I’m guessing that the biggest obstacle to a Greinke trade to St. Louis would be some ridiculous demand like Greinke demanding that another year at $35M gets added to his contract in order to waive his no trade clause. I hope MO doesn’t let Greinke, or anybody else for that matter, bend him over a barrel.

How about giving the Braves Carlos Martinez, Dexter Fowler and Cabrera plus $10 million for Ian Anderson and Kyle Wright. Call up Fernandez and one of: Garcia, Thomas or Arozarena.

I would be happy to send Atlanta Fowler for a low level prospect. This would allow the Redbirds to would get out of the final two years of that awful contract. Only three or four more bad contracts to go …

I am expecting a somewhat slow, uneventful trading deadline this year.

Who the heck is Zac Rosscup? We just picked him up from the Dodgers?

Would you trade Elehuris Montero for either Ray or Minor?

    No I wouldn’t. They aren’t difference makers.

Ray is a quality LH pitcher that the Cardinals don’t have so yeas he is a difference maker. The question is Montero the right amount of trade option?

I would go for Ray with Montero…though i would be curious how much Montero buys e elsewhere if i put him out there…i feel like we would be selling low on him or at least other GMs would try to spin it that way

also i read that NYY was dangling Clint Frazier at ARZ for BRadley or Ray…I think Frazier trumps Montero in value for a team that has to compete unless they can move Greinke…

still I like a Ray and Peralta deal as a real difference maker additions that arent pure rentals…PEralta isnt Ozuna but he would make it easier to see Ozuna walk away after not taking the QO in the offseason

Maybe add in a JMart deal for a LHRP or maybe add in Fowler too that type of a deal? Maybe SF woudl be interested…they were said to have interest in JMart before but i think we were talking Smith…maybe if we target Watson they might be more interested…Fowler for cheap also might be worth something to them too

I awa Rotoworld blurb that said we were looking hard at Caleb Smith from the Marlins..

good guy to look at IMO…lots of control…well worth a prospect investment

maybe snag Conley on the cheap as well to help the LHRP’s?

Marlins have seen our kids at ST more than of any other team…i think we can assume a bit that they are as high on the guys we are high on within our system…instead of having to prove it to other GMs

    Caleb Smith
    Matt Boyd

those are the guys i like if we are going to invest by moving high rated prospects..i’d asdd Ray too, but with less control involved i’d want to target another upgrade (ie Peralta)

The one thing that does worry me with Smith is that he’s been very good at home compared to the road this year, and the Marlins’ park is certainly a pitching haven. Last year he was more even. That said, he’d be a good backup candidate.

That is your opinion. I view Ray as a number three starter type, which we have several already. I would rather upgrade to an ace but that is just me.

What aces are available on the trade market right now? The only guy definitely better than Ray who’s out there is Greinke, who comes with the massive contract and imminent decline that would be a back breaker the next couple years. You’ve got Thor with the injury issues, Boyd who I’m not convinced is that good, and Bauer if you actually believe he’ll be traded (I don’t).

The Cardinals are one of the few teams who could take on Greinke’s contract which would mean the return would be much less. And Greinke only has two more years on his deal which dovetails nice with Carp and Fowler. And what makes you think he is about to have a decline? I have seen no evidence of it. He is one of the ten best pitchers in the NL right now, maybe higher than that.

Velocity loss and age, the two things that bring down almost every pitcher who manages to stay injury free. If he manages to continue to be a pitcher worth the money he’s paid it would be a shock. The Cards have made these bets and lost huge every time.

The likelihood is that he will be about like Waino by 2021. Given his pay, that would set the team back significantly. The only way I would touch Greinke is if they take Fowler and a middle ground prospect, or basically hand him to us for a lotto ticket plus some salary relief.

Greinke’s velocity has certainly declined but he continues to produce at a VERY high level. He is a complete pitcher not just a thrower. Can we guarantee that he will continue at this level for the last two years of his contract? No, there is always risk involved but I still think he would be the biggest get for us right now. To me the length of his contract makes perfect sense with trying to win with this core of Yadi, Carp, Fowler, and Goldy.

I also realize the odds of us getting him are slim. I am just hoping that we shoot for higher than just mediocre upgrades. We are tied for first with the Chicago freaking Cubs. We have a real opportunity here, let’s push hard for it.

I would also add that Trevor Bauer would be a huge upgrade for us too. His little outburst the other day wasn’t cool but I doubt that will impact his value much. Even though the Indians are in the thick of the playoff race I wouldn’t be shocked if they moved him if the return was right.

Bauer would probably shake things up, but he would cost us either Carlson or Gorman for certain. Greinke would be cheaper in prospects but a big payroll outlay.

Why Ray then? He’s cheaper and better (not than those other two but compared to our current staff). Is he an ace? Nope…but I’ve already laid out why I think he’s going to be better away from Arizona and if he’s that kind of pitcher, he’s more a #2/3 type but still a big upgrade from Ponce or Wacha, and even Waino, who are strict #5 types or worse at this point. What’s that worth for 60 games and 12 starts? I’d guess maybe 2 wins (8-4/7-5 vs 6-6/5-7)…and in a tight division race, that could be the difference.

He also comes with a year of control and I’m still in favor of putting on the press for Gerrit Cole in the off-season if you are at all not confident that Cmart returns to the rotation at 100%. In that case you trade Cmart and Wong for prospects and salary relief and you’ve got probably 2/3 of the money recouped already toward signing a legit ace.

We have no LH starting pitchers…very important to fill that void.

Maybe, maybe not. I get what you are saying but we haven’t had a good LH starter in many years. Let’s just get a high quality starter, whether LH or RH.

You might be right Rat. It seems that this is an extreme seller’s market. I imagine the asking prices are exorbitant therefore the buyers are being hesitant to make the moves. We are about to find out who is aggressive and who isn’t.

ESPN with a couple of deals they would like to see.

I would love to get Diaz. I mentioned his name the other day. Wheeler? Meh, he is ok but a rental.

    https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/27286538/blockbuster-mlb-trade-deadline-deals-see

Cardinals acquire Zack Wheeler and Edwin Diaz from the Mets for Harrison Bader and a package of pitchers from the high minors.

It seems a safe bet that the New York Mets will move another starting pitcher and, now that Jason Vargas is now a Phillie, the identity of that pitcher will likely be Zack Wheeler – a free-agent to be – or Noah Syndergaard, whose name has bubbled up on the whisper wire for months. Syndergaard has two more years of team control left after this season, which drives up his asking price. The Mets are looking to contend in 2020 and possibly even this season. Thus you’d figure they be looking to add big-league-ready talent, the kind that contenders don’t typically part with at this time of the year. While some team could get creative in pursuit of Thor, that makes Wheeler the more likely candidate to be dealt.
The list of contenders who could use a mid-rotation starter like Wheeler is as long as list of contending teams. So the question is:

What do the Mets need back to address their goal of remaining competitive in the near future? Well, there is always a need for relief pitching, an area where there is a tremendous shortage at the moment and, likely, for the foreseeable future. The Mets have an elite closer in Edwin Diaz who has not been elite this season but has underlying metrics that suggest his underlying skills largely remain intact. Diaz is a possible trade candidate, given his team-friendly contract and the wide-spread need for relief help.

Voila! The Mets can package Wheeler and Diaz, set up the rotation and lineup for next year and focus on rebuilding the bullpen this winter.

If this train of thought aligns with the thinking of Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen, the best fit out there for a trade partner is St. Louis.

The Cardinals, in prime position to win the NL Central, could build a package around young center fielder Harrison Bader, who was recently demoted to Triple-A because of his struggles at the plate. However, Bader is a defensive stud with of upside with the bat who would give the Mets a long-term solution at one of the biggest positional holes in the organization. St. Louis could add a couple of arms from the high minors to bolster New York’s depth in that area, guys like Austin Gomber and Genesis Cabrera.

The Astros seem to be emerging as the favorite to land Wheeler but it’s hard to see how Houston can fulfill New York’s need for a starting center fielder. St. Louis can afford to part with Bader, especially given the rise of prospect Randy Arozarena, who has a 1.011 OPS at Memphis. (And, by the way, if the Mets won’t bite on Bader, perhaps they would on Arozarena.)
