They’d be rid of that huge burden of $35 million but both centerpieces have no trade clauses.
I think the Stroman deal is a shrewd move by the Mets. They have taken a very good starter off the market which could drive up the price for the starters they want to sell (Thor, Wheeler). They have reduced the supply but kept the demand the same.

We could only get so lucky. I think Carp now has negative trade value if that is possible. He is hitting around .200, 33 years old, owed $40M, and is 0 for 16 on his rehab.
Any chance the Cards just cut Carpenter lose? His value is zero now. As I said in another thread, its just about obvious he is washed up.
I doubt that will happen because management has a certain rapport with players especially their vets. i.e. Molina, Wainwright. They may see something that we don’t and feel that Carp has more value to this team than any other (if there is value left). They stuck with Fowler because of his contract, right? Most are scratching their heads about this particular situation.
Carp isn’t that old. For Pete’s sake, he got MVP votes just last season. I realize that everyone thinks Edman and Munoz are the future (hint: they are not, at least at 3B) but the “Carp is clearly washed up” narrative isn’t based in reality. It’s hard to say exactly what is going on with him but he’s a professional…my bet is that there’s some lingering injury and he’ll be back close to normal at some point.

By trading for Stroman #Mets removed the most obvious high-end starter who was going to be moved. In theory, with less inventory on market, prices for Wheeler/Syndergaard could go up. #TryingToMakeSenseOfItAllAndFailing

Some Mets information, per sources. The plan is to hold on to Marcus Stroman, not flip him. They are increasingly unlikely to sign Zack Wheeler to a contract extension. The likelihood is strong they deal at least one of Wheeler and Noah Syndergaard. They’ve hijacked the market.

If one team could find a way to mess up their trade position, it’s the Mets. Hopefully we start seeing some more trade action soon.
I don’t dispute the Mets being a poorly ran team but this particular move puts them in a stronger position. Now we will see if they take advantage of it.
JMO, but at face value, getting Stroman (1+ year before free agency), apparently to replace Syndergaard (2+ years before free agency), doesn’t seem all that brilliant. But as noted, this may only be the first step.
Per sources, #SFGiants drawing sudden interest in LH Drew Pomeranz, who since moving to ‘pen has struck out six in 4 1/3 shutout innings, allowing only one baserunner. Team’s LH relievers also include W. Smith, Watson, with Suarez, Selman at Triple A. At least one could be moved.

Getting Pomeranz might prove to be a shrewd move. His career against left handed batters is markedly better than when facing righties.
The Brewers-Pirates trade is interesting. It certainly refutes the myth that intra-division trades can’t happen.
Yes we know about the no-trade clause. I doubt that would be the biggest impediment to getting Greinke though.

Wheeler would be better than our current number 5 starter for sure. I would just hope we wouldn’t overpay for a rental. He doesn’t move the needle much though.
