stlcard25ParticipantBtw, Kiley McDaniel projected Kershaw to get 3 years and $54M in his free agent projection today. At that price it would be tempting. You’d have to think that at some point, pitchers would see our park and defense as a draw. Scherzer at 3/$90M, Ray at 4/$76M, Rodriguez at 3/$51M, Stroman at 3/$48M, and Gray at 3/$39M are all guys we should at least kick the tires on for multi year starters.

ParticipantThe Cards aren’t in the market to hand out sizable multi year contracts. I know it’s hard for some to swallow, but it is what it is.

stlcard25ParticipantYes, the Cardinals with a clear hole in the roster and dozens of millions of dollars freed up from this past year, are going to sit back and ignore a wealth of potential upgrades right out. Notice that I said “at least kick the tires on.” They will add at least one starter, even if it’s not a multi year deal.
No matter what some think, the Cardinals will be sitting home in October if they’re going to depend on medicore at best pitchers like Woodford, Lester or Oviedo to carry the rotation.
November 8, 2021 at 1:39 pm #176379“Woodford, Lester, Oviedo to carry the rotation???”
I think they are planning on Flaherty, Hudson, Mikolas, and perhaps Wainwright to carry the rotation. Now if they get injured then there is nothing that can be done about that.
And some even want to trade Edman, or move him to shortstop.
As I’ve said many times on this Forum…….I am sure glad some of the posters here are NOT managing the Cardinals.

November 8, 2021 at 2:09 pm #176380If a trade came down to “player X” for either Edman or Gorman, I would trade Edman 100 times out of 100. I think Gorman will have much more value over his career than Edman.
As for starting pitching, we can have a rotation of Flaherty, Waino, Hudson, Mikolas and a pick-a-name-from-a-hat fifth starter….or a rotation of Flaherty, Waino, Hudson, Mikolas and Scherzer/Ray/Stroman/Gray. I know I would rather have the second choice in the event someone gets hurt.
November 8, 2021 at 2:14 pm #17638125 is correct. If Mo sits on his hands yet again we get the same or worse results next year. Way to much good talent on the market….we have to be players.
November 8, 2021 at 4:16 pm #176386Count me as surprised if we sign a free agent that turns down a QO, which means we lose a draft pick and international money. I just don’t see that happening.
November 8, 2021 at 4:21 pm #176387TJ McFarland got $2.5 million for 1 year plus 500k in incentives on #STLCards deal

November 8, 2021 at 4:56 pm #176390Now let’s resign Garcia. I also like signing Gray. The price should be right, plus he has room for improvement by leaving Coors field.
November 8, 2021 at 5:28 pm #176398If we could add a rh reliever like Garcia for under 4 million, maybe groom Thompson in the Cabrerra fashion, add Sung Bum Na for under 4 million for a power hitting LH outfielder, and finally find an Asian import pitcher… then we would have just enough dry powder to sign an interesting piece of very palletable low-hanging fruit.
I realize Thompson doesn’t always throw strikes. Neither did Genesis four years ago.The idea is he only faces three guys. He often lost it in the third or fourth innings. Thompson wasn’t wild every first inning he started.November 8, 2021 at 6:00 pm #176405

Scherzer, Stroman and Gray won’t cost anything but money, and Ray is the kind you can accept the draft pick for. The Cards have generally been trading away international money every year lately and we’ll see about the draft. I wouldn’t bet that they absolutely will sign a QO guy, but it doesn’t hurt to explore it.
November 8, 2021 at 6:32 pm #176408I guess the notion of some of the posters being GM could be problematic but just what great things has the Front Office done in the last 8 or 9 years? Can’t think of one. Could a poster do any worse than Mo and Junior? I’d say no. I hope Junior is prepared to raise the payroll significantly for 2022. He said a few years ago that in the next few years the payroll would be raised significantly. He used those exact words or very close. I’m waiting.
November 8, 2021 at 6:35 pm #176410“In the last 8-9 years?”
1) Goldschmidt
2) ArenadoMust be some others, can’t recall
November 8, 2021 at 8:35 pm #176421#STLCards are among 10 plus teams with interest in RHP Nick Martinez who had a big year with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks (1.60 ERA) and won a silver medal for Team USA in the Olympics. The Cards previously did well signing Miles Mikolas out of Japan.

ParticipantNo big names with long term expensive contracts. Just won’t happen. But the tweaking will be fun to watch.

stlcard25ParticipantNo big names with long term expensive contracts. Just won’t happen. But the tweaking will be fun to watch.
At least until the season starts and all those arms fail again.
I will say that if the Cards were willing to pay Waino like they did, I would bet that they’d be willing to pay Stroman or Gray for a few years. The pitching pipeline is pretty barren right now and it just makes too much sense to find a #2/3 on the market. Either that or they look to trade with a team like Oakland for one of their later arbitration guys. Personally, I’d like to do both. I don’t think we get through 2022 with an intact rotation and if it’s Flaherty or Waino going down, we are in major trouble.
November 9, 2021 at 10:46 am #176447Plummer was not added to the 40 man and is a minor league free agent. I find it surprising they let him walk.
I see now this was discussed in the rule 5 thread too.
November 9, 2021 at 12:20 pm #176454I saw someplace Arenado has declined the opt out.

Pork TwainParticipantFlaherty, Hudson, Mikolas, and Wainwright is a pretty good 1-4, with Reyes getting a look and Hicks coming back in the Arm Barn. I can see us signing a solid upgrade at SS and a veteran SP that can eat some innings and possibly a couple of solid arms for the Arm Barn (ahahahaha the best thing PETA has ever worked to change).

November 9, 2021 at 4:36 pm #176477FWIW, some of the guys in the VEB list were not trades.
November 9, 2021 at 5:05 pm #176482They have acquired some talent to be sure and some of it is very good. But two things: 1. They don’t acquire enough in any one year. They make one deal then quit and that person is supposed to lead us out of the wilderness. They never do. 2. They have acquired an equal number of lousy players. That being said the only test of success for me is very simple. How many World Series trophies in the last nine years? All the hoopla about acquisitions and the five gold gloves is worthless without a World Series win.
November 9, 2021 at 6:46 pm #176487How many World Series trophies in the last nine years?
Nice how you cut that off at 9, Nate. One WS trophy every 10 years is not bad at all. So far in my lifetime, I’ve had 4(’67,’82,’06 & ’11) Cardinal titles. I have no recollection of the ’67 as a good rattle or stuffed bear occupied the lion’s share of my time. I’d love to add 4 more. Many of our posters here have just 2 Cardinal WS titles under their belt. I wonder if we have any posters here with more than 5?
