WRT Edman:
“He just has to be able to do his work leading into a game without pain,” he said. “He’s been able to do the progressions this time through with that being the case. He’s doing BP from both sides and he’s feeling pretty good. I believe next would be [pitching] machine work and getting him in some [batting practice] lives and then maybe games.”
June 11, 2024 at 12:10 pm #255844You guys can brag about Goldys walk fueled on base streak all you want. It doesn’t hide his 350 slg 656 ops 25 rbi. He belongs in the lower third of the order until his production numbers improve.
June 11, 2024 at 12:25 pm #255845
jj-cf-stlParticipant3 hitless games during his streak is “walk fueled”?
June 11, 2024 at 12:57 pm #255848It’s real nice that Goldschmidt has maintained that 26 game on base streak, but the Cardinals don’t pay him to reach base. His job is push guys across HP that reach base in front of him and he’s only done his job 25 times this season. When two guys named Donovan and Winn have collected 27 and 23 RBI’s respectively, it’s obvious to me that the guy who’s job it is to drive in runs has yet to fulfill his role.
June 11, 2024 at 2:25 pm #255854Again, if you look at the ENTIRE SEASON to date, Goldy has been bad. But the LAST MONTH, he has been good – better than Burly. Goldy has had long slumps before, but unfortunately for him, this year it was early. Returning to MVP form seems unlikely, but it is not unrealistic to think he will continue to improve.
Trying not to be arbitrary, I chose May 11 through June 10 because that is exactly one month and 100 at-bats seemed a decent sample. If folks want to show other dates, go for it.
June 11, 2024 at 2:32 pm #255855I agree, BW, but Paul Goldschmidt is supposed to be better than 3 Alecs. I’m also going to guess that when the 2024 season is placed in the books the back of Goldschmidt’s card will read something similar to .270/27/85. Same with Arenado.
June 11, 2024 at 2:34 pm #255856We shall see about the end of the season then, but for now, there is progress.
June 11, 2024 at 2:43 pm #255857As for Edman I have been reading his injury “updates” for the last 6 months. Until he actually steps onto the field I am going to be a bit skeptical about his prognosis.
June 11, 2024 at 2:56 pm #255858Yeah, now they’re talking about a possible early July rehab assignment. From what I’ve been led to understand, he’s not even been subjected to live BP yet. Some orthopedic guy probably botched the surgery. He should refund Tommy his copay…
June 11, 2024 at 5:55 pm #255869Another wrinkle, what’s the lineup when Nootbaar, Edman AND Walker come back?
June 11, 2024 at 6:20 pm #255871
jj-cf-stlParticipantBRef has a RBI and opprtunities total at the top of every players game log page. I bet you’d like it Dom.
June 11, 2024 at 6:30 pm #255872One thing I think we all can agree on-we aren’t going anywhere without Goldy and Arenado.
June 11, 2024 at 6:31 pm #255873He’s a 7 X AS and a former MVP and it looks to me like he’s 5 RBI’s shy of the average player.
June 11, 2024 at 6:34 pm #255874Yeah, KCB, that’s the crux of the entire biscuit. If even one of them could amp it up to something similar to their career standard for a couple of weeks, we’d probably be 3 or 4 games above .500.
June 11, 2024 at 6:37 pm #255876
jj-cf-stlParticipantIt’s a good enough look at it right?
Baseball Musings also has RBI% for a “driving in baserunners” look at it.June 11, 2024 at 6:49 pm #255879Two considerations for when, Contreras, Nootbaar, Edman and Walker all return. If they bring Walker back up, he’ll start. Second, Oli really likes Burleson’s bat in the lineup. So, who will not be in the lineup?
June 11, 2024 at 7:11 pm #255883Siani. Carlson. Pages. Herrera.
June 11, 2024 at 7:13 pm #255884^^^^^^
1. Walker possibly spends entire season in Memphis.
2. Wouldn’t count on Edman in 2024.
3. Contreras is the starting catcher.
4. Noot is out best all-around outfielder. He starts.June 11, 2024 at 8:26 pm #255909AdM, you’ve been bashing Burleson for a long time. Where does he fit in? If you have been paying close attention, please tell us about Burleson’s last two ABs against possibly the most dominant pitcher going right now.
June 11, 2024 at 8:51 pm #255917Itching for this to devolve into another enshrinement? Yawn.
June 11, 2024 at 9:42 pm #255926Mr Shady, I bashed Burleson when he was not performing. He’s hitting now, good for him.
But, he only has a future as a DH. He’s absolutely horrible in the OF and doesn’t hit for enough power to play first on a winning team.
Now, here’s the difference between you and me. I won’t judge a player on two ABs. You do. I look at his career, I look at his season, and I note if he’s trending up or down. I’m sorry, but two ABs in a vacuum is meaningless.
Where does Burleson fit? Well, I sure wouldn’t hit him second. He’s too slow and his OBP is mediocre at best. He hits a tons of singles, so I’d drop him to seventh in the order and keep him from playing any defense.
Keep in mind with Burleson, he looks great lately in a Card’s uniform. But he’s a mediocre guy on a good team. He has 200 ABs this season And only 16 XBH. Not great. Looks good as a Cardinal, but not great. And I like ballplayers. Guys who can run a bit or play defense.
So go ahead Mr Shady and toot your horn over the incredible mediocre season Burleson is having. Enjoy! You’ve earned it after years of telling everyone what a Superstar Burleson is.
June 11, 2024 at 10:07 pm #255927AdM, you are in bigtime, lawyer-speak denial. How’d you like Burleson’s 3rd hit of the game? lol
June 11, 2024 at 10:31 pm #255929^^^^^
As usual you’re being vague.
What am I in denial about?
Is your Beloved Burleson going to lead the league in hitting? Homers? RBI?
Will he receive MVP votes? Will he make the All Star team?I’ll give you this, he no longer is one of the worst players in MLB like he was in 2022 & 2023. But, he’s nowhere one of the best either.
But I’ve noticed you’re all about mediocrity.
So yes, Burleson has a spot on the Cardinals. They are in last place. A crappy team. But at least Burleson is no longer the crappiest on this crappy team.
June 12, 2024 at 6:03 am #255932I think we should bat Siani third.
June 12, 2024 at 9:03 am #255946^^^^^
I know many may disagree, but I’ve seen enough of Sinai. I’d rather give DC one last shot at being an everyday player in CF. He can’t possibly be a worse hitter than Siani.
