I’ll take Leonardo Bernal at #5.
The switch-hitting 18-year-old catcher posted a 117 OPS+ at Palm Beach, and away from the unfriendly confines of Roger Dean Stadium he hit an amazing .333/.395/.696.
In a way he’s sort of the position player version of Tink Hence. Small sample size, and only in Low-A Ball, but nevertheless very, very promising. And he’s a year and a half younger than Tink.
#5 Burleson, though I think he likely ends up as trade fodder. He just doesn’t seem like the Cardinals type with his lack of defense. Somebody will get good value from him so hopefully the trade is a win-win if I am right.
I agree with slidinleft above, gets pretty tight after this I think. Herrera and Liberatore still have time to become what everyone thought (thinks?) they would even after a down year. I’ve just convinced myself (probably wishful thinking) that the club is going to put together a couple of their back end top-100ish guys to get an impact P/C/SS. A guy can dream.#5 – Ivan Herrera
Herrera made the jump from AA to AAA this year and put up a .770 OPS (.374 OBP!) while also getting a taste for the ML….all at age 22. That’s a 111 wRC+ for a 22-yr old catcher in AAA.
Sounds like Bernal is Just the right age and level tô replace Murphy when he becomes a FA in 3 years 🙂

I was pretty confident in the first 5 and they came in the right order. Now it gets trickier. Herrera had a really odd season where the Cardinals didn’t let him play much, then didn’t send him to the AFL, and now they are openly shopping for a catcher outside the organization. That tells me their faith in Herrera has gone down significantly. Liberatore has been all over the place the past 2 seasons mostly looking either great or terrible with not a ton of in between. But he’s young still and the fact that he can find great sometimes gives me hope. There’s also Baez with all his tools but so far a propensity for getting hurt. There’s Bernal, but he’s still very young and developing good catchers is so extremely difficult. And then there’s Hjerpe who didn’t pitch at all, but looks really exciting. You could throw Machado and Moises Gomez in this group too, but to me they’re the top of the next tier. I’ll just go by gut here:

#7 Cooper Hjerpe – LHPWas Herrera often injured? I am not aware of it. I assume Herrera’s lack of pt was due to being on the taxi squad. Isn’t it possible that time was spent with MLB staff? perhaps what people assume represents organizational disinterest was actually the opposite.
