I’m not sure if Brian has the info, but the Cardinals have less homegrown talent on the 40-man roster in a long time. Any idea when was the last time the Cardinals had so few homegrown guys on the 40-man roster?
Homegrown: 13
Free Agent: 9
Trade: 14
Waivers: 3
Rule 5 Draft: 1December 9, 2023 at 11:00 am #239398Good question. I haven’t tracked the history that way, but I wish I had. I tend to want to agree with your thought.
Amazing to me that trade acquisitions represent the highest share.
December 16, 2023 at 9:16 pm #23992512/15 Cardinals sign Mexican RHP Alan Reyes
December 16, 2023 at 10:13 pm #239927This Reyes is pretty obscure. I found a couple Spanish language local sports news game reports where an Alan Reyes, RHRP, appeared in relief for the Oaxaca Warriors. Got lit up both times. How much you want to bet he gets a lot of swing and miss.

jj-cf-stlParticipantLance Lynn is a farmhand of only one org, but his most recent transaction is as a FA. How does your numbers classify him BHC?
December 17, 2023 at 6:51 am #239932Lance Lynn is a farmhand of only one org
I just want to clarify that just being a farmhand doesn’t count as homegrown. Mo just acquired some guys who are now on the 40 man and are in the Cardinals farm system. They aren’t ever going to be home grown. Lance came all the way up from draft day to debut, so that is a different consideration. I personally would not consider him a homegrown anymore, but happy to have him back. Once a Cardinal, always . . .
December 17, 2023 at 6:56 am #239933Or should it matter what level they came in at? Is making one’s pro debut in the Cardinals org a requirement for homegrown status? Was Wainwright ‘homegrown’? What about Liberatore? He was A level when we got him, but instantly beamed up to AAA.
December 17, 2023 at 7:03 am #239934
jj-cf-stlParticipantI prefer homegrown as, no time with another org.
December 17, 2023 at 7:26 am #239935I would list Lynn as a FA because that is how he was acquired.
December 17, 2023 at 8:00 am #239937
jj-cf-stlParticipantAgree BW, but some of our prospects are also international FA signings, so “FA” on its own, also needs clarity.
“Known no other org” helps clarify the FA’s correctly, and the acquired by trade prospects, who have known another org., that BB mentioned.
December 17, 2023 at 9:35 am #239939I have Lynn as a Free Agent
Homegrown is the player was drafted or signed as an amateur and spent no time with another organization.

Participant12/15: FA RHP Alan Reyes signed to minors contract, assigned to Peo. New organization total: 224 players.

December 21, 2023 at 2:27 pm #240135For the second time in a week, the #STLCards have dipped into a non-traditional source for minor league reinforcement. The organization reportedly signed 27-year-old Canadian infielder-outfielder Matt Lloyd, who played in independent ball in 2023. ($) https://t.co/Viu7MzRvZ0 pic.twitter.com/Sg9oFkkr5f

December 30, 2023 at 9:24 pm #240545I am very curious to see how the Cardinals set their MiLB teams for 2024. There’s not a whole lot of guys from FCL or DSL that deserve promotion as both teams were putrid.

cardsfan64ParticipantFilling out some minor league slots!
We have signed C Gavin Collins, RHP Joe Corbett & OF Matt Lloyd to minor league contracts for the 2024 season.
All three were named 2023 American Association All-Stars in their first year playing in the independent league.

January 3, 2024 at 6:32 pm #240712I was just taking a look at the roster matrix. Between St. Louis and Memphis there are 35 pitchers, and 16 more in the Springfield section.
January 3, 2024 at 8:46 pm #240720If Nick Robertson and Ryan Fernandez both make the cut out of spring training, then either Thompson or Liberatore get sent back to Memphis. I’m going to guess that Thompson goes to Memphis so he’s ready when they need another starter and Liberatore stays in the bullpen.
Rom, King, Naile, and Zuniga are sent to Memphis where there’s no roster space, or they get cut or traded.
Some of the pitchers at Memphis are going to have to be released.
Starters – Mikolas, Gray, Lynn, Gibson, Matz.
RH relief – Helsley, Gallegos, Pallante, Robertson(?),
Fernandez(?)
LH relief – Romero, Liberatore (and maybe King, but then,
one of Robertson or Fernandez has to go.For the position players, the only opening looks like it’s going to be right-handed DH. Baker would seem to be the prime candidate for that with Carlson or Burleson being
left-handed DH. After a few weeks Oli will probably go with 13 pitchers and somebody will have to be sent down, likely Baker or, possibly, Winn.C – Contreras, Herrera
1B – Goldschmidt
2B – Gorman, Edman
SS – Winn
3B – Arenado
LF – Burleson
CF – Nootbaar, Carlson
RF – Walker, Palacios
UT – Donovan
DH – BakerIt’s going to be really tough for a surprise this spring. Scott, Prieto, or Saggase?
Graceffo, Granillo, Rom, or Robberse?
All you can say is ‘anything’s possible’, until it isn’t.January 3, 2024 at 9:07 pm #240722mud, Edman seems to have been announced as the CF already, and if that holds up I think the active roster will have one more infielder and one less outfielder than you have there. I hope so at least, to cut down on the positional shuffling consequent to moving Edman around if circumstances arise. I also think they learned their lesson about having defensively limited guys on the bench, so we won’t see both Baker and Burleson.
January 3, 2024 at 11:02 pm #240723I think Baker is a right-handed DH with power who can also give Goldschmidt a day off once in awhile. The seem to like Burleson. I can’t see him not making the cut. I’m thinking that Winn might have to go back to Memphis for some more AB’s. That puts Edman at SS and Carlson in CF, I think. Or, Nootbaar could play CF with Burleson in LF again. Then, Carlson is the left-handed DH. They could send Palacios down and keep Fermin instead, but there’s not much excitement with that move. Donovan can play outfield or 2B. It’s all fluid for now. I just hope that by June Oli is set on a lineup, but that might not be his style of managing. It’s hard to see how Arenado ever gets a day off. If Winn doesn’t make the cut, I do see where we need a defense minded infielder, probably Fermin. I think my point is that roster is pretty much set. It’s going to take an overwhelming breakout in spring training for a player to crack this roster.
January 4, 2024 at 4:41 am #240724I can see where there might not be a good alternative to both Burly and Baker on the roster as it is looking right now. But there are a couple realities that cannot be brushed aside. One is that Carlson is essentially unplayable as a left handed batter and the other is that Burleson cannot be a regular in the outfield, most especially with Walker also in the outfield. Good lord, that is a terrifying thought.
I wish there were better options, but the imagined outfield glut of recent times evaporated, and it is now astonishingly thin. When you think about it, Noot is the only true outfielder who is everyday playable. That was one of the many problems last year, and seems like it will be again. We can only hope Noot doesn’t hit the IL again. We can also hope Scott holds up in AAA. We can hope Winn shakes off the jitters. We can hope Walker improves in the field. And as long as we are hoping, hope that Palacios continues to be more than anyone thought. Maybe supplement the hoping with praying.

These two statements appear to be in conflict. Right now, Winn is the declared shortstop. Do you think a rough spring will cost him the job and cause the defense to be shuffled again?
What we might prefer has to be tempered by what we think will realistically happen.
Unless Winn is absolutely terrible in Jupiter (against spring training pitching), I can’t see them being that impatient after having given him the clear stamp of approval. So then, any changes would be occurring during the season, which increases the risk of resulting problems from another year of rotating defenders.
The bottom line question is, “How long do they give Winn if he struggles with the bat before doing something about it?”
January 4, 2024 at 7:26 am #240729My gut feeling is Winn will do well enough offensively to stick, which will keep Edman in CF. The bench should be constructed around that scenario. The pieces in house are not ideal for that.
