Leonardo Bernal at #6
Ivan Herrera at #7Bernal was a distinctly above-average batter in Low-A at age 18 (he doesn’t turn 19 for several more months) so I expect him to finish the 2023 season in Double-A. As a teenager. That’s highly unusual for any prospect at any position, much less a switch-hitting backstop.
My favorite thing about Leonardo is the hot streak from July 15 – August 30. During that stretch of 6+ weeks he hit .397/.462/.776. And struck out less than 10% of the time. I realize it’s only a hot streak — but it’s the specific type of hot streak that can indicate a special kind of talent, a truly exceptional type of ability.
Herrera you already know about. His season felt vaguely disappointing. But as someone said earlier (Pads, I think) Ivan actually did hit pretty well in Triple-A in 2023, posting a 111 OPS+ with solid plate discipline markers. Far too soon to bail on him, just because the MLB manager didn’t like what he saw over a brief handful of games in the big leagues.
Thompson is a full 2 years older than Liberatore, has probably been removed as a starter to become a lefty reliever only, and had some mixed results in AAA last year – although was good in a small sample in StL. Not sure how that puts him above Liberatore? I get the Bernal pick completely and I still understand the argument for Herrera, but I think Thompson is a stretch here gang.
Herrera
McGreeveyJust not sold on Liberatore throwing too many pitches over the heart of the plate with average stuff. Thompson looks like a reliever of a Ken Dayley variety. Bernal and Hjerpe are a lot of projection. Bernal is at a premium position good D and a switch hitter that can hit…just far away…. Curious how Hjerpe’s stuff plays.
I think McGreevey is getting lost here. I know he got overshadowed a bit by Graceffo throwing a whole lot harder after being drafted, but he has starting rotation written all over him.
Herrera could use another year in AAA, but he is a premium prospect still. I think he will figure it out and be a fixture for years to come.This is a rough one…. Thompson is still eligible correct?
Herrera and Bernal are my picks, Bob Reed and I might have to go to Bernals first game!

I still understand the argument for Herrera, but I think Thompson is a stretch here gang.
Results matter. Thompson was effective in 2022 and Liberatore wasn’t. Liberatore may have more potential but the results speak for themselves.
Liberatore and McGravy. I have a lot optimism for both these guys. IMO Liberatore will breakout in ’23 and McGreevy will continue to improve at AAA. A call-up for him at the end of’23 is a possibility.

7. HererraBoth had a rough go in the majors this year but as 22 year olds at that level it’s not that surprising that they saw some struggles. I do like results too which is why I have Thompson after these guys.

7. Matthew Liberatore – LHPI think Ivan Herrera is still pretty solidly at 6. While he scuffled at the MLB level in limited at bats, he really didn’t get the chance to adjust. So that’s a throw away. 111 wRC+ in his first go at AAA isn’t bad. The power didn’t show up as much, but I still think that was a pretty successful year for his age.
Liberatore was a little tougher. I think he’ll eventually develop the consistency to be a #3 type starter, but I don’t think he’s the top of the rotation type guy I’d hoped for. Still a lot of value, but honestly he’s very similar to McGreevy for me and I put him ahead frankly because he’s a lefty. Overall, that’s still a very valuable prospect if it all comes together and he’s pretty close to a #3 already. So while it seems like a bit of let down, he’s going to have a lot of value down the road. Possibly even as a trade chip.Prospects drop and Liberatore has done just that, but I think he threw four shut outs, albeit three to five inning shut outs. His other outings were unsightly, but he has proven to be quite good against MLB batters when he pitches ahead.
That can be said for a lot of hurlers.McGreevy is a guy I can definitely see being moved this offseason simply due to his “pedigree” and decent results in his first full year. I have absolutely nothing against him, just seems like a good chip for Mo to play.

Juniel Querecuto. 30 yr old ss capable infield UT, bats both, 11 MLB PAs with TBR in 2016. 2022: 432 PAs in AAA hit .256, 11 HR, played quite a bit of ss.
Kenny Hernandez. 24 yr old LHP. Last two yrs bounced between A+ and AA, gets killed in AA. 2022: In AA 46.0 IP 1.848 WHIP
Logan Sawyer. 29 yr old RHP. Last affiliated ball 2016 A+. 2022: Indy ball 30 IP 0.467 WHIP 11.7 K/9
Since there hasn’t been much voting today, why don’t we close this out and move on. The #6 prospect is Ivan Herrera and the #7 prospect is Matt Liberatore.
