Bringing in Urias probably means that our new RH OF bat is going to be Fermin or Saggese. The Cardinals are now probably done signing new players.

We don’t need a Adolis Garcia mistake while we are auditioning a 10man bench as possible regulars. Back then we had an outfield and Adolis slipped thru the cracks.

Now we need to play em’ all, and let Baez, Torres, Fermin, Walker etc. show their worth. A good player slipping thru the cracks now wouldn’t be due diligence. Besides, you have to know who to churn out.

The Cardinals official site lists Urias as backup for 2B, 3B, LF.

It lists starters in the following order:

    Liberatore
    May
    McGreevy
    Pallante
    Leahy
    Fitts
    Dobbins

BW, shouldn’t DSL Andey Garrido be listed as a pitcher, or did he change to OF?

No real surprises here given the health status of Roby, Thompson, and Henderson. I thought Love and Hansen may both survive until the next round of cuts, but neither had any shot of making the team so it’s fine.

It’s the interesting time of the year to speculate who will be added to the 40 man roster. Seems like Velasquez could be added. Or he could accept a Memphis assignment, but that might crowd their outfield. I think Davis will start at Springtime either way. Fermin, Pushard and Bruhi have a leg up to make since they can’t be sent down. Roycroft has an option left. At this moment, the starting 5 appear to be Liberatore, May, Fitts, McGreevy, and Pallante. Dobbins may be back, but will need at least the month of April to ramp up in Memphis. Mathew’s could be added before Dobbins if he can master AAA. I’m assuming Henderson would remain behind in Florida while he recovers. Mautz has been pretty good in camp. But he needs better control. Weatherholt needs a spot opened up on the 40 man roster. Saggesse hasn’t played much lately, is he injured? And will Torres make the 26? Many questions.

Saggese and Torres are away at the WBC. For when he returns, Torres was reassigned to minors camp on Saturday.

I guess this is the same as how they just handled Crooks. The basic message is if you don’t have more than a snippet of MLB service time, and you’re already on the 40-man, then you need to prove yourself at AAA first. Wetherholt already proved himself last season (plus he’s not on the 40-man). There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s a bit odd that guys like Chase Davis and Brody Moore get to outlast better players though.

Here is the logic. The longer Baez stays, hitting two-run homers (as he did today) and batting .333, the louder the cries will be to promote him prematurely.

Everyone already knows Davis and Moore have no chance of making the team.

That is why the timing is what it is, at least as I see it.

They have guys to send on the bus rides, spending the whole day to maybe play two innings or not at all, and guys they want doing something else.

Brian – I agree. That’s what I see it as too. I’m not sure I entirely agree with the concept though. But in today’s age of fans going crazy on the internet every time a prospect hits a homer (even if it’s off a no-name pitcher who threw a fastball over the heart of the plate), I understand.

At least its just the fans now, J, not the front office. (hopefully)

Well im def glad they didnt get over wowed by baez and keep him on the team. If he continues what hes doing in AAA ball for a good bit, then thoughts can be entertained. I like what little ive seen but time will tell.

Sad news for those of us who were Alec Willis fans:(from transaction pages)

03/10/26 – FCL Cardinals released RHP Alec Willis.

Willis had the Steven Gingery effect. Just never could get healthy enough to pitch, despite lots of promise.

Willis was an expensive draft pick. Seems like that is the likely fate of most mid round picks signing for way above slot value. I believe Willis signed for a million over slot value. That strategy hasn’t seemed to work for the Cards anyway. Too bad about Willis. I always had hoped he’d make it.
