And it seems the all-star train is pulling out of the station leaving the entire Cardinal team forlornly standing on the platform.

I think Winn and Gray are a shoo-in to make the All-Star squad, Cardinal in France, with Helsley having a decent shot of climbing aboard too. It’s the cubbies whom will most likely be lacking representation. Imanaga had it in the bag until his recent difficulties. His next start will tell us much about his chances. If he gets belted around again, I don’t like his odds of being selected.

I don’t like Pages and Siani in the same starting lineup, but I like both players. Pages starts against lefties with Carlson in cf. Contreras DH on days Pages plays. Carlson in cf. Trying to figure out the rest of the lineup if Noot, Edman, and Walker return makes my head hurt.

    Right now,
    Vs. RHP
    1. Donovan – LF (L)
    2. Winn – SS (R)
    3. Burleson – RF (L)
    4. Arenado – 3B (R)
    5. Contreras – C (R)
    6. Gorman – 2B (L)
    7. Goldschmidt – 1B (R)
    8. Carpenter – DH (L)
    9. Carlson/Siani – CF (S/L)

    Vs. LHP
    1. Donovan – LF (L)
    2. Winn – SS (R)
    3. Goldschmidt – 1B (R)
    4. Arenado – 3B (R)
    5. Contreras – C (R)
    6. Gorman – DH (L)
    7. Carlson – RF (S)
    8. Fermin – 2B (R)
    9. Siani – CF (L)
If they had the ability to get Gorman and Siani out vs LHP it would be best, but they don’t right now. Herrera comes back he could catch and let Contreras DH vs LHP. Nootbaar has struggled against LHP this season, but his career numbers would be better option than those 2, but one would think Fermin is the first back to Memphis when Nootbaar does return, so Gorman probably stays in the line up vs LHP.

Cards667, right now, I’d be surprised if Burleson isn’t in the lineup vs a LHP. I guess we’ll find out tomorrow evening.

If he’s 6th in place of Gorman or 8th, pushing Fermin to 9th, in place of Siani, Carlson in CF then fine. But you can’t deny his splits vs LHP are not good. Burleson, Gorman, and Siani don’t need to play vs. LHP. But your options to replace them are Carpenter or Crawford and thats worse options. And against Sale, tomorrow night as you mentioned, I wouldn’t want Burleson or Gorman in the line-up.

I’ll be surprised if Ollie doesn’t stay with Winn/Burly at 1/2 tomorrow evening against Sale. Especially , if they are productive again tonite and the Cardinals win.

Pads: Goldy squeezed out of your lineup altogether?

There’s no way Sonny Gray and Ryan Helsley will be left off the all-star team. Gray is 2nd in wins, 4 in ERA, 7th in Ks. And Helsley is the NL saves leader by 5 over 2nd place.

Winn, Donovan and Burleson are currently the Cardinals top three hitters. They should be batting 1,2 and 3 in the batting order. Then Goldy. Then either Arenado or Contreras at 5 and 6. Right now, 7 is fine for Gorman. Nootbaar might be a factor in the lineup makeup fairly soon. I’d still go Winn, Donovan and Burly 1,2 and 3, for now. At least against a RHP starter.

Winn seems to strike out a lot versus RHP. Is that a concern for him being at the leadoff spot? Of course, other than Donovan and Burleson, most of the others seem to strike out a lot. So there might not be many other options at leadoff.

Tell me why this lineup doesn’t make sense, right now.
    1) Winn SS
    2) Donovan LF
    3) Burleson RF
    4) Goldschmidt 1B
    5) Contreras DH
    6) Arenado 3B
    7) Gorman 2B
    8) Pages C
    9) Siani or Carlson CF

Because Contreras rightfully should be the starting catcher. Pages is good with the glove, but Contreras is average defensively and has a really good arm. The offense sees a significant upgrade with Contreras at catcher. We can probably improve our overall defense anyway by Burly moving to DH and Carlson/Noot very soon taking RF.

The lineup is constantly in flux with injuries, players coming back, and over/under performances so I realistically don’t see too much of a point in planning our given lineups anyway.

Noot homered for Springfield last night and will be returning to STL before long. That is going to be a biggie as far as lineup flux goes. Play time, defensive positioning and batting order all up in the air for multiple guys.

Note that Nootbaar has played in right field in both rehab games with Springfield. This isn’t what some people want to see happen, but the signals seem clear that Burly will be moving to DH very soon.

    ^^^^^^

That’s a no-brainer as every defensive metric rates Noot an above average Right Fielder.

An OF of Hurdy Gurdy, Siani, and Noot is one heckuva good defensive OF!

The Cardinals do not use an everyday DH.

For one thing, I do not see them having Contreras behind the plate more or DHing less. I do not see Goldy and NA and their contracts sitting on the bench on their days off from fielding duty. I do not see any big change in the way the DH slot has been used. As I said above, play time distrubution is up in the air.

I’m not sure who Hurdy Gurdy is, but LF will be Donovan’s in my view. He has improved defensively a lot this year in the OF. And yes an OF of Donovan, Siani, Nootbaar is a very good defensive OF. Our pitchers should feel comfortable throwing it up in the zone trying to get fly balls with that OF.

Siani has been absolutely amazing. I was looking at stat cast, and everything that is estimated at a 15% or higher possiblity of catching, Siani has caught it in 132 chances. His success rate added is 9% with the next closest in baseball being 6%.

Sure. Good defensive outfield. I like it. How do you like our 27/30 in runs scored offense?

Our cOF spots are both above average with Noot and Donny. It isn’t like we have a better offensive option as Burly is still starting at DH. We essentially upgrade from Carp to Noot offensively and Burly to Noot defensively when Noot is back.

I’m honestly not sure if this team is able to contend or not. It won’t be for the OF, but 3/4ths of our IF vastly underperforming offensively. In order for this team to truly compete, it requires Goldy, Arenado, and Gorman to start hitting. They were supposed to be the meat of this lineup with Contreras.

I agree that Noot rehabbing in RF means he will probably go into RF when he returns. That does not 100% mean that Burleson is out as an an everyday outfielder. He could slide over to LF and Donovan could return to his UT role, maybe spelling our trio of underperforming infielders more. Just a thought.

Certainly possible at times, bling. But if they wanted to give Goldy a day off from playing in the field, it seems like Burly would be the guy most likely to play at first base. Donovan could spell Gorman or Arenado defensively, though. They could also put Noot in CF now and then to get more of a hitter in the lineup over Siani. Any of these could put Burly in the field.

But when all is said and done, I still guess the more regular configuration would be with Burly as DH. Those at-bats are more available with Herrera out. But we shall see what transpires.

I would be reluctant to pull The Hurdy Gurdy Man out of LF at this point. He’s playing D at a GG caliber level and crushing baseballs.

As someone astutely pointed out, moving Noot to Right and Burleson to DH essentially improves the defense in RF while improving the offense at DH (Burleson over Marp).

It seems obvious to me that an OF of Donnie, Siani, and Noot, with Burly at DH will be the way to go. It makes too much sense. That is a good defensive OF although this team has too many LH hitters.

I will give you a contoversial take though. I think Noot is over rated. He is a fine defender but is offense is very spotty and his injury history is starting reach O’Neill and Matz levels. He is been on IL FIVE times in the last year and a half: thumb, back, groin, rib, and oblique. The best thing he has going for him now is that he is cheap but he will enter arbitration this offseason.

As of today I view Siani as the better player. Yes I know all about their WAR and OPS+ but I stand by my statememnt.
