they give the Cards for CMart is the better question for Cards fans?
September 3, 2019 at 1:04 am #104898To me, there is no question CMart should be a starter in 2020. And also he needs to prove his durability. His current value, is that of a closer. I think we should keep all options open, and see where we are at the 2020 trade deadline. as we don’t know who our 2020 closer is, at least until, and if Hicks comes back.
September 3, 2019 at 7:00 am #104903
stlcard25ParticipantI’m sure the Yankees will be after Cole, as they need a starter. I am not sure they will get him if the numbers aren’t well above the pack, a la David Price. I’m thinking he gets 7/$230M or 8/$250M, something like that. It will be a risk for whomever signs him, for sure.
I’d still like to see the Cards make a real run at him. The rotation could be very good with Cole, Flaherty, Hudson, Cmart, and Mikolas. Even without Cmart you could give Waino a final go or perhaps you finally get a healthy year from Reyes or Gomber. That’s a good rotation, and potentially a great one.
September 3, 2019 at 9:32 am #104918I would like to see the Cardinals sign Cole, trade CMart, re-sign Waino and use Fernandez as the closer.
September 3, 2019 at 9:39 am #104919I will say Cole signs with the Angels for 6 years $200M.
As for CMart I would only trade him for a big return. Otherwise stick him in the rotation and hope for a quality 175-200 innings. He needs to have a good offseason and do what the front office advises him to do.
September 3, 2019 at 10:16 am #104924
stlcard25ParticipantI’ll preliminarily say Cole to the Cards for 8 years and $255M. Cmart goes to the Astros for three non-Whitley/Tucker prospects. #AllIn #WhyNot
